The MAAC moves closer to reality

I was told today by MU Associate AD Jeff Stapleton that the WLB Zoning Board "memorialized" the MAAC at a meeting Thursday night - translation - made it official.

Now there is a 45-day period, probably beginning at some point next week, when a person or persons can appeal this decision - translation - take the matter to court.

After the 45 days, MU is free to begin construction but cannot do so until the 45 days have elapsed.

MU is hoping for groundbreaking in July. Under this timetable and without any setbacks the MAAC maybe could be ready for action perhaps as early as midway though the 2008-2009 basketball season, but certainly beginning with the 2009-2010 season.

Good News... Although since you can build a facility like this only once every 60 years or so, it's sad to see they are building what is basically just a basketball arena and not what they should be building which is a basketball arena/recreation center... There are no racquetball courts, no dance studios and large activity rooms, no climbing walls and no new offices... And although there will be some expansion of the fitness center, it is far from what is needed for the athletics department... Basically the combination of an inept fund-raising department on the University level and a town that doesn't embrace the University will leave Monmouth with a concrete box with seats that they'll only be allowed to actually fill a handful of times a year.

No climbing walls??

Darn... can't be D I without one I guess...

Below is from a Press story in Jan. on what the MAC will include -

"the arena
which would house basketball games, an indoor running track, the university bookstore,
athletic department offices, Varsity Club, classrooms and a fitness center. (The fitness
center would be available to the public on a membership basis.)

Let's see if any of those liars from WLB now have the nerve to test their phony claims in court -- where it will cost them to do so!

Don't you just love people who post things that they truly have no idea about. Not sure why or how he thinks that the Advancement office (inept fund-raising dept) is not doing their job. There was a goal to raise $40 million they surpassed that goal and raised $45 million. The goal as since been moved up to $50 and they are almost there. Not sure I would really call that inept. Since the university is only building a concrete box, we should make sure that the door is locked when you come knocking. FDU has racquetball courts in their gym, I can tell you from personal experience that the go unused daily and are a waste of space. When you are building an arena that keeps getting pushed to be smaller, I don't think racquetball courts or dance studios are a top priority. And I'm not even sure what we would do with a climbing wall. There are enough problems getting the kids to come and watch a game and sit in the stands, let alone come and climb a wall.
