WEST LONG BRANCH - Marisa Jimenez of the Monmouth University women's
basketball team survived a hard foul, and the Hawks survived two overtimes to outlast Mount
St. Mary's Saturday, 95-91, in a wild Northeast Conference game at Boylan
Gym.
With the game tied with 55 seconds left in the first overtime, Jimenez was
rammed into the padded wall on a potential break away layup by Ditka Krumberger of
the Mount. She gradually righted herself, but then misfired twice from the line.
""When I fell my neck got caught up against the wall,'' said Jimenez. "I hope (the tumble had something to do with the misses.)"
But the sophomore from Carteret was on target in the second overtime. She drained a 3 that snapped an 87-87
deadlock and hit a 15-foot jump shot to make it 92-89.
Brianne Edwards locked up the win for Monmouth (8-5, 2-1) and
sealed a fifth consecutive defeat for the Mount (3-10, 1-2) which fell
despite a career high 30 points by Krumberger, a 6-0 senior from Latvia.
""We went too long to give up,'' said Jimenez who established
a career high with 16 points,
one of six Monmouth players in double figures.
""It was an exhausting game to play,'' said the 5-5 Edwards who set
career highs with three blocks and nine rebounds. She added three assists
and scored all of her 14 points in the second half and overtimes.
""It was exciting,''said Edwards. "'I try to go out there and be calm
and cheer my teamates on, try to keep things under control, and not let the
pressure get to your heads.
""It's conference time so every win we can get now is great.''
""Every time we play Mount it's always a good match up,'' said Michele Baxter,
Monmouth coach. ""A few years ago we went into four overtimes (in a win) at
Mount. So it's always an adventure when we play them.
"'From start to finish today it definitely was (an adventure),'' said
Jimenez.
Monmouth overcame second-half deficits of 13 and eight points to
extend the contest.
Edwards capped a 13-0 run with a personal 6-0 surge to even the score at
50 and Monmouth rallied from a 65-57 deficit to take a 77-75 lead on two Edwards
free throws with with 1:23 remaining in regulation.
""They shot the lights out,'' said Baxter of the Mount which hit 11 of 23
from deep. ""They played hard, they took advantage any time we helped out (on
defense).''
Veroncia Randolph, held to a pair of free throws vs. Long Island Thursday,
roared back with 24 points, and Jennifer Bender had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Lindsey Zegowtiz chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds, and
Nyaimah Ware also had 11 points for Monmouth.
Monmouth last scored 90 points Feb 26, 2004 in a 99-94 home loss to Sacred Heart.
The Hawks host Wagner (1-12, 0-3) 7 p.m. Monday.

Tony Im being sincere, it is just hard to get excited about MU women's hoops. They start strong often, then always fizzle. This years NEC pool is tough, and they will not beat out the likes of Robert Morris or Quinippiac, not to mention Sacred HEart. Just being honest. They will go 14-15 and then lose in the 1st or 2nd round year after year. How are we to get excited about it? Im serious.
At first I rejected this "Who cares" comment but have since decided to run it so I could respond...
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "MU women's hoops - MU vs. Mount post game thoughts. Am providing the women equal time, as we should":
The comment was - Who cares?
My comment - this just goes to show how narrow minded some people are. If you don't care, fine. But why impose that on others with a failed attempt at being funny or whatever?
By the way, this was a terrific game.
I'm not saying this team can win a championship.
I was speaking with one of the players yesterday and she asked me how I felt the team would fare in the NEC...
I asked her.. "Do you want my ""hopeful"" outlook or my "professional" opinion? She opted for "professional" so I said I thought they couldn't win the overall title.. that Sacred Heart was too strong, and I didn't even mention Robert Morris, etc. as we were talking...
She was a little taken aback, but her reaction was one more of determination to prove me wrong...(which many have done before) ..which would be fine with me.
I know what you're saying.. it IS incumbent on the program to make a SERIOUS championship run to help spur more interest on campus.
After they beat Wagner Monday.. they hit the road at Sac Heart and Quinnipiac. MU really has to at least split the trip to prove it can make some noise in the NEC Tournament.
LIU was a bad loss. If they can't beat LIU (which is a fair to good team) they can't make it to a high level in the NEC.
I just felt the "who cares " was a bit rough. Noramally I wouldn't have even run it, but I wanted to generate some discussion - though I will not run any similar posts..unless..like yours, the poster has something viable to offer.
If you don't care...then why the hell are you posting here??
Second of all, I think that the NEC will be hard for the MU ladies but I think they can do it. They really need to control their turnovers. They also need to play better defense that won't draw fouls (Bender especially). Offense is good and can be great if turnovers are controlled.
For almost as long as I can remember TOs have always been a problem for MU. Right now MU is averaging aprox 13 assists and 19 TOs per game which is a poor ratio and too many turnovers.
I still can't believe they didn't win a championship when Audrey Taylor was the PG
I'd like to see the ball in Brianne's hands a little more..but MU plays a very up tempo offense which also results in TOs.
In contrast I'd like to see them accentuate posting up Jen and even Zegowitz and work off of that at least more often than it appears to be happening.
