A suggestion for MU

I think they should have a "Miles Austin Night" at an upcoming men's home hoops game and honor him at halftime for his various accomplishments which I will not bother listing here. Miles indicated to me he will be home in Garfield NJ much of the winter and would definitely come down for a game..he may come anyway.

Maybe they can get from Dallas a picture of him scoring the TD vs. Seattle and present it to him at halftime of whatever game..much as they honor the seniors on hoops "Senior Night.""

My thought is it would be a great promotion. They shouldn't wait 2-3 years. It's difficult to predict what may happen in a pro football career Do it now when everyone is talking about him. He could sign autographs..etc. It would be a big deal.

I have already suggested this to Dave and left a cf message for coach Callahan, and will send a copy of this to Greg (I knew we'd beat the Giants!) Viscomi, MU football SID.

Maybe then can even retire his number? and hang it somewhere in the gym where it actually might be seen if you're not a pigeon.

Why not?. How many former MU athletes have played in the NFL.? Actually, they should retire a few hoops numbers too, one of these days. .....Alex Blackwell and Dave Calloway come to mind..but I'm getting off topic.

What do you think?

Tony I couldn't agree more. We really need to recognize him now while it all still fresh. It wont take much to put this together. We are usually a day late and a dollar short with everything that we do here. I hope this idea comes to fruition and they take it serious.

Dave really liked the idea....said he was going to bring it up in the athletic office Wednesday.

You're right.... It shouldn't take much to make this develop, but needs to be promoted well on campus and in the community.....which, to me anyway, has not been a mainstay at MU lately since Tom Manzo left athletics.

I think the real, cool part would be a lobby autograph session for kids (and anyone else who wants one) at some point before the game. Just my opinion.

MU has some two weeks now before the next men's home game. Let's see if they can rev this up, if they want.

Def. a good idea. How about Alex Blackwell night or John Giraldo or Rahsaan Johnson or Dave Calloway or some other Hawk hoop legend though? Would football honor a mens bball player? No. But I agree it is a nice idea.

Even though I did mention hoops..I wasn't really suggesting that for this year though if MU decides to broaden the scope, fine with me.

But I think - let's take this idea one step at a time.

Miles' leap into something of "celebrity status," at least locally with a national tinge, is current, timely, and over the next month or so would be the perfect time to recognize him for his feats and placing MU football on the national map.

I thought you took an un-called for shot at football though. Football games are not really conducive to halftime honorees in my opinion.

But how do you know they wouldn't honor a men's hoops player or someone from an another MU sport? Have they been asked? Has it been suggested? Don't know, but I sort of doubt it.

Well Tony, I kinda agree with the guy. The Football Team is not that supportive of the B'Ball Team. For instance, the B'Ball Team was made to attend a football game or two this year as a whole, however it has yet to be seen done on the flipside of the coin. At least as yet, and in my opinion I doubt that it will. I know this is not directly on topic just food for thought.

Let me just stop my head from spinning here.

How do we start by talking about honoring Miles Austin, to have the football team being pecked at for allegedly not supporting men's basketball enough?

I am not going to digress into into what MU team (s) show enough support for what team (s) (well, we know it's not women's basketball).

But anyway...this is about the school and maybe the Shore Community, honoring one of the truly remarkable individual athletic achievements by a former member of a major MU athletic team on a widely acclaimed national stage in the entire more than 60-year history of MU athletics.

That's what this is about. I, personally, think the other issues at this stage are a little petty. Make that A LOT petty.

Tony I agree with you, but Im also letting you know that there is some pettiness in place. MU basketball goes to football games period. MU football, maybe a handful go to the basketball games. WHy? Bball wins and the games are exciting. I'll tell you why, JEALOUSY. The football team feels as if they never get the attention, acclaim, or credit of basketball; thats just a fact Jack.

As an ex-MU bball player I will say this. Dave always asked us togo to football games or urged us to go to other sports whether we wanted too or not. We also had to help out at the trackmeet every year. Why? Because many sports supported us at our games. However, I never sensed that football made an effort to be there, except when they had a big recruit night. Other than that there were a handful out of many. It is actually kind of disappointing that it is still like this. This program has been so great for many sports, people should be supportive and take pride in what they have helped to create/build. I for one support a Miles Austin night, whether at mens basktetball, football, lacrosses, intramural volleyball, co-ed mud wrestling, or chess club. The kid is a winner and done well not only for himself, but also for MU.

Tony how did some of the readers of this blog get so confused by your suggestion. People it's not rocket science! All Tony is saying is this....
1)MU has an alum who plays in the NFL,(OUR ONE AND ONLY),he scored a 94 yard TD which happens to be the longest run in playoff history for the cowboys.

2)Miles is now some what of a "celebrity"...why not capture some of that excitement by honoring him on a night where people will be in Boylan gym. Sign autographs, make him feel good about his alma mater giving something back to him. I'm sure that the alumni will be reaching out to him for donations now that he has a few more zeros on his paycheck!

3)Basketball happens to be the only sport going on right now that is indoors. (Is there another place you think we can honor him? How about we all go out to Kessler Field in 30 degrees and have him sign autographs?)

It is really that hard to understand? The fact that one team doesn's attend another team's sport has NOTHING to do with this. Thing It's not about honoring him at a Basketball game, it's all about timing and we just happen to be in basketball season.

If that's a fact - Jack - and I'm not saying it is...it's still petty.... Gee.. I wonder if the golf team is jealous, too?

Co-ed mud wrestling would probably assure a sellout.

To the anonymous person that made those three points:

You certainly hit the issue dead center. How we got into who supports who is totally irrelevant to this subject.

If there are petty issues between teams...I doubt if that's unusual in colleges or even high schools for that matter.

I remember when I was in high school (it's amazing I still remember back to the days before man discovered fire era)...the band was upset because so few folks remained in the stands for their halftime performances.

"Would football honor a mens bball player? No. But I agree it is a nice idea. "

If the poster of this comment had been at the Monmouth football game this fall where the MU women's lacrosse team received their banners and rings, perhaps they would be more inclined to not make assumptions about the football team. Also, I don't think it is the teams themselves who decide what goes on at halftime as much as it is the administration.
