Monday's MU Men's APP Hoops Story
Sorry..meant to post this earlier.....
Dave Calloway, Monmouth University men's basketball coach, was rooting for
two teams Sunday.
Obviously he was pulling for his Hawks, but also for his beloved
Philadelphia Eagles.
""One won a little easier today than the other,''said Calloway after
Monmouth (1-2) outlasted Arkanas State in overtime, 69-67, in the Cox Communications
Classic at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. Philadelphia rolled
past Washington.
Monmouth sophomore guard Mike Shipman, a 69 percent foul shooter last season, sent
Sunday's game into overtime when he sank two free throws with 1.6 seconds remaining
and Dejan Delic snapped a 67-67 deadlock with a driving layuup with 15
seconds left in overtime to sink the Indians (0-3) at the Ted Constant
Convocation Center.
It had been a rough two games for Shipman Friday and Saturday vs. Old
Dominion and Clemson (four assists, 11 turnovers) but Sunday the point guard
scored 12 points with six assists and one turnover.
""I told him in the (hotel) lobby after the Clemson game he probably won't
see pressure like that, hopefully the rest of his career,''said Calloway.
""Or at least until the NCAA Tournament and that he had to get
better right away. And he did, he played great all-around.""
No lead Sunday was larger
than six points as Monmouth claimed its first victory in three attempts
over a team from the Sun Belt Conference.
""This win was very, very important,''said Calloway after the Hawks
survived a contest marked by seven ties and 16 lead changes.
""We coudn't be tired,''said Calloway. ""We couldn't make excuses, we had
to find a way to win the game. It wasn't pretty but we found a way.''
Senior Marques Alston scored five points in overtime
including a pair of
game-tying baskets.
He tied the game at 65 with a 3 with 1:45 left and then again at 67 with a
jump shot with 45 seconds remaining after a rebound by John Bunch kept the
possession alive.
""Marques is Mr. Clutch for us, and tonight we had a host of players step
up,'' Calloway said.
Monmouth trailed by three points in regulation when Shipman brought the Hawks
within 59-58 with a layup with 25 seconds showing.
Adrian Banks, who scored 24 points for Arkansas State, hit
the first of two from
the line but missed the second with 17.6 seconds left leaving the
deficit at two points.
Whitney Coleman had 13 of his 16 points in the scond half for Monmouth, Alston scored 16, and Delic 10.
Corey Hallett added five points, seven rebounds and two blocks,
while the 7-2 Bunch scored eight
points and blocked five shots.

Hey grahmman did anyone make the all-tournament team down at ODU for the Hawks?
The Cox Communications Classic All-Tournament Team

