Question for MU football fans

First of all: Here is this week's release from PL, chock full of info:

San Diego clinched sole possession of the 2006 Pioneer Football League championship with a 56-14 victory against Dayton, Saturday. USD junior quarterback Josh Johnson threw for 316 yards and four touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Torero defense limited visiting Dayton to 201 yards total offense. It is San Diego's second-straight PFL championship, they won the last PFL Championship game last season for their first-ever title.

San Diego will face Northeast Conference champion Monmouth in the Gridiron Classic, Dec. 2 at West Long Branch, N.J.

However, in the event the regular-season champion of either conference is selected to participate in the NCAA Division I Football Championship, the two leagues agreed the second-place team from that conference will participate in the Gridiron Classic. Drake claimed sole possession of second place with a 47-28 victory at Jacksonville.

By the way..San Diego beat Drake this year 37-0.

Now, would you rather:

1. MU be invited to the 1-AA playoffs and visit the likes of UMass, New Hampshire (both of which ripped Stony Brook) etc., in an opening game.

2. San Diego (10-0) visit MU in the GC.

3. Drake (9-2), No. 2 in the Pioneer League, visit MU in the GC.

If MU wins a 1-AA playoff game it goes on to the next round. The GC is one and done..win or lose.

Tony,

I think that if Monmouth is invited to the I-AA tournament San Diego University would be invited also and the "Classic" might be Drake at Albany or Stony Brook. While the Hawks would have a very tough time in the tournament, I think being invited would represent a major growth step for the football program.

Baring that invitation, I'd like to see a San Diego / Monmouth game to decide the I-AA Mid-Major (whatever that is) championship.

1.) Playoffs!
2.) GIC vs SDU
3.) GIC vs. Drake

I'm sure a computer figures out who deserves what ranking, but I don't understand how SDU can have a better chance than Monmouth of getting into the playoffs. SDU played mostly cupcakes, whereas Monmouth beat Colgate, Albany, and CCSU (both of whom were ranked and beat quality AA powers)

Do you have a take on that Tony?

First choice is 1-AA Playoffs. That would be historic. As for which team is selected to that playoff, remember that's an independent committee selecting and not the same committee currently selecting the sports network poll. Monmouth stands a better shot that SDU at getting an invite. By all accounts Monmouth stands a better chance of getting selected based on that committee’s rules for selection. Here’s some info on how those selections are made.

Sixteen playoff teams will be announced on Nov. 19 (1 pm EST), of which eight will be automatic qualifiers (the champions of the Atlantic 10, Big Sky, Gateway, MEAC, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern and Southland conferences) and eight will be chosen as at-large entries by the Division I-AA Football Committee, with assistance from four regional advisory committees. The I-AA committee will also seed the top four teams. The committee will be asked to judge at-large teams on the following points - which come straight out of the NCAA manual:

1. The committee shall select the best teams available on a national at-large basis to complete the bracket;

2. There is no limit to the number of teams the committee may select from one conference;

3. The won-lost record of a team will be scrutinized to determine a team’s strength of schedule;
however, less than seven Division I wins will place a team in jeopardy of not being selected;

4. The committee may give more consideration to those teams that have played all Division I opponents;

And 5. If the team of a committee member is under consideration, the member may not vote for the team being considered and will not be in the room when a vote is taken.
