You be the MU coach

Your team just looked awful in being blown out by SHU. You have one day of practice Wednesday (Tuesday was an NCAA mandated off day) before the NEC season opener Thursday at Boylan with LIU.

Your are Dave Calloway. What do you do?

Lineup changes? Rotation changes? Style changes? Other changes? Make no drastic changes?

I shake things up....Corey Hallet out, John Bunch in, Corey prove to me that you deserve to be on the court. Marques Alston out of the starting lineup, show some leadership and play harder, and same with Deki Delic. No style change, but demand more from the players.

The fans whining here about style change are so pathetic. Clearly you dont know anything about MU hoops then. Theyve ran the same offensive and defensive system for years and won games. If you like up tempo jack shots up and run and gun basketball go watch FDU or some other team. Youre not going to get that kind of play. The style is what has made this program successful, maybe the coaches should recruit better kids who know how to run this type of offense and be selective and patient.

Hi I am Dave Calloway in this role play scenario, and I would like to tell you the following fact you may not know about Monmouth Hoops. Ready, ok! Monmouth University's mens basketball team is the only team in the Metropolitan Area to have six straight winning seasons!

FDU lost by 22 to Drexel tonight, who lost to Rider, who lost to...Monmouth. What does this all mean nothing!

At least you've been paying attention.

Maybe you'd rather have it the other way around?

It's fun to compare how teams fare out of league..but you're soooo correct..it's often meaningless when it comes to an NEC barometer of how NEC teams will compete vs. each other.

Wagner went 7-2 non-league last year. Remember? How'd they do?

Just wanted to say thankfully we have Coach Calloway who will do everything in his power to right this ship and pull out the W on Thursday night. Support Coach Calloway, his system, his staff, his players and MU Basketball, because when you add it all together you get WINNERS!

Seriously, why is there so much negativity right now? The Hawks can still easily win 20 games and win the NEC if they continue to improve. We want a "7th winning season."

I hope the team has a wake up call like they did 2 years ago after the huge Villanova loss. I remember Dave saying that the team turned the corner after that blowout. I think this will work itself out on its own. The players were embarrassed and this should be the wake up call to the senior players that they need to step up and get the job done and demand that the younger player pull their weight.

Marques Alston and Deki Delic out of the starting 5? You gotta be kidding me! The person who said that apparently has not been to one MU basketball game this year. Deki and Marques are the two leading scores this year, Deki having 53 points in two games in Texas AND 25 vs. Rider, with 20 in the second half...Marques should not even be brought up in conversation...Mr. Clutch the past few years. He comes ready to play every game.

Don't hit the panic button yet guys. Monmouth was 1-7 last year around this time...

This blog is ridiculous and irrelevent to the game of basketball. All it does is bring these kids down. Alot of you people are grown men, bashing college students about how they work. What if they all went to your jobs and criticized you everytime you did something wrong.

I believe the coaches may be pondering more of a three-guard lineup, Shipman, Coleman, and "Jet" with Marques and Delic up front..for starters anyway. Not etched in stone by any means.

Then rotate in Bunch for some major minutes.

And perhaps Nunner can pop a few more 3's off the bench.

I hope to be at practice Wednesday.

Basically what I see is fan discussion about MU athletics. Yes, there has been criticism but there also has been praise and some very insightful posts as well.

This blog, by the way, received over 10,000 hits last month, second most read blog at the Press to a political reporter.

Several thousand more views than even high school football which has surprised the heck out of me.

I try to allow people to have their say but, at the same time, frown on rumors and personality issues.

No blog can be perfect but I hope this is providing a service for, and a forum for, discussion of MU athletic teams.

I encourage discussion of all local college sports in the Monmouth-Ocean area but MU men's hoops and football seem to rule.

I agree with whom ever is saying that people need to calm down with all the negativity. Put everything into consideration: 1) somewhat difficult non-conference schedule so far, especially the two trips early on, 2) minus Chris and Tyler, plus Ship and Whit into the starting lineup, they're only sophomores with a lot of expectations on them right now, they are good players so give them time, and 3) a short bench, Bunch isnt 100%, Nunner off to a slow start, and Cory is struggling mightly so far.. so having 3 of your top 8 players under-performaning would make any team struggle.

As for the blowout loss to SHU, I spoke to Gary Cohen at halftime(the SHU play by play guy) and he said that the first half was the best half SHU played all season, they hit almost 60% of their shots and did not turn the ball over(usually they shoot ALOT and turn it over as much as the opposition). So couple together SHU best game of the year and MU's worst game and there ya go, you have your 34 point blow out.

