Dave Calloway comments on Clemson game

Just talked with Dave, and these quotes and most of this stoiry will run in Sunday's Press....with many thanks from MU SID Eddie O....

The Monmouth University men's basketball team wilted under full-court pressure from
Clemson in the second half, falling 77-65 to the Tigers on Saturday at the Cox Communications
Classic in Norfolk, Va.

The Hawks (0-2) committed 17 of their 25 turnovers in the second half of a game that
featured 11 lead changes and two 12-point, first-half leads for Monmouth.

The turnovers helped spark the Tigers (2-0) to a 13-0 run, which was capped by a 3-point
basket by 6-foot-7 sophomore Julius Powell as the Tigers took a 67-57 lead with 4:19 showing.
A 3 by Dejan Delic momentarily stemmed the tide, but K.C. Rivers answered with a 3 for Clemson and the Atlantic Coast Conference team opened a 15-point lead in the final moments.

""Things were going well and then we didn't handle the pressure,'' said Monmouth coach Dave
Calloway. ""They had been pressing us the whole game and I guess we wore down.

""The disappointing thing was that it wasn't anything they changed. It was more we weren't
going to our spots we were supposed to go to, which we had been doing the whole game and
breaking the press easily.''

Monmouth led 37-36 at the half and opened a 49-42 lead with 12:58 left after layups by Jhamar Youngblood and Delic.

Monmouth started the game by rolling out to a 17-5 lead, then a 19-7 advantage after a dunk
by John Bunch with 12:33 remaining in the first half.

""We played well for about 30-35 minutes,'' said Calloway. ""But, unfortunately, the game
is 40 minutes (long).''

Delic led Monmouth with 18 points, Whitney Coleman had 17, and Marques Alston 10.

James Mayes, a 6-9 junior, led five Clemson players in double figures with 18 points.

Monmouth outrebounded Clemson 36-27, with Corey Hallett grabbing nine boards.

Monmouth will try to salvage a win in the Classic when it meets Arkansas State (0-2) at 2
p.m. Sunday at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on the campus of Old Dominion University.
