Shipman appealing, still hopes to play again this season

Monmouth sophomore point guard Michael Shipman told me today he is appealing a grade that would make him academically ineligible for the balance of the season. Shipman, averaging 6.8 points and a team best 4.9 assists per game, has not played in the last three games. He said he hopes to learn the result of his appeal in a few days.

Honestly who gives a crap. We're better w/o him, offensively and defensively and I mean that wholeheartedly.

I published that last comment because I wanted to answer it with, "You are so very, very, wrong.''

And I'm being diplomatic.

Just goes to show you that some so called fans don't have a clue. I'm hoping Mike is back& more importantly he gets his academic situation straight and keeps it that way.

Exactly.

First of all, MU prides itself on graduating its athletes.

As for basketball..right now the team is paper thin.

With Jhamar having an off night, and in foul trouble, Nunner had to play 27 minutes, one off his career high.

Alex is a capable player, had three assists, one turnover, two steals, and a career high EIGHT rebounds, a very sound, intelligent, game.

But he's also got to score a little (0-for-4).

Ship is really the team's only pure point guard. Jhamar, though he has great ability, is a work in progress at the position.

I hope Shipman wins this apppeal, as I think he is a valuable asset to the team. I also hope he bears down and studies for the remainder of the basketball season and for the rest of the semester.

My response would be this...MU has won the last 4 games and looked good. He would add to depth, but his decision-making is poor. People on this board dont all know basketball, so dont claim to. Monouth is playing very fluid basketball for the most part, and Shipman and Youngblood is a combination that doesnt mesh for me. Think what youd like though, but Ive heard similar comments from people IN and AROUND the program. Take that for what it's worth.

I like Mike, but I like MU a little bit better without him in thwe lineup, especially in the starting lineup. I think he could contribute, but he is not a threat at all to shoot from the perimeter, and makes bad plays down the strecth. Sorry.

Bottom line, while you cite his flaws - remember he is only a sophomore - the fact is, he would be a welcome return addition, in my opinion. You can never, ever, have enough depth.

I think there is some thought here by fans that if he comes back he would go right in the starting lineup.

Frankly, I don't see that. Jhamar, Saturday not with standing, has become a major force..but he is not going to be electric every night.

Great key note Tony, Youngblood is not going to be electric every night. He has a bad night and now everyone is looking for Ship to return. Was it really a bad night or just what no one expected to see. Look at it this way, you/we got to see that the kid was not Superman and that others on the team could really step up for the win. Overall it was a game that got the crowd involved, it was fun, exciting and we got a glimpse of what Big County could do, although he hit the floor 7 or eight times. Big Win. Go MU!!!!!

I think we've all gotten a little bit ahead of ourselves here. Shipman as well no one else said he was back. He's hopeful of course but, you know, he may well not return this year either.

For those who assume that MU only started winning once Mike was not there shame on you. Why could they have not just started to jell as a team and win with him there? As the PG he was getting the ball to his teammates & Jhamar was still scoring & providing excitement for the crowd. So to say they play better without him is an insult to the team as a whole and Mike personally and leads to unnecessary distractionson a team.I hope Ship is back so he can show all you fans what he is truly capable of.

MU is winning now because....it has made the commitment to slow down the pace, look for the good shot, let the offense work as a portion of the defense, which has also enabled the defense to play better.

Also.. the recent competition is certainly a notch below the caliber of the majority of opponents faced up to this point.

Tony, I know you remember as well as I do, the key mistakes Shipman made down the stretch in both the LIU and Hartfod games. Yes, he is a very good passer, but if he does come back, I see it in a 20 minute-reserve role. He needs to demonstrate he's committed to basketball and school.

I am going to have to agree with one comment about Shipman. He is not a good defender, especially for someone with very good speed. He lets guys go right around him, and is careless in the matchup. Talking with people in the know, prior to his absence, this was one of the biggest critiques of his. Is he alone, at fault on defense? No. But, he needs a lot of development. All this talk about Youngblood this and Youngblood that. How about some love for the steady players like Marques Alston and Whitney Coleman, who are consistent game in and game out, without making swoopin shots and behind the back moves? Also, Delic is silently having an unbelievable year scoring the basketball. How come none of this is regularly talked about Tony? Jhamar is excellent and believe me Im glad MU has him, but Coleman and Alston are almost never talked about on here or in the APP with any regularity.

Well..you just did, and made some excellent points.

Whitney..though he didn't score a lot Saturday had a fine all around game..six assists..hit the 3 that put MU head for good..didn't force anything though he is very adept at going to the hoop. In the streak has 16 assists and five Tos.

Marques has been very solid, fell two points shy of a sixth double figure game in a row Saturday.

While Delic receives acclaim for his 3's, he has become something of a "point forward" ..In the four wins on this streak he has 16 assists and eight turnovers.

OK. We have come to possibly creating pitting players against eachother for the sake of blogging? Come on now, are we all adults here? Maybe not all but most in there own right. But, if in fact these guys do read the blog don't you think that an open forum as such would create ill feelings? Ship is not Youngblood and Younblood is not Ship! Let's get more creative. And to the postee that said Youngblood this and Youngblood that - the hype about him is just that. He has brought excitement to this team. MU has never (and if never is to strong, too bad) had this much excitement brought to it game. Even if he doesn't make all his shot it's fun to watch. The game has become more than blocked shots and baskets. The energy the kid brings is great. Isn't it obvious, the capacity itself has increase with the last 3 games and the students are still on break. Heck, someone posted before that Youngblood pouts - well he is the only one that I see with a smile on his face out there. Not only has he brought energy he brought positive energy. CHEEEESE!

I don't see any player vs. player scenario shaping up here, especially over what is written on a blog.
In practice I do see how much Shipman is very much involved as a teamate and is also being a leader even if he is not active.

If he were to return I believe everyone would accept however their roles develop for the sake of going to the NCAAs. I think it would all work out, and Dave would be happy to have additonal, quality options.

If we are reading into facial expressions, there are a whole lot more smiles on everyone's faces than there were two-three weeks ago.

(Big smile on my face tonight after the Eagles defeated the Giants, near nervous break down not withstanding)

What are you talking about him being the only one smiling that ridiculous. And, he's the most excitement ever been brought to Monmouth basketball? Who are you, and how long have you watched MU basketball? Rahsaan Johnson and John Giraldo, those names familiar to you? How about Mustafa Barksdale, Jason Krayl, Glen Stokes? Those three guys werent as talented perhaps as Giraldo or Johnson, but played with tons of emotion. How about Chris Kenny last NEC and NCAA tournament shooting his guns and exciting everyone in Monmouth Ocean and the surrounding counties? Did you ever see Blake Hamilton jam on someone, then smile all the way back down the court? How about Steve Bridgemohan rountinely taking charge after charge and pumping his fist after a seldom recognized accomplishment? My point is this...No one player is the excitement that has been MU basketball over the past 10-15 years. Youngblood is fun and very very exciting, but your comment about him being the most exciting thing Boylan fans have ever seen is in my opinion absurd. Tony, I know you agree, you are a sound thinker. Thanks.

It's good to know that I've gotten you guys to come out of the woods to blog. Since the win won't get you to speak up, a disagreement will. You can thank me later Tony. CHEEEEESE!
