For the first time in his 10 years as Monmouth University men's
basketball coach Dave Calloway will be facing one of his former assistants.
Geoff Billet, a Monmouth assistant for the last five years under Calloway, will be on
the bench for Seton Hall University when the Hawks (3-5) visit the Big East Pirates
Monday at the Meadowlands.
""It's going to be interesting,'' said Calloway.
How Billet, former CBA and Rutgers standout feels about it, is
unknown.
Seton Hall coach Bobby
Gonzalez has placed his subordinates off limits to interviews.
Calloway said Billet's intricate knowledge of Monmouth's motion offense and
match up zone defense will take away from an advantage Monmouth often enjoys
over non Northeast Conference opposition.
"But even with him (Billet) knowing that, more of a factor usually is
when we play
a team from the Big East, they have players who play in the Big East,'' said
Calloway.
""We have players who play for us and that's probably still the biggest
factor.
It's certainly not going to hurt them that they're going to be well
prepared for us.''
Billet and the Pirates will no doubt be a little extra wary of Monmouth if
only because Seton Hall was upset Nov. 18 by Fairleigh Dickinson of the NEC.
""They're (Seton Hall) going to be fine and he's (Billet) going to do well whereever he
is,''said Calloway. ""He's that type of successful person.''
A Seton Hall trademark has been full court defensive pressure
which has caused Monmouth problems this season.
'"We're preparing for it,'' said Calloway. ""But when it comes down to
preparing for teams in the Big East or when we played Clemson of the ACC (in the
Cox Classic last month) or even Old Dominion (in the Cox Classic) or Houston
(which Monmouth visited Nov. 18), it's not what they're doing that's going to
hurt us,''said Calloway. ""It's who'se doing it.''
Calloway said Monmouth can't simulate in practice the caliber of
athlete it will often face when it tangles with "Big Time" programs.
""The difference here is they can't simulate what we do on the offensive
and defensive end because we're a little unique,'' said Calloway.
""The one advantage they have now is they've got a guy on their staff who
knows exactly what we do.''
Monmouth is 0-29 vs. current members of the Big East and 0-7 vs. Seton Hall.
NOTES...Calloway said freshman guard Yaniv Simpson (shins, knees) will be
out of action for about a week.

The Hawks should beat Seton Hall rather easily. All they have do is stay with small line-up. Because we haven't got much help from the front line player's. Therefore the Hawk's must push their opponent by spreading the floor. Then hit a few jumpshot's, as per Saint Joseph in 05, Nova 06.
A side issue from the Seton Hall game --
Just checked on the internet on the guard MU has coming in next year (James Hett - Monsignor Farrell, Staten Island):
On Fri. night he scored 29 (20 in 2nd half) to lead his undefeated (3-0) team to a close victory. The Staten Island paper (SI Advance) highlighted him as 'stealing the game' for his team.
Good News! Could be a help next year????
Haven't seen anything yet on the other kid (Del Tufo - Mendham). May not have started their season yet.
Excuse me?
Excuse me?
The "excuse me" referred to the top post. Made no sense to me.
Hett? Next year? Hard to say. With the three guards returning they should be in very decent shape in the back court.
But I have a saying, "You can never have enough good players."
Tony,
I was able to stop by practice today for just the second time this year. Overall, I didn't think that the team looked too good. They had a day off yesterday, so maybe there was a combination of being tired from the Rider game and some lag from a day off, who knows. The coaches really stressed not turning the ball over, which fans will be happy to hear. They worked on breaking pressure and then either attacking or getting into their offense.
The team had to run because of a string of turnovers, but after the running they seemed to be more meticuous with the decision making.
I think overall tomorrow night will be an exciting game. The athleticism of SHU may present some difficulties for MU, but again, if they can avoid a plague of turnovers they should be able to hang with Seton Hall. I think upfront Bunch and Corey might be able to get some things going, because the SHU frontline isn't all that talented. I dont know if there is any decision over whether Crews will make the trip/play, but I'll tell you what, if he could just get his act together and focus, he has a chance to be an impact player in the NEC. He's got a great bball body, is long and athletic, and shoots the ball with range from the perimeter. I think Mike Shipman and Youngblood will have to be composed under the duress they will be facing with the quick SHU guards, and if they can do a solid job, the Hawks have a chance to pull off a big upset.
