MU men vs. FDU predictions/and do you plan to attend or watch on TV?

I'll add more on FDU later Sunday or Monday..but we may as well get this topic rolling..!!..
.

I just added this:

Note: MU has beaten only two teams with winning records - Rider (12-10) and RMU (14-7) and is 1-3-2 (RMU is 6-6, Wagner is 5-5 NEC) vs. NEC teams with winning records..I know..I'm being "negative" again!!

but as Police Detective (or Sgt. - I forget which) Joe Friday said (anyone know who I'm talking about?) - "Just the facts, just the facts".

Of their final eight NEC games...five games (FDU twice , CCSU, SHU, MSM)) are vs. teams with winning NEC records and four vs. NEC teams (FDU - twice, CCSU, SHU) with winning records overall....

Soooo...we'll see now for certain whether MU can crack back into the upper strata of the NEC...

A longer version of the Press story of the SFNY game ran on the blog on the posted version here last night.

I mention this for folks to note that - due to space limitations - stories are sometimes cut in the paper - but the entire versions should always make it onto the blog...in case you are interested.

Am heading over to MU now for today's noon practice..story and practice report will run later this afternoon..

Tony had asked me to add a few thoughts on the MU-FDU rivalry, and some of my experiences in it, so per request here are my thoughts:

*First off, for the record, I HATE FDU, always have and always will. Let me try to explain this better. If I have a kid some day who is good enough to play college basketball, and it comes down to getting a scholarship and playing at FDU, or going D-2, he will be going D-2, not FDU!* Ok, with that said, I have some very bad, and ver good memories of the FDU rivalry including:

1. FDU ending the career of Dave Calloway when I was just a young kid and a ballboy for the Hawks.

2. FDU ending our season my junior year in the first round of the NEC tournament.

3. Beating a talented FDU in the NEC tourney my freshman year at the Sovereign Bank Arena.

4. Scoring my 1000th career point at home versus FDU.

5. Chris Kenny over Crosariol, enough said!

*Tomorrow night should be a very very intense and close battle. It will not even be a game, it will be a battle, a war even. If you dont think the holdovers and the coaching staff want MU in the worst way, then you are mistaken. Tom Green and his crew basically handed over an automatic bid to the Hawks last season, and I am certain that they would like to not only embarass the Hawks, but perhaps even punish the, physically and mentally.

With both teams jockeying for mid-level and higher position for the NEC tourney, you can bet that this one is going to be exciting. The X-Factor once again for MU is John "Triple Double" Bunch. FDU's posts, while talented, are undersized, and if the big fella can wheel and deal inside he can frustrate the Knights. IF MU can somehow jump out to an early lead on FDU, I think you could see the Knights pack it in. I see them as a very feast or famine sort of team, but when they are on, watch out, they can drain threes from all over. Murray, Tyler, Harris, Peoples, Freehold Twp. star Ubilla, and yes even Eric Hazzard can all drain the long ball. Mu will have to contain the FDU guards, specifically Ubilla, who has been scorching teams of late. Peoples and especially Harris will get their buckets, but if MU can win the battle in the back court, you could see MU be successful. I think we see another classic nail biter type game, that may need a hero to produce a big shot, maybe in the form of.....Marques "Big Money" Alston? I am still waiting to see him break out.

Prediction:

MU 71
FDU 66

Sorry Tom Green! I was going to pass on this one and watch from the couch, but I am now leaning towards trekking up the Parkway to beautiful sunny Teaneck for this one.

By the way I hate FDU! Go Hawks.

*Oh man I forgot to even mention Gadi Buch, what a dirty player. It was painful as he hit corner three after corner three to knock us out my junior season, watching him taunting our bench as he ran by.*

Hope that suffices Tony.

Jason, now tell us how you REALLY feel about FDU.

I could not agree any more with these sentiments. I too hate FD-Who and I will be there tonight hollering and cheering on the MU miracle hawks. Can you dig it?

Jay, I remember all those vividly. I think the only other games that can contribute would be the win at the Boylan in 87-88 that put us on the map as a powerhouse, and the QF match-up in 94-95 with the player fight in the locker room halls at the half and subsequent loss.

Tony, wasnt Jason recruited by FDU? I recall hearing that way back when. I know his final schools were Princeton New Hampshire and MU, and he chose MU, but I recall FDU being mentioned? Any truth to that?
For the record I hate FDU as well.

Jason has never mentiond being to me being recruited by FDU ( I don't think they would have had a shot - do you?) ...didn't mention it when we talked Sunday...I'll ask him next time I see him or..he may see it here and answer...or - heck..I'll ask coach Krayl ..

I heard Iona tried to get involved with Jason late.....

I think for the "long time" MU fans - and this also relates to our blog topic question along these lines - FDU oe even still Rider have been or are the primary rivals..more recently perhaps CCSU ..can't think of anyone else many MU fans would be that passionate about....often depends on a particular season..

I dont know if Jason was recruited by FDU, but I do know Vincent Rosario of CM chose FDU over MU this year.

I posted that (Rosario of Cardinal Mc Carrick choosing FDU over MU) the other day and sarcastically was called a 'genius' by some clown who said Rosario STUNK, and it was MU who passed on him, not the other way around -- don't know what the truth on that is.

Rosario is having a nice season, but scored just 5 points the other day against a weak weak East Brunswick team. MU dropped off him after a less than stellar summer, and took a more system-type player, James Hett, to supplement Youngbloods, Ship, and Coleman.

Tony,
Who else is MU currently recruiting at this time?

They had a kid - Holland - from St. Benedict's they were looking at...I know they are looking at other hs players and are now getting in the JUCO mix...

I don't have any other specific names at this point....

They are - definitely - targeting front court players..

I will be unable to make it to Teaneck tonight, but will be watching at a gathering of some MU Alums/Fans and watching with them. I will say I am cautiously optimistic with this one and extremely excited. FDU has some weapons in Harris/Peeples/Ubilla?Tyler/Murray on offense. Their other big man, Jordan Ingram isn't very tall or strong. MU needs to continue doing what has worked. Establish tempo and a low post presence, play tenacious defense, ride their seniors and get solid guard play. A tough pick indeed, but with my heart I will go:
MU-69
FDU-65

FDU is a fascinating team in this aspect..in their last 12 games bginning with a 74-72 loss Dec. 22 at home vs. Rider no FDU game has been decided by more than seven points and that was vs. SFPA ..Knights have been up and down but have won their last two both on the road at Sac Heart and RMU ....

This is a game vs. two teams that seem to be getting their act together ...

MU appears to be stronger hitting the road for this game than the last road trip in that Shipman is back, and Bunch has posted two very good good games in a row ...
though Bunch was coming off that 23 point, 12 rebound game vs. MSM before the last road trip and we know what happened ..

I sort of lean towards MU wins this game...

but since my Hawk instincts have been crashing into windows this season...

FDU, 72-68.

Check out the halftime score tonight..

When opponent scores 30 or more points in the first half this year MU is 2-10 though it won its last two (at home RMU, SFNY).

...opponent scores under 30
MU is 8-2...

I've seen a few references to this kid Holland from St. Benedict's who MU is looking at. Is this the GOOD St. Benedict's -- from Newark? Because if it is, how good is this guy? He doesn't play -- I haven't seen his name in a boxscore yet!

You know...I haven't seen this kid's name..at least not lately..thought I saw it earlier this season...good point though - I will check...
