Babbling Brooke

With leading scorer Jennifer Bender out with an injury freshman Brooke McElroy came off the bench to score 14 points in 27 minutes and sophomore Marisa Jimenez had 14 points including key baskets and free throws down the stretch in an NEC opening 69-63 win for the MU women's basketball team (5-3, 1-0), at St. Francis, NY (2-7, 0-2). More info on the game at the MU web site from EO.

Look for the Hawks to be among the upper echelon in the NEC this season. In my opinion this is a good team worthy of watching.

Isn't it a shame that no one cares even one iota about the girl's basketball program?

Well....I know one person who cares..A LOT..and that would be the AD.

I cover many of their home games (and some away) and they have a small (very small) group of loyal rooters.

Sustained winning would, in itself, boost interest some what and they are a winning program, but haven't taken it to the NEC championship level.

A number of years ago MU and some other NEC teams opted to let the women's games sail by themselves as opposed to doubleheaders with the men's games.

I said at the time I didn't think it was a good move..and to try and schedule more DHs as they did back in the 80's and early 90's (they weren't packing them in then either) but that's not the way they decided to go.

Even that would not be a cure all by any means..but I don't see how it would hurt.

If you check around women's hoops at MU's level (NEC, Patriot League, Ivy League, MAAC, etc.) are not major draws.)..it's not just MU.

Tony, there should be considerable buzz around the women's team. Michele is a good coach who relates well with the players and the team is pulling off the rare feat of being young and experienced at the same time. Their rotation features only one senior and they don't rely on one scorer, night in and night out it's someone else who steps up, like Jimenez and McElroy last night. This team is and should be a NEC force for many seasons to come.

I like the depth and athleticism of this club. That they could win an NEC road game without their leading scorer (Jen Bender) and against Wiltina Chamberlin( my nickname for 6-7 SFNY junior Katja Bavedam), speaks well for this team.

In Sept-OCT. when I was watching the team shoot around in the gym McElroy looked impressive. And Jimenez rising to the occasion was certainly big Sunday.

In the NEC, defending champion Sacred Heart, Quinnipic, and Robert Morris, all appear formidable but the Hawks should be in the hunt.

This is a junior laden club..that - on paper - would seem to be a year away...but, maybe not.
