Remember Kevin Nickelberry?

He was the assistant coach for Calloway for one year and brought Alpha Bangura to MU. He then left and pursuaded Bangura and a few others (Andre Williams) to leave and it looked like Calloway might be in serious trouble.

But Nickleberry had already recruited Rahsaan Johnson who arrived the next year, Calloway brought in a JC for Bangura by the name of Gerry Crosby. Two years later MU was in the NCAAs (vs. Duke), Bangura was out of college basketball and Williams was playing for a mediocre program at Cleveland State . Wonder where they are now? I have no idea. For MU it's been all up hill from there.

Nickelberry, who went on to be an assistant at Holy Cross and Clemson (maybe one more school) where he worked the last few years, made his debut Tuesday night as coach of Hampton..yes the same Hampton MU beat in the NCAAS last year.

Host Maryland beat Hampton 102-75 Tuesday night to advance to the second round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic.

The Terrapins (1-0) on Wednesday will face Vermont, which cruised past New Orleans 82-65 in the opener of a doubleheader that drew a meager crowd of 7,148.

Hampton, the defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion, lost its first game under coach Kevin Nickelberry. The Pirates have 10 newcomers on the roster, including seven freshmen.

Hampton launched 44 3-point attempts, making only 11, and committed 40 fouls.

"I take my hat off to Gary Williams," Nickelberry said. "Maryland played great. They handled our press and got layups at the end. And some of our young guys fouled a little too much."

Nickelberry could recruit a nun into a burlesque house, but not a very loyal guy it seems.
