Question for those who attended the Cox Classic

How would you rate the three MU opponents compared to good NEC teams of present or recent years.?

Especially to current RMU, or FDU of last year?

Yes, I guess Clemson would win the NEC! What about ODU and Ark State?
How would they stack up?

Would they match up with the 27-5 CCSU team of 2001-2002? That team came from 20 plus points back at MU to win in overtime, 63-62..This was some club? Anyone recall it?

34 Edwards, Corsley.... 32-31 31.0 .504 .000 .761 8.7 1.0 44 48 15.4
05 Battles, Damian..... 32-31 34.8 .407 .401 .811 3.5 3.5 41 9 14.2
22 Scott, Ricardo...... 31-27 29.2 .437 .345 .699 4.9 1.6 30 5 12.7
15 Robinson, Ron....... 32-31 32.0 .489 .000 .765 9.3 2.0 43 19 10.4
03 Alexander, John..... 31-28 32.5 .494 .294 .815 2.1 3.5 24 1 7.7

It's a mystery. Where did MU mystery coach go?

Tony I would say that both teams would compare favorably to that CCSU team...Clemson will win about 20 games in the ACC, and ODU will win around 18-19 in the rising CAA...

Wow.

I thought that CCSU team was one of the best ever in the NEC.

I agree, but the ACC is the ACC, and clemson was 7-9 in it last year, and seems to be much better....ODU again, maybe would be a good matchup with that CCSU team, but the Blue Devils may have been able to take advantage of this ODU team up front...Last years ODU team is another story...that Loughton was an excellent player

TG, I would disagree with the previous poster....I never really got to see that Central team so I won't compare them....Clemson did not really impress me that much, if MU had any ability to handle a press that game is different....ODU is talented, great rebounding team...should be pretty good in the CAA......Ark. State reminded me a lot of Hampton to be honest, Hawks should have blown them out

Tony,
Sorry I've been bogged down with work since coming back from VA.
Clemson: A very athletic team with a great point guard in Senior Vernon Hamilton. Also, strong 2nd and 3rd guards in Cliff Hammonds and KC Rivers. Their young PF Trevor Booker is a freak athlete and would dominate the NEC by his soph. year. Their C Mays killed MU and is an athletic 6'9 leaper at center. Their SF's are avg. with Perry, an aggressive role player the best of the bunch. Clemson could have another good yr. this year. They would undoubtedly be the favorite to win the NEC, however MU's contrasting style would give them problems in a big game.
ODU: They have a great team chemistry about them. It starts with their SR pg Drew Williamson, who was the best player during the weekend in my eyes. Brandon Johnson and Lidonde are their other role playing guards who do a nice job alongside Drew. Brian Henderson is an athletic 3 with a nice outside shot. Dahi and Vasylius are hard working talented players at the forward spots. Big Sam Harris would be effective based on his 7'3 size in the NEC. They would be a favorite to win the NEC alogn with MU/RMU.
Ark. St.: They were missing their star guard Jim Jones due to suspension. However, they have a great player in Isaac Wells a 6'8 lefty PF who is strong, athletic and has range on his jumper. Freshman Wedel was their PG and did a nice job running the show. Adrian Banks is a 6'3 JR who killed opposing teams from the 3 pt. stripe all weekend long. This team is not great, however with Jones back they could make a run in their conference. They would probably be (with Jones) right around 3rd to 4th best team in the NEC.
-MU Mystery Coach
PS: I saw Houston scored 102 pts and won in OT yesterday. Saturday should be an interesting game to listen to...

"MU's contrasting style would give them problems in a big game."

why is everyone so afraid to criticize dave calloway? Is it because monmouth athletics is run by the same old people with the same old PR? If you look back over the past few years when monmouth plays a tough game against a good(higher ranking)opponent, they always seem to be there until that 20-0 run. They always give up that 20-0 run.

Perhaps their coach is just another former player living the dream? He has indeed won some good games, but I will argue monmouth's talent pool is always one of the best in the NEC (whether calloway recruited them or not). Its simply a nicer campus and location than *most other NEC schools.

As an alum, im just sick of people always patting calloway on the back and never criticizing him for his mistakes. I remember a game versus St Francis NY some years back towards the end of the season where the game was neck and neck and monmouth finished the game with a loss and 3 Timeouts!!!

Come everyone, tell me how great he is, i just cant wait. By the way Tony, how many 3 pointers have the hawks attempted so far this year?

Now....tell me how you really feel about Dave?

MU is shooting a lusty 16-for-61 from 3 so far this year as these stats will show.. Whitney 6-for-9 and Deki 5-for-20 (ouch!) and so forth..

