My MAAC thoughts

I, myself, have not been able to get a hold of anyone at MU today to see if they plan to appeal, etc.

My thoughts (in addition to some I mentioned on prior blogs on this subject)

1. As someone stated earlier, MU has taken the high road on this. Now, if I was MU, it's time to put some pressure on WLB via whatever means necessary (legal of course) but whatever means necessary.

2. Explore off campus options for a MAAC. I know MU doesn't want to take this route but if they want this facility to be built in a "timely fashion," and if they feel it will take years to resolve the issue with WLB, it may be the only route.

3. Bottom line: I feel MU needs a MAAC if it is to remain competitive in D 1 at the level it has reached, hopes to maintain, and rise above.

Tony I think the students should boycott all of the WLB businesses that are used daily. The best way to hit someone is in the pocket. The student and employees of the university spend millions of dollars each year in this town. A coordinated boycott would really make them wake up. This is absolutely a shame that a town has this much hatred toward a university that has done everything in its power to play nice. And I think you are right, its time to take off the gloves off and come out swiniging.

Tony,

Here's the absurdity of the situation (and it should be brought to the attention of MU's attorney):

Currently MU can squeeze about 2800 people into Boylan. It can do that an UNLIMITED amount of times during basketball (or any other) season.
It has NO responsibility on town streets for traffic control.

If the MAC were built, MU would be restricted to about 15 dates where attendance would be 4000 or over.
If the MAC were built, MU would be responsible for hiring police or security guards to move traffic along.
If the MAC were built, MU would pay for traffic-calming devices along bordering streets.

WE'RE TALKING ABOUT 1200 OR SO MORE PEOPLE ABOVE OUR CURRENT CAPACITY!!!
With police directing traffic, we both know that it would flow just as well (and probably better) than it does when we have a big crowd now! It's a joke that these people object to the kind of 'crowds' we're talking about!

Of course, none of this matters if, as I believe, this was just politics, and the few in the area with power, overrode the many without it.

First of all, I just spoke with Patrician L. Swannack, university vice president for administrative
services, who told me the school is "evaluating its options" at this time.

I totally agree with you. I had thought of this (student boycott, and some other avenues they could pursue) but it may not be my place to make such dramatic suggestions.

I have also offered some thoughts on prior blog topics on this issue.

You are correct. MU needs it students to get inolved at some levels and make their voices and opinions heard..and if they (students) are not that interested or care to be involved, well, do they deserve a MAAC then?

If students, or anyone want to make their opinions known (on a high level of course and in a public forum) there is a 1 p.m. men's hoops game at Boylan Gym Sunday, just thought I'd mention it.

Overall, MU is very influencial locally and it's time for the school to be less of a nice guy and start exerting that influence on this issue, in my opinion.

For three people to be allowed to stall the progress, athletics and otherwise of a University and an entire community for that matter, is, in my opinion, absurd.

Tony,If this vote was for a Temple or a Church ,how do you think the vote would have gone? The Mayor is the issue, she HATES MU. The students should boycott every business in WLB.

I agree she the famous Mayor has said she will STOP MU in there tracks. She HATES all that MU stands for.Why I dont know, but the facts are true she will do anything to stop the progress of MU. Ask her about her plans for low income homes in WLB,she will run for the hills.