G - Cliff Hammonds (Clemson)
G - Drew Williamson (Old Dominion)
F - Valdas Vasylius (Old Dominion)
MVP
F - James Mays (Clemson)
Clemson beat ODU Sunday, 74-70
good for whitney...he needs to be that consistent third double figure scorer for the hawks this year to compliment delic and marcus
Tony,
From what I've seen of the boxscores from MU's 3 games down at Old Dominion there's still been no sighting of Ricky Crews. I thought he was supposed to be our #1 recruit. Already in the doghouse?
I know it's very early, BUT this situation is already getting eerliy reminiscent of things that happen regularly at MU. The last 2 years it was Tyson Johnson. Just before that, Brent Stephens. Both guys with obvious talent who never got on the court here. I can almost read the tealeaves -- Crews transfers at the end of his freshman year.
If so, Calloway's big recruiting class comes down to ONE player -- Youngblood! That's not good enough to fuel the program. The others have already fallen into Monmouth purgatory -- Redshirt central!
How has that worked so far for Shawn Barlow?
By the way, is Yaniv Simpson still hurting (or just another forgotten sitting on the pines)? Seems like a guy with his supposed shooting prowess would have gotten a few minutes following MU's 1-18 opening day 3 pt. debacle.
I'm not claiming any of these guys would have altered any of the 3 results in the tournament -- it's just a comment on the disappointments we have with our recruits on a steady basis.
Ok...First of all...I think we all have to get over Brent Stephens and Tyson Johnson.
Had Brent stayed ,last year would have been his senior year. Guess they did Ok without him, though I'm not saying he wouldn't have contributed. Left on his own.
Tyson...sure he would have helped this year. It didn't work out. Sometimes we forget MU isn't the only school where kids leave due to grades or other reasons.
Rickie Crews: far as I know he's not in any dog house but Calloway apparently felt, through this last weekend, he wasn't ready to play.
Now..myself...I might have given him or Barlow a few minutes just to provide others a rest. All three games were tight in the second half, guess Calloway did not want to risk it.
Simpson.. was hurt ..did not make the trip. When I talked to him last week at practice he said he hoped to return to practice this week. He will play this year (if he ever gets healthy!) and, in my opinion, will contribute.
Crews has ability, no question, but I think has struggled somewhat with the offense and defense.
Me? I'd start getting him in there for a few minutes.
Barlow...I'd like to see him start getting a few minutes myself, too. He's a big body.
Coaches know their players better than I do (gads, I hate to admit that!)
If kids aren't playing there have to be reasons.
Hey..I liked big Troy Hamlett..remember him? Not as a regular by any means but as a guy they could have played for a few minutes in some games.
I will be going over to practice on Wednesday and will have a better handle on those (Rickie and Yaniv) situations.
Don't know where you live or job status ..but remember.. practices are open..you can go and see for yourself. They practice Tuesday and Wednesday 3:30 p.m. at Boylan and leave Thursday for Houston.
Dobriansky and Gaitley..I have noooo problem with them being red-shirted this year. This is definitely the right move for them and MU.
Maybe either would have contributed a tad this year, but not much..a few minutes here and there... and then they lose a whole year of eligibility. MU will need them next year for sure.
I projected 1-2 on this trip and that's how it worked out. I also project two more losses this weekend..Texas CC..has a dynmamic seven-footer.
Maybe MU can steal one. Who knows?
Actually..Stephens (I can't escape this kid!) would be a senior this year. In my opinion he would be contributing off the bench. But, he wanted to leave.
I was down at the Classic this weekend to see the Hawks....I expected a 1-2 weekend as well...but MU could have easily gone 2-1 for the tournament. The ODU game all of MU shooters just couldn't connected and nights are going to happen like that. The Clemson game was eerily similar to last year's South Carolina game in Alaska...very very questionable rotations in the second half by Calloway. Hallet's athleticism (yes i know its tough to say) is much more effective than Bunch's. Bunch totally slowed down the Hawks offensive and defensive efforts against the press of Clemson. Same thing happened on Sunday, questionable rotations but the Hawks were able to squeak one out....Very impressed by Hallet for the weekend, seems to be taking the senior leadership role....very impressive.
I don't think there's a person on this planet who doesn't like Corey Hallett. Always energetic and passionate.
This is his fifth year of college ball (sat out one year at MU after transferring) so, hopefully for him and MU he will make this a very productive season.
Not too many (any?) teams in the NEC will have a center rotation able to deal with Monmouth's.
As for Bunch...safe to say he's not a "transition specialist" but from what I have seen in practice he can run the floor fairly well for a big man, a very big man.
MU needs him out there for his size and presence. In breaking the press, basically all he has to do is catch the ball and get rid of it.
On offense I like the fact that, at least in half court, he slows the tempo as MU looks to set him up down low.
In three games against good competition he has 16 rebounds and 12 blocks and his scoring will pick up some, especially in the NEC.
MU is still most effective, in my opinion, when it plays games in the 60's.
I agree Big John does slow them down and Cory looks and plays alot better when with the other four starters. Also observed that Ship seems to run the flow of the game a little better than the freshman who reminds me of John Starks a little erractic and always looking to shoot first. (chalk it up to being a freshman)Still looking for MU to go back to NCAA!
The freshman - Jhamar " The Jet" Youngblood - going to be a VERY good player. Could be trying to do a little too much right now.
Gotta actually go to work now plus other obligations. Be back later. Great to hear from everyone! Keep those cards and letters coming...
First of all, Corey and Bunch are two very different players, and can be equally effective in their own ways...people hating on John Bunch should realize he single handedly won MU some games down the stretch last year, and for the record I am no huge John Bunch fan nor apologist...Secondly, Tony why is it you feel Jhamar "the jet" is going to be great? You have seen him in three games, and yes he's a freshman, but was he "great" yet? No. He's got some potential, but we'll have to wait and see....Now all those killing Calloway for redshirting these two big kids, I have news, neither would have sniffed the court this year...They can be decent players, but need some development. And if you're going to make a post about a player (Simpson) at least no he wasnt even on the trip...Lastly, Rickie Crews needs major work, and it has zero to do with basketball. I will leave it at that.
1. On Corey and Bunch. I agree. I don't see how people can knock Bunch. He is still a work in progress and his best years may well be after college.
But, for now, is he a potential difference maker every time sets foot on the court, especially on defense and especially in the NEC? You think??
2. On "the Jet". I stand by my statements that has a chance to be VERY good.
Is he there yet? No, of course not. But I like his talent, hustle, and attitude. I am told he is very coachable.
3. On the red shirts: I agree.
4. I know Simpson did not make the trip. I do not beleive I said he did or indicated he did. If somehow I miss led anyone than it was my error. I know I said he hoped to return to practice this week and I do feel he can be a factor this year.
As for ""Rickie the Rookie." ..I was told he made the trip and Dave elected not to play him. I don't think it's fair to insinuate anything else.
As I have said. I will be at practice Wednesday. I will ask about Rickie, Shawn, and anything else anyone would like me to inquire about.
Tony,
That was not a refernce to you about Yaniv Simpson, but another blogger who wasnt even aware he hadnt made the trip...As for Jhamar, time will tell, and Rickie Crews from what I am hearing is really struggling academically and socially...
This from a blogger whose comment I could only partially run...

To Anonymous....In good conscience I cannot run your final statement here. There is nothing wrong with it all but, can't do it.
If you wish to further discuss it, just e-mail me and I will explain my thinking. No problem.
...thanks..

Tony,
I was the one who commented to you the other day asking if Simpson was still hurting, and if not, why didn't he play down at ODU? That's all I wanted to know about his status because it was a very valid question.
I seem to be taking some heat from people for 'not even knowing he didn't make the trip'. Unfortunately, I (like 99% of MU fans) don't live on campus and, with no mention of this anywhere, had any inkling of this. Before trying to ridicule someone when there is a public lack of info, those responding should realize we don't all have the 'inside info' the dorm people do.
