Awards day for MU football

Some of this will run in Tuesday Press

It was a day of awards Monday for the Northeast Conference champion Monmouth University football team.

Fresh off winning its fifth NEC title on Saturday, which tied it with Robert Morris for the most NEC crowns Monmouth (10-1, 6-1), was named the Sports Network's I-AA Team of the Week for the second time this season.

It also received the award following its Sept. 23 defeat of Colgate.

Three players, quarterback Brian Boland, running back David Sinisi, and defensive tackle Brian Sweeney, earned individual honors.

Monmouth continued No. 2 behind possible Gridiron Classic opponent San Diego (10-0) in the Sports Network 1-AA Mid-Major Top 10 Poll.

Monmouth also received 59 votes, the 29th highest total in the nation, in TSN Top 25 national poll.

San Diego was ranked No. 15 in TSN national poll.

The Hawks will have to wait until Sunday to find out if they are extended an at-large bid to the 2006 I-AA Playoffs.

If not they will host the first Gridiron Football Classic Dec. 2 vs. a representative of the Pioneer League, either champion San Diego or second place finisher Drake (9-2) if San Diego is invited to the 1-AA playoffs.

The NEC and Pioneer leagues are in the first of a two-year Gridiron Classic agreement.

Boland, a Brick Memorial High School graduate, takes home NEC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the third time in four weeks after completing 17-of-18 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 19-0 win over Albany.

Sweeney and Sinisi captured NEC Defensive Player of the Week and NEC Rookie of the Week awards, respectively.

Sweeney was a key in the shutout collecting a team-best nine tackles, 2.5 tackles-for-losses, and a quarterback sack.

Sinisi nabbed his fifth rookie honor this season, after posting 72 yards rushing and 35 yards receiving.

The redshirt freshman also scored his 13th touchdown of the year and has netted a touchdown in each game this season - the nation's longest current streak.

MU has to first wait and see if it gets a bid to the 1-AA playoffs...apparently it will be "under consideration" according to the NEC.

I will have a full story on this later today.
