Re: 1-AA football at-large bid poll

What do you think?

1. Does MU get a bid?

2. Does San Diego get a bid and not MU?

3. Do neither get a bid?

4. Do both get bids?

5. Does Manasquan get a bid (just kidding!)

Tony,

More info from the sportsnetwork in today's edition;

http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=/cfoot2/news/AGN4049414.htm

Here’s more info on the selection process;

“While we’ve examined the specific criteria for the playoff selection committee for the past two weeks, take a look at some of the other factors in the selection process.

Schedule strength: The committee will assess the overall strength of schedule, and expect who you play and who you beat to have a very significant role in the at-large playoff selections. The committee will scrutinize who is making up the wins and losses on a schedule as well as the quality of conference.

Region doesn’t matter: The best eight at-large teams will be taken regardless of what I-AA region and conference they play in.

More subjective than objective: While individual committee members can look at factors like polls and computer rankings ahead of time and have an awareness of the rankings, those indicators are not used in the final criteria for playoff selections by the committee.

Good wins/Bad losses: The committee will look at the quality of the wins and the quality of losses, so things like I-A wins and DII losses can play significant factors.

Playing an all Division I schedule is huge: Wins against non-Division I opponents are generally just set aside, so teams that play more than one lower- level team could be in jeopardy. Four-loss teams are in play: Idaho, in 1995, was the last team to earn an at-large spot with four losses, but there could be a number of four-loss teams that receive consideration with some teams playing multiple I-A games and boosting their strength of schedule.

Momentum helps: The entire body of work will be taken into consideration, but a strong finish can give a team a boost.

Head-to-Head helps, too: Lafayette’s victory over Richmond aided its postseason selection a year ago, and a win over a playoff-bound team can be important for an at-large hopeful.”

And here's their prognosis for Monmouth and San Diego State;

26. Monmouth (10-1, 5-1 NEC)

REGULAR SEASON COMPLETE

Outlook: The Hawks are going to need help to get ahead of other at-large contenders, but a 10-1 record against an all Division I schedule keeps them in the playoff conversation.

27. San Diego (10-0, 7-0 PFL)

PRE-PLAYOFF SCHEDULE COMPLETE

Outlook: Finishing as the only undefeated team in I-AA, winning convincingly and earning a high spot in the polls will help San Diego’s playoff case, but two games against non-Division I teams mean they probably need a ton of help to have any chance at the postseason.

Re : TSN. Very, very informative. I think MU needs help via a number of those teams we have mentioned to lose to make it..but at least they are being talked about for the first time in their football history.

And if they don't get in than it appears San Diego comes to MU which should make for a headline attraction.

Re: Boland. Can't be certain. We've done an awful lot on him ..but he does have just about every school QB record in captivity..let's see how this plays out (the post season)...

Tony,

Personally, I'm hoping MU doesn't get a bid. I'd rather have them play the Patriot league team (whoever) at home and win it, even though this might be considered the lesser of the 2 possible scenarios.

Look at the puclicity the men's basketball team got last year by being lowered into the play-in game against Hampton, wiping them out on national TV, before advancing.

It's the Pioneer League, but I get your drift.

In this instance..it's probably better for MU to go the 1-AA playoffs..so they have their foot in the 1-AA playoff door for the first time.

But the game with San Diego - at home - would be worthwhile as well. Remember, there is no further advancement for the winner.

Tony,

One of the reasons why the folks on the anygivensaturday.com board are so nice to Monmouth is their all sick of SDU’s bragging all season long. Talk about a propaganda machine, SDU’s loaded! Over the last two months they’ve flooded that board! And everyone’s grown tired in light of their weak schedule.

Please don't dismiss our hard-earned victory against Dixie State. If you look below, you can see that Dixie State already beat Monmouth 44-7 - so why waste a game on them in the Gridiron Classic?!? Behind my coaching expertise, propaganda, and the arm of Heisman Trophy finalist Josh Johnson we will beat them 156 - 3 .

Some of you may say, "Coach Harbaugh, isn't Dixie State a Division II school and didn't they go 1-9?" That maybe true, but I've seen the tape. Dixie State could make chum of Navy, burgers out of Texas, and Chicken Cordon Bleu out of Delaware and Arkansas together.

In respect to playoffs, hopefully the committee can see fit to give us home-field advantage through the playoffs. If we don't, I swear that if I don't go to Iowa State, I will come back next year with a vengeance and we will call trick-plays and air it out into even the last seconds of the game to make our stats even more impressive. Asuzu Pacific - we will destroy you by over 100 points next year !!! The Brawl on the Beach will be SO lopsided!!!!!

Yeah, "Coach Harbaugh" really knows about the Monmouth Hawks. Dixie State played Monmouth alright... Monmouth (OR), who beat Dixie State 44 - 7. When "Coach" realizes that he is looking at the wrong Monmouth team, he's going to have nightmares.

assuming MU hosts gridiron classic, will temp bleachers or other accomodations be made to handle crowd?

I allowed the "Harbough" comment......even though it as obviously a spoof!

Hmmm...Maybe MU NJ should play Monmouth, Ore...and we'll make it a round robin with Monmouth, Ill.

Re: temp bleachers. I'll ask Sunday. IF they are in the game. How much of a crowd do you think they get? Hard for me to get a pulse though there would certainly be considerable interest, esp. if they are playing San Diego and there would be a two-week build up for the game.

There's also probably some high school playff games that day.

That's championship weekend for high schools. Some games are that Friday night (I think St. Peter's/Bosco is, if it comes down to those 2 in Non-Public Group 4), but many of the shore teams will probably be on Saturday. BTW, I say MU hosts USD in the Gridiron Classic. I give MU about a 10% chance to get a bid.

It probably comes down to how many of those other "bubble" teams lose.

My guess is......MU plays San Diego.
