More LIU game thoughts and musings/quick look at Hartford

A few things just to bring everyone on board with my post game schedule..

After games I have to write the stories first before I hit the blog..than usually I take some time to go home after the game before delving into the blog in earnest.

On road games it'll be probably be longer before I get to the blog..(like very late at night or the next morning but that can't be helped) though I may try to just run the posts without initially commenting if I can get to them ..

I know most of you under stand but I am just mentioning it anway....and thanks to everyone for posting .

Now ..today I am heading over to practice and will file a practice report in the evening and then later the story for tomorrow's Press...

In a way there were some things to probably be encouraged about Thursday night..certainly Jhamar electrified the crowd and Nunner again made contributions...but scoring was not the problem.

I'm wondering if when MU goes small - are they then too small?..Size is an advantage they have.

Bunch just had a bad game is my take..got in foul trouble..then when they fell so far behind they had to go small to scramble back into it...Corey is just not playing well or with any confidence....especially on offense....

Nunner had taken two foul shots in his career before sinking three in a row last night...yes, again. Shipman took an ill-advised shot there but it did not cost them the game...I think everyone would take his line most (all!) nights.....

The fans were really into the comeback last night....I think you have to give LIU credit for not crumbling when MU cut it to two..they do have a veteran club..especially Williams. Sometimes you also have to give the other team credit for making shots...
I liked Ferry's comments where he said in the past they might have "freaked out."

Notice though they were smacked by Hartford (3-4) which give Georgetown and Penn State competitive games and is MU's next foe here on Saturday..Hartford has a new coach..plays the Princeton style I am told..and is apparently much better than the team MU defeated last year..

If you get a chance check out the LIU-Hartford box score on the NEC web site..in that game LIU shot 9-for-35 from 3, had 10 assists and 24 turnovers...!!

Re: Corey Hallett. We are not turning this blog into a Corey Crunch.

Yes...we are aware he is a scholarship DI player not performing as well as fans would like, as he would like, etc, etc.
And I have noted this as well.

Those of you who know Corey know he is a teriffic kid, full of energy and enthusiasm, and has made himself a viable part of the MU community.

I think he is still capable of a decent season.

Meanwhile.....there will not be any more Corey crunching on this blog.....period!!! It serves no purpose.

If you want to e-mail me about this: tonygsports@aol.com..

Tony,

I couldn't resist to post after you mentioned this. I understand and can appreciate MU fan's discontent with the team and even dissatisfaction with individual players, and this forum should be open to constructive criticism. However, I can also appreciate and empathize with how Corey is feeling right now. I had similar struggles as Corey in my senior season after three decent years, and I too felt the pressure of wanting to please everyone at times. In the end, Corey needs to play for himself and do the best he can do to help the team win. I struggled alot learning to accept a role as more of a role player as a senior, and it is a difficult transition. In the end, I was able to accept a more diminished role for team success, and Corey will do the same. He has great character and is an extremly hard worker and great teammate. Fans should feel free to state their opinions, but understand that Corey is a college kid who loves to play and I'm sure struggling mightily with his frustrations. He does not need to hear other people moaning and groaning about him, because if he is like me, he's hard enoug on himself and upset in his performance. To Corey: keep working hard and and embrace whatever role you need to help the team win. It is very frustrating, especially as a senior to have to take a lesser role, but in the end winning an NEC championship is so much more worth any individual achievments and I mean that wholeheartedly. Coach Calloway and the staff want to win, and should make the decisions they feel will best help the team win. Corey, hang in there, and everyone else give the kid a break, believe me he feels bad enough. Hopefully the team will perform better tomorrow. Thanks Tony.

From what I see and hear,it's hard for Jayson, and the die-hard fan to give an "out-of-the-box opinion about this situation. I have been coaching for more than 25 years and have studied the game of basketball on all levels. I agree that no one should single-out the players (although they are on the floor). This game is 80% mental. Jayson mentioned in one of his post that Dave's system has been in place and has worked in the past and it will not change. Jayson also mentioned that the school should recruit players that "fit" the system. Well he answered the question to the problem and gave the solution also.
Monmouth has some very talented players that would strive in other systems. From the first time I saw Corey, I liked his game. In the right system, he could be that "High Energy" player who is the "Blue Collar" guy surrounded by good athlets. He is not the only one on the team who does not "fit" in Dave's system. Had Marcus been in the Big East or the MAAC, he would be an very successful player. The "clutch" shots are good, but he will never have the consistant games he will need to be successful. Do you really need to have a 7'-3" player setting a high screen to get open? There are a lot of freshman and sophmores I coached against on the AAU circuit, that has the same talent as shipman and coleman that are doing very well on their respective teams.
No matter how much Dave tell them, if they don't fit mentally, they won't fit physically.
Give it some thought.

Monmouth is not the place for Muti-talented Athlets.

I hope in the future, the Coaches will stop bringing in those type of players if the system will not change.

All I can tell you is that "Dave's system" taken from a guy named Szoke, and modled after a system coached by a guy named Pete Carril, seems to have worked really well over the years.

Did Blake Hamilton thrive in this system.?..he was only NEC Player of the Year, Rahsaan Johnson (OK, he had his own system), Corey Albano? John Giraldo..etc. etc.

The matchup zone..when played correctly...has led the NEC in defense most years.

Re" Marques Alton. First, I have the upmost respect for Marques as a player and as an individual.

But please..he would, in my opinion, struggle in the Big East.

His heart could play 100 per cent, but for you to say he could physically perform successfully on the Big East level might not be realistic.

But if you can play, you can be successful in "Dave's system.''

It is not a "run and gun" type of game but MU does play up tempo more than people give it credit for and does not discourage fast breaks or shooters from shooting. Dave led the nation one year in 3-point shooting..soo..I guess he shot occasionally.

It does attempt to create high percentage shots. Last I heard..that was a good thing.

If you're a multi talented athlete MU will give you an ample opportunity to display those talents ...on offense AND defense.

But it is also a system where..if you are a "system player" you can thrive.

Tony you are right on the issues. The Mu system will work this season ,its not easy to learn fast, and it take a few leaders to run it well.Corey will have a good game tonight,as will the rest of the team.
