Poll questions

Since I had a technical foul up on the hoops poll question let's simplify this.

Here are the questions: (you don't have to answer thm all if you are more familar with one sport than another. But if you do, you get extra credit)!

1. Is this MU's last football game this season Saturday?
2. Score of the MU-St. John's soccer game?
3. MU men's hoop record for this season (33 games)? With leading scorer and finish in NEC regular season?

As they say in politics - Vote early and often. Hopefully, having it all on one file will be less confusing..especially to me!

1.Yes
2.2-1 SJ over MU

3.22-11; probably 14-4, Hawks leading scorer will be Alston with about 12.3 points, followed by Delic with 11, Bunch with 11,8 rebs., and 4.5 blocks to lead the nation, and guards Coleman and Shipman will hover around 10ppg plateau....NEC Champs and 13th-14th seed....

I think the balance on the men's hoops team is realistic. Other points are very plausible. Am saving my football forecast for Thursday sometime.

Tony,
Do you feel that MU will get more respect from the selection committee this year after their strong showing vs. Hampton and Villanova in last yr's tournament?

Only if they are respectable in their 12 non-conference games (wins and losses) this year..and then win at least 14 NEC games. That's why I think these non-conference games are important in the overall scheme. They need to win 4-6 of these non-conf games and also pick off a "Name" or higher level team. Old Dominion, Loyola Marymount, and or Clemson comes to mind. While USI win was big last year it was dragged down by a poor non-conf (3-8) record plus two losses each to the Mount and Robert Morris. Then they might consider last year's post season showing, in my opinion.

1. Is this MU's last football game this season Saturday?

Yes - but slowly turning toward maybe not...

2. Score of the MU-St. John's soccer game?
2-1 MU

3. MU men's hoop record for this season (33 games)? With leading scorer and finish in NEC regular season?

24 - 9
13 - 3
In this order
John Bunch
Alston
Delic
Coleman (Coleman has such a sweet shot so he could easily move up this list)

NEC Champs and win first tourney game in an upset.

Tony - if the NEC dissolves within 10 years where do you see MU heading in football/bball? I think that MU/Rutgers rivalry football game is closer than we think...

I agree Tony....I think realistically speaking, the Hawks have the core to play with every team on their schedule...Ultimately, I think MU will lose to Clemson and Houston, but I, in my heart of hearts, think MU can beat Seton Hall this year, and I think LMU and Old Dominion are winable games, given they play the matchup well and make some shots...if we all recollect March last year, if the team made some shots early, that Nova game could have been a different story...Now, Texas A&M CC is a quality team w/ good athletes and Penn is a verterna team w/ a savvy leader in Jaaber, but if MU wants to be a serious mid major team, those are games they need to either win or be highly competitive...Lastly, St. Peters, Rider, Lehigh, and Hartford are absolute must win games for Monmouth...then Stockton, well lets not even get into that.....With all this being said, playing the matchup and really getting after opponents on that end of the court is the key this year..this team is veteran-led, have some good young legs with SHip, Whit, and Jhamar...they must ride Alston and Bunch and Deki needs to make some timely shots..good be a very good year for the Hawks and finally allow the program to mark its place among credible respected mid major programs, not quite at the level of a Creighton, Witchita State, or even Penn just yet, but to gain nation-wide respect for the accomplishments over the past 5 or so years....Tony who are your top 10 favorite Monmouth players of all time?

I am not basing this on any known facts..but..in my opinion..NEC dissolves or realigns in football a lot sooner than 10 years..Maybe in a year or two...

As for RU..first MU has to go full D1-AA scholarship (63)..That maybe some years off....it could happen some day ..but i gotta think it's (game with RU) many years off...but..you never know how things shake out....

Excellent post.

Hmmmm Top 10...off the top of my head in DI...Now this will reflect ability but also personality will factor in here as well...Not going to include anyone on current rosters at this time. Their careers must be complete.

Well - Alex Blackwell, Karl Towns (anyone remember him?), Corey Albano, John Giraldo, Quinn Hayes (personable kid, I liked him a lot), Mooooostafa (of course), Dave Calloway (he made me say it..seriously though.. Dave was very pleasant and quoteable as a player), Blake Hamilton, Dwayne Byfield (great kids!), and Rahsaan Johnson (best guard I have seen at MU in D1), Kevin Owens (OK..that's 11).

Honorable mention - Mason McBride, Derric Thomas, Josh Peters (He likes to fish!).