Lets see what Thursday night can bring for the Hawks, they should be completely fired up. An NEC game, at home in front of a packed house with the band, cheerleaders and dance team, and a sense of urgency... they know they need this win. Lets Go Hawks!

The system works - just need better execution. The young guys on the team will break out - it's just a matter of time. You can quote me on that!

Thanks for the blog Tony! This is the only place for MU fans to discuss - maybe someone should get you a weekly TV show on local tv???

Thanks for representing the needs of the Monmouth faithful!

I tend to read this blog from time to time and today, I decided to check things out, hoping to hear some feedback on the SHU game and predictions on the upcoming LIU game. To my dismay, I find someone suggesting that the coaches remove the three senior starters!!!!! This is crazy talk!!!! From what I have seen, all three work extremely hard in practices and typically will call out their teammates when they are not working hard as expected. The loss Monday night was not just the fault of Marcus, Deki or Corey! It was a collective team effort, no one person is at fault. The guards need to become more efficient at getting the ball inside, Corey, Marcus and Bunch are not getting the touches they need. The mentality seems to be get the ball and toss up a three (which I may add is a LOW PERCENTAGE shot to begin with) or drive to the net defended by 4 other players. I think you will see changes to the 2nd year guards if anything is changed in the starting line up.

In response to this comment : "To loyal MU fan: this is an open forum to both praise and constructively criticize."

I have seen little praise over the past few weeks. The majority of the comments have been focuses on one player and how they "cannot play" In my opinion this is NOT constructive criticism.

I think the 3 guard approach is the way to go - Shipman, Coleman, Youngblood, Delic and Alston. The centers get very few rebounds anyway. Bunch is at least a large presense but Corey really hasn't done much.

Well said last post. Noooooow you guys agree with what I said way back after leaving Virginia. Better late than never though. That is the way to go it appears. Corey is off to a slow start and Bunch is struggling. Get them in and get them out just for relief and a change up. The three guards, Marc and Deki - let's do the darn thing!

Number one I would stop YELLING during the T/O . Tell Mike Ship to STOP shooting the three so fast,2-25, he is not running the system . Remove Corey from the starting line up and go small. Then sub in Bunch and make sure they get him the ball down low. Marcus needs the ball in his hands more. I would be working extra hard on recruiting for next season, maybe the JUCO route.I would buy pizza for the guys and watch game tapes and teach and teach .Just a few ideas.

I would learn how and when to call a time out.SH blow out run was a joke no time out untill TV T/O ????.Dave didnt use all his time outs anyway! Put Corey on the bench he is killing the team, just look at his STATS you dont have to be the MU coach to figure that one out. Run a few new plays, how about getting the ball to BUNCH.Tony do think we need a coaching change to go to the next level?

It's not all that easy , virtually impossible really, to make it to "the next level" on a consistent basis, especially from the NEC. Though you need to explain to me your take on the "next level."

Look at Bucknell, a Cinderella team type the last two years, now 3-3. George Mason, last year's Glass Slipper is 3-5 (lost to Bucknell). Vermont beat BC this year, but is 4-4 and just barely beat winless Delaware.

I am not, by any means, knocking any of these programs, all from leagues rated higher than the NEC (I think the Shore Conference might be ranked higher at the moment), just illustrating how tough it is to first defeat "next level" teams and then also remain at that level.

I know you want MU to beat a BIG TIME team and it has done that though not lately (unless you consider Southern Ill. last year in that strata).

I would like to see Dave recruit a few more athletes though actually, this is a fairly athletic team by MU standards, especially if Crews ever plays.

Give Dave a new gym and, maybe a higher level league, in that order, then see what happens.

Tony good points, the high rate of player turn over the past few years (per blogs) plus all the hype by the Dave in your paper about Ricky we are only looking for results. With RMU now 14th in the mid major ranking, only adds fuel for blogging. You would think with the " only winning record over the past 6 yrs in the northeast by D-1 programs" Monmouth Basketball would have improved more in all areas .The next level is another great Blogger topic.Lets get a post going.

I usually have no problem with the timing on Dave TOs. This is a part of the game easy for fans (and even sports writers!) to pick a part.

If you notice he'll take a time out in the middle of a play, especially late, if he thinks the offense is bogging down

He could have taken 25 TOs Monday and it would have made no difference.

We did a whole blog topic on "the next level" a while back..but feel free to add more comments here...

For MU fans...I wouldn't be concerned with "the next level" right now, just wins, at least until Loyola Marymount rolls in.