Unfortunately I will be unable to attend, but I will have my blackberry refreshing to get score updates, and will try to make both home games on Thursday and Saturday.
Tony is it too early to request some MU-SHU predictions, and how about at this point, what does everyone think the MU record will end up for the year?
Tony, where are you we need our Hawks fix soon!
Please go to next blog...on predictions..thank you
I am ready to look forward to Seton Hall now that the Rider game has passed us by. It looks like a game that MU can be competitive in, and also have a chance to steal. I don't want to get ahead of myself as I have been at this game the last 2 yrs. when MU has been competitive in the first halves and gotten run out of the building in the 2nd halves. However, Seton Hall is not as talented as the last few years and not as strong inside (goodbye Kelly Whitney, finally). So here goes the scouting report on SHU:
Guards:
Nutter, Harvey and Gause form a strong 3 man backcourt rotation, with Gause offerring a scoring punch off of the bench. Harvey is more of a slasher and passer than a deepthreat, so MU has to be aware of that. Being a freshman, he has been quite promising so far this yr. for the Hall. Nutter and Gause are both dynamite scorers and very good outside shooters who can really hurt MU if they get it going. MU has to be aware of these two players when they're in the game, especially with the quick swing into the corner for 3 point attempts to beat the matchup zone. Monmouth's guards (Whit, Ship and Jet) need to limit their turnovers and recognize the shooters on this SHU backcourt. Hopefully they can rattle the rookie into some turnovers and have that be an advantage for once this year.
Forwards: Brian Laing is the Hall's leading scorer, but at 6'5 is not a true dominant inside player. He is however very strong at 215 lbs. and athletic, which could hurt MU. He is averaging 7 rpg, however I think that MU's big bodies along with Alston's wide body can do a good job keeping him off the boards. The other major contributer at forward is Stan Gaines (6'7 242). Gaines is a strong defensive forward, who will probably get the task of neutralizing Alston tomorrow night. Gaines is a role player who is averaging 9 ppg and 5 rpg, but is not exactly an offensive juggernaught for the Hall. The biggest impact he could have on this game is trying to shut down Marques. These forwards are comparable with the MU duo of Marques/Deki, and the matchup of the forwards could sway who will win this game.
Center: The Seton Hall center is Grant Billmeir. I've seen him play many times at the JSBL over the summer, and he is a player that is lacking in talent. However, GB offers hustler and heart along with 4.8 ppg and 3.8 rpg for the Hall. I feel that Corey and Bunch are a significant advantage for MU at this position.
Again, I am not calling for the upset; but it is possible. I am very excited, anybody else coming tomorrow night?
To MU Mystery Coach:
I have read some of your posts, and they are very insightful and indepth. Are you a former player, coach, just a ball/Hawk enthusiast? I know good magicians never unveil all their secrets, but who is this international man of mystery?
MU didnt play St. Joseph in 2005, right?
MU beat St. Joes in the mid 90's in a tournament in Wyoming ..MU has never beaten Villanova..or come that close for that matter...don't know what this person was talking about....
Tony who is the MU Mystery Coach? Any thoughts, guesses?
To anonymous:
Well then it's quite a mystery now isn't it?
I cannot reveal my identity, it'd be as bad as when KISS took off their facepaint.
Sorry to the confused. Didn't say MU ever played either team. Just speaking in reference to the small line-up that those teams have played with and were a force to be reckoned with. Stay with me fellas. TG please don't tell me you couldn't relate. Gosh!
Going back to st. joes/nova reference..reference to st joes in 2005 threw me off...was thinking back on nova in the past and not about the NCAAs.
Ok TG you get a free pass on that one, good save. You slippin man! LOL
