MU men's hoops update

News of note...Just talked to Dave.

Mike Shipman remains academically ineligible.

Rickie Crews will not travel to the CCSU game Saturday, the result of his missing the bus to practice at Quinnipiac last Friday. He is practicing (as of yesterday, Monday) with the team and is still a member of same (as we speak).

Hey, what would a day be if we didn't at least have a little Rickie news...right?

MU will practice today, be off tomorrow, and then practice at 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday before leaving for CCSU Friday evening.

If Rickie is a good boy this week, when will we see him in a game? Or is he done for the season?

Dave didn't mention Simpson....I didn't even ask (my bad!) figuring we'll have a better idea later this week.. I am not at practice today..but do plan to attend Thursday and or Friday....if I find anything out at all (Simpson) I will pass it on....

Re: Rickie - If, nothing else happens (!@#), my guess is he will, maybe, possibly, get another chance to play...But that could be me being too optimistic.

I think it's 40-60 that we ever seem him play again , at least this year for MU..but I suppose that's better than 10-90!

...For every one step forward he takes.. he takes another backwards. It's a shame.

If the NEC Tournament started today MU would be #8.

Tony, I think Ricky can put some much needed fire in the Hawk's line-up. We really need someone with some hand's in the middle.Because the Jet can create off the dribble. But it look's bad if your other players can't handle the pass.I still believe that this team has to push the tempo a little. We must realize the player's of 2007 are not the player's of Coach Calloway's erea. There's very few complete player's on any level these day's.Time's have changed.

Frankly...MU fans shouldn't be counting on Rickie..it's not that I "know" anything..it's his track record.

If he provides a boost somehwere along the way.. fine...but it's nothing for anyone to be counting on, in my opinion.

As for up tempo...sure.. if they have a bona fide fast break opportunity.

But, otherwise, in my opinion,
they've got to keep the pace slow to moderate as they did in the four-game winning streak to be successful.

Really.. they have only six guys..well seven if you include Corey, who for the most part, has not been contributing nearly what I expected this year.

Don't count on Crews -- seems obvious Calloway wants him out the door at this point.

Simpson update...just talked to Dave. Ankle isn't broken but it is sprained and, according to Calloway, he'll be out "a couple of weeks.''

So really.. they're in the same boat as last week's game at Q Pac..eight scholarship players available (including Barlow)...and seven who will play the bulk of the minutes with Bunch and Nunner off the bench.

This is not good Tony, not at all. I think had Crews had gotten his act together after his week suspension, he would have made a huge impact and been a big help to MU's thinned out roster. When we play only a 7-8 man team, the results can't be good because we tire too quickly. Plus, not all 7-8 are 100% either.

Tony any idea what Rickie has to do this week to play in a game on Saturday or Monday? The next question is why does he stay at MU?

If Simpson is hurt the rest of the season can he red shirt or is it to late?

The team is very thin..no question. It may be time to use Barlow for a few minutes here and there...maybe Bazaz.

Re: Rickie. First Answer - just go to practice, got to class, be on time, go in the game if the coach asks him.

Second Answer: per Whitney Coleman in a story I wrote last week - he likes it here.

Tony does Dave want Rickie or is he just building a case to get him out? What does Chris or Ron say about Rickie? It sounds like the players have mixed feelings any feed back from them to report.

Re: Yaniv. Not sure, maybe he can. But.....would he want to? He's 21 years old now. He said he didn't want to go a prep school or the like this year because he wanted to play the next four years in college. I'll check on both issues Thursday.

I just read on another post that John Holland 6-5 forward is thinking about MU, does anyone have a report card on him ? NJHoops.com has nothing and there is very little on the Web. One report is that Rider and FDU are looking at him but nothing on his Stats so far this season that I can find.Any info to share...

Perhaps never in blogdom has so much been written about one who has played so few (11) minutes.

Whitney Coleman told me in the course of a story last week, ""Everyone likes Rickie." He also added though it didn't make the story ..""He has a lot of talent."

That may be at least one reason he's still here.

Really, I'm not going to go around polling each player on Rickie. His popularity isn't an issue as far as I can see.

I, personally, would love to see him straighten himself out (for his own good), and also thus be in a position to help the team out.

As someone suggested here..would it kill him to go up to Dave and apologize for - among other things - not going in the game when Dave asked him?

But I'm not him or a teamate. I just report what happens and, on a personal note, it's been very frustrating to watch this play out, let me tell you.

Tony maybe the Sr should sit Rickie down and talk about LIFE.Maybe the kid needs some one that he trust to guide him back into the program.Sometimes a little help and understanding can be the spark to fix a problem. He is a young man who has his whole life in front of him, lets ALL hope he makes it at MU.Then you will have a great story about Rickie.

Tony you said Holland was at the MSM game and a post below said Rider was looking at him also...

tony any chance of them unredshirting T.J. to bring a spark off the bench and give our guards much needed minutes of rest. I read what you have written about him in the past and he would not embarass himself at all. People tend to forget that he was a recruited walk on and had other division 1 options. Seems like a realistic option to me.

Sounds like a plan to me......that should, or should have already been undertaken.

Re: the un-red shirting. They can do that. As a matter of fact I asked Dave about this last week, re: any of the red shirts. He (Calloway) said he would not ask anyone to take off the red shirt. That they (the players) have made the commitment to red shirt and he said it would be "unfair" to ask them to play now.

As for TJ - in my opinion - were he to play, he probably could help in this situation in that he could play some quality and or acceptable minutes, in my opinion.

Now, you're next question then is going to be -- if TJ or another player went to Dave and said he would like to toss asside his red-shirt to help the team in this - I guess we could call it depth crisis - what would Dave say?
Don't know. Don't know if he would tell me either.

If I see Bazaz or T.J. on the floor count me off the season ticket list -- Forever.

Sooooo...... you think..if TJ played like a few minutes here or there, the way the situation is now, as we speak, that would be a disaster? Have you seen him play in practice?

Don't get me wrong. He would not be a savior....but I think he could handle a few minutes.

But..anyway..it's not going to happen.

TJ was NOT a recruited walk-on. I have talked to the coaches about him, and while they have nice things to say about him, he was NOT recrutied by any means. He is redshirting for academic reasons, he is a good student and has a double major or something, so the extra year would help. As far as bball, I was told he plays hard, works hard, but is just a walk-on. He wasnt recruited, so Im not sure what that poster was referring to.

Who would knock Bazaz and TJ??? Are you jealous that you can't walk on the team so you blast them in a blog??? Well that's pretty pathetic if you ask me.

I would love to see Steve get more minutes, but who knows if that would be for the worse or the better. I'm sure having him there as an option though would be better than nothing. And as for TJ, well keep him redshirted. MU Basketball will need all the help it can get come next season.

Also, just because someone is not recruited does not mean they're a bad player. If they were a bad player, I can assure you they would not be on the team.

OK dude...Bottom line is the kid was NOT recruited and that came from the coaches mouths. So, im sorry to disappoint the TJ Tibbs fan club but it is factual. And walk-ons certainly serve a purpose, but it doesnt mean they are great players. Some at D-1 level wouldnt even have been D-3 starters.
