News from today's MU hoops practice/Shipman won't start/Crews suspended for a week

I haven't had a chance yet to check the blog since I put the LIU info on...I will get to it a bit later after I write for tomorrow's paper

Thank you for your under standing..

Anyway.. the news is, sophomore point guard "Mike Shipman will not start Thursday (vs. LIU) because he was late for class,'' coach Dave Calloway told me and Calloway also said, freshman "Rickie Crews has been suspended from all basketball activities for one week for violation of team code of conduct. He will go to class and study hall,'' Calloway said.

Calloway said Shipman ""eventually will play" Thursday and that freshman Jhamar Youngblood will start in the back court with Whitney Coleman. Otherwise there are no changes to the lineup.

Practice today, in my opinion, was rather quiet, not much life to it. Senior Dehjan Delic told me the team is "ticked off," referring to the record (3-6) though he put it a little more dramatically than that. Said it needed a convincing win.

Yaniv Simpson (knees) did not practice, Marques Alston (knee tendonitis) and Dejan Delic (knees) practiced only lightly. John Bunch did engage in a full practice.

TV 12 was at practice Wednesday doing interviews that they said will air beginning 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

Tony how do rate MU practices ? Is it true that they ran the players like a high school team and then sent them packing yesterday ? How much time do they spend on game tapes?

I can't speak for yesterday..wasn't there. But yes, they do run after practice errors of which there were a bunch today.

Having said that - including today - they spend considerable..LOTS.. of time on defense.. usually more than on offense. And then today they were heading for a tape session after their work in the gym was completed.

It has been my experience..over many years of watching MU practices (though not tape sessions at which they also spend a good deal of time)...their practices are very thorough..in my opinion.

Now..I have never been to any other college team's full practice..nor even many (any that I can remember) high school practices.

Do they (MU) run a lot? Yes. I don't think that's all that unique.

What did one expect after Monday night? Pats on the back?

Any one who has ever played at other DI men's programs, if there are any out there, can chime in on what their practices were like.

If you do.....you are obligated by me to state your name here on the blog, and for whom and when you played.

And I will check it out before running it.

I can tell you stories of losing teams which, after the game was lost, then were ordered to practice after the game. How would that go over in today's world.

I was at one of those (not under Calloway by the way). Nor is that allowed any more far as I know.

Why not ask Tyler to compare a MU practice to Villanova practice now that he is on the BB staff.I think the more we can here from X players the better the Blog becomes.I enjoy Jason imput its blanced and to the point.

tony,
It is a shame to see such problems occurring with two expected "core players" in Mike Shipman and Rickie Crews. I like the discipline that Coach Calloway employs and feel that these types of mistakes are usually only made once or twice in any successful MU player's career. Mike Shipman will learn from this experience, and he has been a good kid since his team here at MU so I'm not very worried about him. He will get into this game and make an impact I'm sure while playing with a chip on his shoulder and being kind of embarrassed. This Crews situation is troublesome to me though Tony. You are around the team often, is there really any hope for this kid? What exactly was the code of conduct that he broke? He looked like he had some flashes of talent/athletic ability on Monday, but Will he really make an impact this year? Let's Go MU tomorrow night baby!

This is the MU Mystery coach... I'm sorry but I dont know how much you've been around the team this year. Rickie Crews is not a core player or have any experience. As for Shipman, for some reason I'm not buying the reason for Jhamar's start. I think Coach Calloway wanted to change things up but decided to word it differently so no debates form. Jhamar plays well then keep him in there, if he doesnt then Ship returns because he'll be in class on time.

Don't know what Crews did. My policy on these issues is..I really don't care, and if I find out I won't use it anyway to further embarrass a kid.

Is Ricky talented? You betcha. Could he help this year? Yes. He would make rookie mistakes but they, in my opinion, would at least be countered by his athletic ability.

Ok..trust me on this.

I'm getting confused between trust me and MU mystery coach.

Right..Rickie was not thought to be a core player this year, but potentially a plus addition.

I don't buy the "Start Jhamar Conspiracy Theory," though it is fascinating.

Tony,
Rickie was the top recruit and as far as I could tell at the beginning of the year would be the 2nd big man off the bench behind Bunch. Calloway usually goes about 9 deep, so I viewed Rickie as a core player who could contribute this year. Especially after watching him at scrimmages and hearing your assessments of him and looking at his high school accolades (South NJ player of the yr.), I felt that he could be a "super sub" along with Bunch and Youngblood this year. That is how I define him as a core guy. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked out so far this year.

Ok...I can certainly go with that. Rickie was hoped to be an impact player off the bench, I felt could be a major impact.

They have this kid named Hamilton at practice every day. It's a shame he has no eligibilty left...
