Scouting Sacred Heart, etc.

Sacred Heart scouting report and Monmouth news highlights from the MU press game notes provided as always by MU football SID Greg ("I love Brick Memorial") Viscomi:

(and later tonight or tomorrow: this week's TG game prediction. After last week I'm in no rush..still licking my wounds)

Head Coach: Sacred Heart (2-3, 1-0 NEC) is coached by third-year head coach Paul Gorham. Gorham owns a 12-13 record in his two-plus years at Sacred Heart which topped Wagner last week, 25-17.

Offense: The Pioneers rank sixth in the NEC in offense, averaging 310 yards per game this season. SHU is near the bottom on rushing offense, scoring just five touchdowns on the ground while averaging 114 ypg. Junior running back Jason Payne paces Sacred Heart on the ground with 407 yards on 59 carries with three touchdowns. Evin Jones is second on the squad in rushing with 192 yards. Senior quarterback Tyler Arciaga leads the NEC's third-best passing attack, hitting 62 percent of his passes for 982 yards with nine touchdowns compared to just four interceptions. Corey Bundy, last week's NEC Offensive Player of the Week, has been Arciaga's favorite target with 223 yards and five TDs on the year. Senior Alvin Franklin has cough a team-high 25 passes.

Defense: Sacred Heart's defense ranks sixth in the NEC, giving up 344 yards per game in 2006. The Pioneers have the league's worst pass defense, allowing
opponents to gain 1,175 yards through the air (235 ypg.). SHU's rushing defense is third in the league, allowing just 109 yards per contest on the ground. Sophomore Jeff Hodges leads the NEC in interceptions
with three.

Special Teams: The Pioneers have only attempted three field goals this season,
hitting two of them (both against Wagner). Joe Schroeder (Jackson) hit a 22 yarder against Wagner. Evin Jones returned a kick for 90 yard TD vs. Marist.

Boland's records

Despite throwing three interceptions in the loss to Stony Brook, MU signal caller Brian Boland set one single-game record and moved into first on three career passing records. Boland finished the day going 29-of-39 for 267 yards. His 29 completions set a single-game record for MU quarterbacks, surpassing his old mark of 28 which he and two other Hawk signal callers held. Boland's 517 career completions and 887 career passing attempts ranks first all-time in the 14-year history of the program. Going into the Stony Brook game Boland needed just 11 yards to surpass Dan Sabella for career passing yards at Monmouth. On the Hawks's second drive of the game, Boland hit running back Rob Lutz for an eight yard completion to set the new record.

Dan is sizing up
One of the bright spots for Monmouth in last week's game against Stony Brook was defensive tackle Dan Sizelove's effort on special teams. Sizelove (Brick) blocked two kicks, a field goal and a extra point on special teams (both blocks were incorrectly attributed to Brian Sweeney during the game). Sizelove also finished with four tackles in the game, including 1.5 for a loss.

Where is the MU sack attack?
Monmouth ranks seventh in the eight-team NEC in both sacks for and sacks against. MU has recorded just six sacks on defense this season, while giving up eight this season on offense through five games. Robert Morris offensive line is last with 12 against but the Colonials are first in the conference in sacks for with 20 through five games.

Did you know?
With his second two-touchdown performance of the season last week,
MU redshirt freshman running back David Sinisi has seven touchdowns on the season to lead the NEC. Sinisi has scored six touchdowns on the ground this season and also had a 71-yard touchdown reception on a screen pass.
