For Monsignor Farrell, it's one down, one to go.

Entering the week, the Lions needed two wins -- one last night against St. Joseph by-the-Sea and one tomorrow night in the regular-season finale against Moore Catholic -- to clinch the Island CHSAA title and the accompanying Class AA playoff berth.

Last night, the Oakwood squad took step one with an 86-56 runaway over the visiting Vikings.

"We're playing hard," said Lions coach Bob Besignano, whose team was tested early, but had a 22-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 49-23 edge by halftime. "We've had some games where we were able to jump out to a lead and maintain it.

"Even in the loss to St. Peter's, we got out real quick, only by the end of the first half we gave it all back," said the coach. "But that's in the past. Obviously, you learn each game. We know, with the teams that we play (on the Island), that anybody is capable of winning on any night."

Yesterday, the Lions made sure there was no upset, led by a 28-point, 11-rebound, seven-block performance from Ryan Rossiter. Billy Falkenhainer contributed 14 points and seven rebounds and James Hett had 13 points and nine assists. And all three sat out the fourth quarter.

"We knew we had to come in and win this game," said Hett. "One of our goals at the beginning of the year was to win the Catholic League, and, now, Friday (when they host Moore) is our shot."
