WLB rules against the MAAC

By CAROL GORGA WILLIAMS

COASTAL MONMOUTH BUREAU
WEST LONG BRANCH … An application by Monmouth University to construct a $34 million
multi-purpose athletic and activities center fell one vote short to gain approval by the
Zoning Board of Adjustment Thursday night.
The vote, coming after nearly a year of hearings, was 4-3 in favor but five affirmative
votes were needed to approve the project.
The university wants to place the facility, commonly called the MAAC, next to Boylan
Gymnasium.
Voting in favor of the application were board Chairman Rocco W. Christopher, Irven Miller,
James Meola and Samuel Guidetti. Opposed were Ellen Anfuso, Douglas Bostwick and John M. Aria.
University Attorney Wendell A. Smith said he would consult with university officials before
deciding whether to appeal.

I guess the board hasn't been inside Boylan Gym lately...or hear about the "rain delay" that the women had vs. lehigh....what are they thinking....its for the kids!

One "unofficial" opinion (not mine) on all this is...MU will appeal and eventually, after more back and forth legal haggling, appeals, etc., will eventually win the appeal.

But this will all take time..maybe a year, maybe more.

Note that a superior court, after various appeals, shot down local rulings against a proposed new dorm for MU.

I shall publish the full story shortly.

Many thanks to the APP newsroom and Carol Gorga Williams for this and additional information.

This clarifies my last statement about the superior court ruling..

The vote against the MAAC comes just a week after the West Long Branch Borough Council said it would not pursue an appeal of a Superior Court decision upholding a zoning board approval that permits Monmouth University to construct a 196-bed dormitory, parking lot and tennis courts in a residential zone.

Please see my comments..suggestions, on the longer version of the story....

I, personally, am very disappointed for MU and especially its athletic teams..

The three people that voted against it had their own personal agenda, in my opinion. Four voters say "yes" and three say "no"..sounds like a town divided to me and worth it for MU to keep the pressure on as best it can.

Interestingly, Carol told me the three who objected did not even offer a reason - which apparently may have been required. Something may come of that.

In the end there is always a solution, and MU has to find it..whether it's sticking it out in WLB, or seeking an off-campus MAAC location. That would not be all that unique.

Its about time now that the powers to be at MU stand up and fight. The quote high road was a joke. The Mayor is laughing all night at MU,now every MU student should stand up and be counted. Now is the time to change the govenment of WLB.When the students rally 6000 strong they will wipe out the BS government in town.,

Its disturbing that an opposing board member living so close to MU and whose Children visit the campus frequently pretended to be unaware of the Gridiron Classicthat took place and the fabulous job the WLB POLICE did with traffic. If you want to sit on a board for WLB start being honest!!!!
