The MAAC: Newest letter to the editor published today

Sorry..did not attach comments link to earlier post on this..my bad

Misinformation on campus gym

Recently the Press has published letters opposing Monmouth University's proposed new campus athletic center (the MAAC). Complaints range from "cars parked on lawns," "hours" of traffic, parking congestion interfering with leaf collection and "wanton" expansion.

Parking interfering with leaf collection is a case of apples and oranges, irrelevant to the MAAC situation. The MAAC isn't even here yet, and obviously has nothing to do with current parking congestion. As for MAAC events worsening this situation, why would people attending MAAC events park anywhere other than in the Monmouth lot?

Another phony claim is that traffic now runs for hours after games. I've attended games for years, and the longest it's taken me to exit West Long Branch has been about 45 minutes. Monmouth has promised to hire security for MAAC, so traffic will probably flow even better.

As for cars on lawns, I know if I had someone's car on my lawn the police would soon be there and it wouldn't happen again. How can this exaggerated claim be taken seriously? Another false complaint is that of "wanton" expansion. The university is not expanding, it's building a gym within its campus.

These attempts to smear Monmouth use the classic approach of throwing enough dirt (and misinformation) at the wall and hoping some of it sticks.
