I'm not sure what to say exactly. Many things come to mind. We were outcoached and outplayed. Field position was everything today. I loved the play with Mandeville running the WR option pass. Unfortunately, McClelland slipped and fell or else I think it was a touchdown (looked like he had his man beaten). That hurt as 2 plays later, Boland threw the 2nd int. I thought the offensive play calling was very suspect, and it hurt that San Miguel was severely limited in the 2nd half. I know it worked all season, but I hate the running back by committee. I also felt Boland made a couple of poor decisions on the option choice play (either hands it off or takes off). He should have taken off with it a few more times than he did. He had some running room. Monmouth also ran way too many slip screens that San Diego was all over. I did want to see a screen pass to Sinisi, but I don't think we ran one. If Monmouth had played a little better on offense, I think MU could have won. San Diego's offense didn't impress me all that much. Johnson made a couple of big plays with his legs to keep drives alive (partially our defensive schemes, partially players not making plays).

Well, not to simplify matters (but, hey, why not?) Johnson was as good as advertised though he he did not overwhelm the MU defense.

But he did make key plays, kept drives alive, and changed field position even if he didn't take then in for scores on every possession.

Boland just did not have a good game, plain and simple, and it was a game where MU could not have turnovers and key penalties which cost MU two potential scores and gave away another.

The INT for a TD was a killer, and then the penalty on the Sinisi run wiped out a potential MU TD, and the second half pick wrecked another one.
And San Miguel's ankle had to be a factor.

USD had one big drive. The other two were set up by short fields.

Harbaugh said after the game if Johnson was eligible for the draft right now he'd be a first day pick.

An NFL scout I saw at the game said..the kid would be "fringe pick" period, as of today.

But remember, he's only a junior.

USD has a ton of kids back for next year including Johnson so they'll win the PL again..

MU wouldn't mind a trip to San Diego this time of year!

Any more thoughts on the game? The season? Next year?

Tony,

I wasn't thrilled with San Diego's touchdown pass attempt with 1 minute left in the game and up 27-7. Harbough should've shown more class at that point.

Definitely not MU's day. As for next year's possibility of MU visiting San Diego this time of year, how's the QB situation shaping up? I think that will be the big key for next year. While Boland didn't play well today (albeit it was tough not having his main target out there in San Miguel), he was still the offense's main "cog" in getting all the aspects of that offense to work on the field and had several years to learn it very well.

Rough game- bad luck for the hawks. Johnson was ok - honestly don't really see the big deal over him though. Maybe he'd get drafted in Canada. More a product of Harbaughs "junk TD offense."

Speaking of Harbaugh, he is a "fill in the blank" for calling that TD attempt at the end of the game. Now I see why he was pushed out of the NFL coaching circle and why JJ's stats are so ridiculous.
CLASSLESS.

Cheers to the Hawks on a great season - Boland will be one of the last great non-scholie QB's for MU. Retire #12!

Boland had a fabulous career..no question..and what a great kid..

Whether he threw game winning TD passes or interceptions (including Saturday) he always talked about it and never blamed anyone but himself when things went wrong...

Callahan had no comment after the game about USD's late TD pass attempt...In my opinion, he did not seem upset, seemed more amused by it than anything else..

Bottom line is that USD beat MU by 20. Not sure how a team that gets beat by 3 TD's can say they weren't impressed by the other team. What would the score had to have been for MU to be impressed? USD scored 27 on a defense that most NEC fans said would shut USD down. Apparently USD is a lot better than most people think....and MU fans thought they should get into the playoffs before USD? I think that question has been answered....

I hate to break it to you but USD never was even recommended by its own region for entrance into the 1-AA playoffs. I have that from a very good source.

Either way...the difference Saturday was clearly Josh..and yes, that makes USD a better team.

BUT..put Josh under center for MU Saturday..and guess who wins?

MU did not shut down USD offense..I, for one, never said they would. I felt MU needed to hold USD to three TD or less to win and....they did (20 points scored vs. the MU defense) and two on short drives.

MU went out and, with the exception of Cal Davis played, in my opinion, a schedule similar to USD overall.

But please...Azuzi Pacific or whatever it is? Give me a break. Dixie State? I thought it was Dixie Cup. That's like playing two games against a low MAAC school's JV.

But we're splitting hairs here and no disrespect meant to USD.

Josh is the best QB I have seen MU face..period...and the big DE and Hannula at corner were excellent.

MU fans would like to know - can you get Josh to declare for the NFL...like tomorrow?

To USD folks..no question you will be a force again in 2007..you need to line up an all 1-AA schedule though so.. if you go 11-0 or drop a game to a Cal Davis type you'll be - I would think - near lock for the 1-AA playoffs...with Josh back and his mushrooming reputation I would think the 1-AA committee would want USD in the post season..hey..maybe MU (if it's not in the playoffs) could visit Jacksonville.. they could live with that!

USD lost to UC Davis, who beat Montana State 45-0 in Bozeman. USD only lost by 10 in Davis. And MSU has 63 more scholarships than USD.

Our only loss was on the road to a team that SMOKED a team that hosted and won a playoff game at home by 10 points.

If you think USD is soley about Josh Johnson you have no clue. That was the same mistake Yale made (co-Ivy Champs) when we SMOKED them as well at Yale. USD 48 Yale 17.

Dixe State is a DII scholarship team, and Azusa Pacific is a scholarship school as well. In case you didn't know Christian Okoye went to Azusa and he did OK in the NFL....

Yes - USD did have 2 non IAA teams on its scheudle but its results against Yale, Davis, and MU show that it is a legit team. If you think losing to USD by 20 at your place sucked, imagine if the game had been in the friendly confines of Torero Stadium with great weather and Josh throwing for 300 plus yards etc.....it would have been VERY ugly for MU. Sorry to break it to you but USD is the better team this year.....

Just my opinion....but MU never had a chance in this game. No one wants to admit a non-scholarship is better than them, but it is reality for many teams.

Just for the record..MU gave out maybe 10 scholarships this year and only a handful of those players (freshman) played all year and none were regulars...

I think the teams are about even..except at QB...that's my opinon...and thus is USD the better team...yes it is.....

Again..I take nothing away from USD and your win over MU should help your quest to reach the 1-AA playoffs next year..