Women (I know you didn't ask for them but here goes anyway):

Niamh Dwyer, Katie Kostohryz, Michelle Allen, Amanda Rosato, Rachel Goodale, Christie Pearce, Michelle Cappadona, Jewonda Bright, Cindy Hook, Liz Whalen.

Hon mention; Erin Winston, R. French, Nicole Cervino.

There no doubt should be more on both sides and I prob left someone out who should be Top 10 - but these names, abilities, and personalities, leap to mind.

Thank you.

Tony there were a few glaring omissions on your part...How about "Bridge" Steve Bridgemohan, Jason Krayl, and Will Lewis??? Like you said I know space is limited....
Going back also, Alex Sturm was a great guy...

is there still a chance for MU football to go to this bowl game? i feel like the story changes every week.

Listing 10 was pretty tough. Yeh.. Jason should at least be honorable mention if not higher. I hope he and anyone else not listed does not require therapy over the omissions! Since Jason now knows people in government places if I turn up missing over the next few days, check with him.

Seriously...all the kids you noted are great kids. Bridge...a great guy, his mom always called to thank us for articles about him.

Lewis was just a solid, classy young man. But who would you have left out? It's also so subjective and you asked for MY personal favorites.

Remember..I was also blending personalities, etc., into the mix.

And no one could demolish a Pizza like Sturmie.

If you want my top five in ability and impact only it's....

Blackwell, Albano, Blake, John Giraldo, and Rahsaan. I think many folks would agree on this...well maybe.

Yes (re bowl).

Either the Gridiron Classic if things work out this weekend or an at-large NCAA 1-AA playoff, though that's a long shot.

I think the Rose Bowl is out (just having some fun here!)

things working out...meaning all we have to do is win? or we have to win and SB has to lose?

Sorry about not being more specific. MU, Albany, and SBU all begin the day in a three-way tie for first place in the NEC with 5-1 NEC records. For MU to play in the Gridiron Classic..it must beat Albany and SBU must lose to CCSU. If MU and SBU tie for first place (meaning SBU beats CCSU), SBU hosts the Classic as it defeated MU head to head.

MU will go 33-0 run the tables in the NEC tourney, Bunch will dunk his way past Tyler Hansbrough and UNC and the Hawks will bring back the crown to West Long Branch, where town residents will continue to vote down the MAAC! The real winners in this all are the supportive folks from WLB, thanks guys!

If MU goes 33-0 they'll probably prohibit a parade. Too much traffic.

Oops!

Regarding favorite Hawks.

How could I leave out Chris Kenny and Tyler Azzarelli???..two of the most sincere and articulate individuals I've ever gotten to know.

I was sort of doing that list on the fly at my desk while working on other stories. So basically it becomes a slew of favorites. And as you can see I'm expanding it as we roll along.

Bottom line...I really could never cut it down to 10...unless you wanted to do it only by ability.

Here's a question. Who are your favorites? (anyone can answer).

11:27 PM, November 08, 2006
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tony, do a Top 20...that is fair right? There are certainly 20 worthy candidates...and you could break it in to teams...here's mine, based mostly on ability, with some personality involved

1st team-

John Giraldo
Rahsaan Johnson
Corey Albano
Blake Hamilton
Alex Blackwell

2nd team-
Mustapha Barksdale
Jason Krayl
William Lewis
Dave Calloway
Kevin Owens

3rd team-
Dwayne Byfield
Chris Kenny
Alex Sturm
Jack Gordon
Glen Stokes

4th team-
Tyler Azerelli
Steve Bridgemohan
Quin Hayes
Derrick Thomas
Gerry Crosby

Again, someone deserving is probably left off that list

Anyone else want to take a crack at favorites...?? let me ask this...if you had to pick ONE - your ONE favorite MU men's hoops D1 player (not including the current roster) ..who would it be and why??

I will play along as well....

1) Monmouth will play in the Gridiron Classic. SBU will lose to CCSU (CCSU's strength plays right into SBU's weakness).

2) Monmouth wins 1-0 against St. John's.

3) MU finishes (20-10, 14-4) and then wins the NEC championship, getting a 15 seed with a shot at a 14 seed.

I cannot do a top 10 because I haven't seen alot of the older guys play (only following them from 1998 and on).

Al Blackwell....best player in MU history hands down...who's yours?

It's very hard for me to select my top player since following the team from the late-80s. I would have to say that the player that would be my favorite, simply from a personality standpoint, is Harold Mobley.
