Last Game: Down by one with the ball on the final possession, Hartford came up just short against
Penn State University, 56-55, on Wednesday night at the Bryce Jordan Center. Senior Alex Zimnickas
pulled down a huge defensive rebound with 30 seconds to play to give the Hawks a final chance at
taking out the first Big Ten opponent in school history. After Hartford called a timeout with 12.3
seconds remaining, freshman Joe Zeglinski forced up the potential game-winning shot. The attempt
fell short, and though sophomore Michael Turner came up with the offensive rebound, he was never
able to attempt a putback after being swarmed by defenders. Penn State had led by as many as 11
points in the second half before the Hawks made a charge, eventually taking a 55-54 lead on a threepointer
by sophomore Jaret Von Rosenberg with 2:48 to play. Senior Bo Taylor led four Hawks in
double figures with 12 points while Turner recorded his first double-double with career highs of 11
points and 10 boards.

New Offense, New Defense: The returning players will have to adjust to
new coaching styles on both sides of the ball. Head coach Dan Leibovitz
is implementing a motion offense, a system that utilizes movement, cutting
and passing to score points. On the other end of the floor, the Hawks will
use various aggressive zone defenses to keep opponents off the scoreboard.
The Hawks were a mediocre defensive team last season, yielding 67.8
points per contest. With a renewed emphasis on defense, Leibovitz hopes
that the Hawks won’t have to solely rely on their offense to win games.

Head Coach
Dan Leibovitz
First Season • Pennsylvania ’96
Record at Hartford: 3-4
Overall Record: Same
America East Record: First Season
vs. Monmouth: First Meeting
About The Coach: Leibovitz spent the last 10 seasons as an assistant
coach at Temple University under Hall of Fame head coach John
Chaney. He joined the Temple staff at the start of the 1996-97
season and helped the Owls to 10 straight postseason appearances,
including five NCAA Tournaments (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000,
2001) and a pair of Elite Eight appearances (1999, 2001). Temple
also won four Atlantic 10 Conference regular season championships
(1998, 1999, 2000, 2002) and two conference championships
(2000, 2001) during his tenure, which tied for the longest among
current A-10 assistant coaches. As Chaney’s right-hand man and
top recruiter, his record while on the Owl staff was 201-124 (.618).
Prior Experience: Though Hartford is his first head coaching job,
Leibovitz served as “acting coach” for six games while at Temple. He
went 3-2 in 2005 during the final three regular season contests and
two A-10 Tournament games as Chaney served a suspension.
Leibovitz then served as head coach for the final game of the 2005-
06 season against Akron in the NIT. The results of the six games
were credited to Chaney’s overall record.

What’s My Age Again?: Dan Leibovitz is one of the youngest head
coaches in the country and the youngest in the America East. At 33
years of age, he is older than only six other Division I head coaches.

MY PICK: This was going to be a tough one even before MU lost to LIU. MU needs to get off to a decent start for once. MU stiffens the defense. Bunch makes a difference. Monmouth, 58-56.