.SCORING GP FG-FGA FG% 3FG-FGA 3PT% FT-FTA FT% PTS PTS/G
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
COLEMAN, Whitney.... 3 14-28 .500 6-9 .667 3-4 .750 37 12.3
DELIC, Dejan........ 3 12-35 .343 5-20 .250 6-11 .545 35 11.7
ALSTON, Marques..... 3 14-25 .560 3-8 .375 4-4 1.000 35 11.7
SHIPMAN, Mike....... 3 8-21 .381 0-10 .000 8-9 .889 24 8.0
YOUNGBLOOD, Jhamar.. 3 7-17 .412 0-3 .000 2-4 .500 16 5.3
BUNCH, John......... 3 6-18 .333 0-0 .000 2-6 .333 14 4.7
HALLETT, Corey...... 3 4-12 .333 1-6 .167 1-1 1.000 10 3.3
NUNNER, Alex........ 3 1-6 .167 1-5 .200 0-0 .000 3 1.0
Total............... 3 66-162 .407 16-61 .262 26-39 .667 174 58.0
Opponents........... 3 71-164 .433 20-51 .392 36-57 .632 198 66.0

Coleman.. who is the shooting guard should be shooting more 3s..but..to his credit..he doesn't go wild..just takes them when he has the opportunity...Deki probably shoots them too much..but that's his game..and he can go on streaks...Nunner is supposed to be a better 3-point marksman than he has shown so far this year...Shipman, you have to hope, is better than 0-for-10...In my opinion MU's best 3-point shooters for percentage are probably Whitney and Marques..I think Deki still "settles"for too many 3's when he would be better served making an extra pass or using his size to go to the glass. But when he's open he should pull the trigger most of the time. That's who he is.

I think this team will be better from 3 than it has shown so far (it has to be doesn't it?) If it's not it will have to be more judicious with its 3-point shot selection or that will be a problem.

It will be interesting to see if Simpson makes an impact in this area (one of these days!)

Anyway....to pick out one game X number of years ago to use as an anti-Dave example is sort of silly if you ask me....

Hey, he's not perfect.. he makes mistakes in games and in recruiting..BUT..all coaches obviously do..

The trick is to make more right decisions in the games and in recruiting than your competitors..

I think his record speaks for itself.

I know you and MU fans would like to see MU defeat a Clemson or a Boston College (Vermont beat BC last night though BC's center was out).

Aside from Princeton, which though a national program cannot be considered "big time" right now . .MU hasn't bumped off a"name team" since Vanderbilt some years back but does have a history of some major upsets over the years...

One has to realize..NEC teams are ....for the most part..recruiting players to win the NEC..

The "big time" teams (including RU and Seton Hall) are supposed to be recruiting players to win a national championship...

Some smaller programs in recent years..Vermont, Bucknell, etc. to name a few, have made a name for themselves with headline wins.

I believe MU is striving for this ...but it's far from an every day happening for teams of the NEC ilk.

It's not like MU is the only NEC-type program to get hit with a 20-0 run when facing the "big timers."

Ok after reading the post by the "disgruntled" poster, I came to a few conclusions...

1. He's an ex-Hawk who was "wrongfully scorned" by the Hawks coaching staff

2. An FDU season ticket holder

3. A walk-on who did not make the final cut....

Cmon, Dave Calloway is young and still learning, and no he is not perfect, especially in game sometimes, but give the guy some credit, and who are these same old people running MU athletics you refer to...There are a few other major errors with this poster's comments...

1.Ok MU nicer campus than other NEC schools? Thats why recruits go to Monmouth? Well Robert Morris in sexy Moon Township, PA is not the most desireable locale, and FDU in HAckensack, well enough said...those two programs are two of the winningest NEC programs, and Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart, both nice campuses with a total of how many NEC rings in hoops?

2.Who here is saying that Calloway is great? He's a good guy, who was a very good player for MU, and has done a nice job "helping" to rebuild the program from the end of the Szoke era. Plus most insiders know that Coach Krayl does a majority of the coaching. Dave has gotten much better as a coach both in game and preparing his team.

I am not trying to be critical of that poster, but I'd like to know his rationale for some of his assertions...Thank you Tony.

Glad to have MU Mystery coach back on the job.

But how dare he take time off from MU hoops to actually work at his own job.

Priorities, please!

I have to agree with one point,Dave and staff dont know how to call time outs,at ODU when all three teams made runs NO NOT one good time out was called, comon Chris call one for the guys,at Texas CC it was a joke 8-0 run nothing no help from the bench coaches.

Can't help you. Wasn't there. From my experience Dave is usually pretty good at when to be calling time outs.
