Thursday MU men's hoops practice

Nothing dramatic for a change from what I saw in the last hour.

Everyone was there and practiced except Yaniv Simpson (sprained left ankle). According to trainer Adam Smith he could be "available," give or
take a week, around the time of the FDU games, Feb. 5 and or the 12th.

I spoke with Yaniv about red-shirting. It's not for him. He said he just turned 22 and
plans to complete his collegiate education and college basketball career over four
years.

To further frustrate MU fans, Rickie Crews had some nice plays in practice. He's
soooooo long and athletic. On one play he took what appeared to be an off balance
baseline jumper and swished it through.

On another, Mike Shipman snared an offensive rebound and fed Rickie coming down the
lane for a two-hand slam.

Nothing new on Shipman's academic status. Current or former
college students please correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understand a professor
may change a grade at any time. Even next year for a grade from this year.

Dave stopped practice at one time for an old fashioned team tongue lashing and let Corey Hallett have it in particular.

It should be noted coaches yelling at their teams or players in practice, at any level, isn't unusual.

Corey actually had some positive moments in practice today.

How are Delic and Dave getting along today? Dave and he went at it during half time of the SH game.No love lost between them these days. The team sprit looks like its broken right now ,who's leading the team ?Marques is not the same player,Corey is far behind where he can be and Delic needs to play smarter all the time. Its not to late 13 games to go and then 3 winner takes all games, maybe the team should watch the NCAA news clips from last season and remember how great it was for them and their FANS.

Rickie will not make the trip to CCSU as the result of his missing the practice at Quinnipiac last week....MU fans can always hope for Monday at SFNY.

Tony,

I noticed on the MU website today that the men's basketball team is looking for an assistant coach. Any news about this? Is someone leaving or are they just adding another headcount?
I'm usually pretty up on this stuff and don't think I missed anything.

Were you in the locker room? My take is this is not a happy group of campers at the moment.

As for a leader..I really don't see one. Marques could (should?) be it..but he's more of a leader on the floor type.

There seems to be a perception that Marques is not the "same" player he was last year, though his numbers are about the same (11.1 ppg., 3.6 rpg. this year) though a little down in both areas, especially rebounds (11.6 ppg., 5.3 rpg. last year).

I think what is most frustarting for MU fans is that many still believe in this team...

But...it is not deep (for sure) , and just maybe isn't really more than around a .500 NEC team.

I don't see it on the web site...but I will check tomorrow. I didn't see Calz at practice today...I just figured he was recruiting.

It could be it's the opening that Kenny is about to fill. He joins the staff "officially" later this month. Technically the job is open until that happens. That could be it.

Tony, I don't know how you feel about the whole Rickie Crews dilemma but I feel like by now he is a lost cause. He has missed too many practices and messed up too many times for him to be a viable option anymore. How do you feel?

Tony, you are correct. It is Chris Kenny's position. The job must be officially posted for legal reasons.

Ah...a day without a Rickie question would be like a day without sun. Or clouds. Whatever you prefer.

But, seriously, I think, believe it or not, he is still in the mix to play this year.

Now, can he get through today's practice and this weekend without any more problems? And make it to practice on time Sunday. I know this sounds silly but Rickie really is "day-to-day."

I am beginning to think playing would help him in that he'd have something to motivate.

If I am at my wits end...you have to wonder how Dave feels?!?

I'm telling you..if this kid ever begins to play ..sure he'll make mistakes..but he will help..in my opinion...

Your wish is my command....

Well, in this instance anyway:

Northeast Conference
2006-07 Men’s Basketball
Preseason Coaches Poll

1. Monmouth (6)
2. Robert Morris (5)
3. Long Island
4. Central Connecticut St.
Quinnipiac
6. Wagner
7. Fairleigh Dickinson
8. St. Francis (NY)
9. Sacred Heart
10. Mount St. Mary’s
11. Saint Francis (PA)

Just goes to show you that preseason polls may not mean a whole lot...and this is the coaches poll!

In my Lindy's Poll..I had RMU 1 and MU 2. I had Sacred Heart buried as I recall.
