Just chime in

Drats.

Forgot to enable comments on the last two posts. My error.

Off to MU today for another look at football and hoops. Getting some material for hoops stories for this weekend as practice tips off. Women Friday night, men at 10am Saturday. Yes hoops is almost here.

I know it's the middle of football season but where do you think MU men's hoops finishes in the NEC??..and does it have a shot to produce another scare..or dare we say it..a first round NCAA upset?

Who is MU's biggest threat in the NEC. Robert Morris? CCSU? Wagner?

Oh, well. We're getting a tad ahead of ourselves. Lots of well thought out comments by you folks on the "interesting conversation" blog.

Monmouth should be right in the thick of it again for NEC mens hoops. Big question could be how their freshmen perform.

Will the new big men (Barlow, Dobriansky, & Gaitley) be of nay use this season, or will they turn into longer-term 'projects'?

Gaitley is going to red shirt. Dobriansky may.. he should in my opinion...one reason being they appear to not really need him this season as they are deep up front and he could use the year to develop his skills further. I think..in the end.. he could be OK. Has nice moves for a big man, needs to finish better. Barlow should see some action. In preseason he and Rickie" The Rookie"" Crews will probably be dueling for a "sixth man '' role though Barlow is more of a center and Crews a 4 or a 3. Crews could sub for Alston and or Delic. Barlow has some decent range.

Followup to my last note -- will Nunner, Youngblood, & Simpson contibute anything this year?

Youngblood - how do you spell - ABSOLUTELY. Physical, good ball skills, gets to the basket, and has point guard savvy.

Simpson … comes off the bench as a two or three. Can shoot the lights out. But currently has shin splint problems. Will not practice this weekend. Will have a bone scan Monday to, hopefully for him and MU, rule out a stress fracture.

Nunner...a reserve shooter. In my opinion probably not in main rotation at this time. More later tonight on football and hoops on a new blog.

As a very long time follower of MU men's hoops, I love the fact that Coach Calloway has gotten the program to a point that it is a legitimate contender every season. With that said, I think the top threats to the Hawks will Robert Morris, Long Island, and the team with the Hawk family connection, Quinnipiac (Russ Anderson's brother Karl).

Both Robert Morris and LIU were able to defeat Monmouth last year with RMU sweeping and LIU winning in the new gym by popping the threes like gum drops. MU needed OT to defeat Quinnipiac on both ends of the home-and-home.

Three's like gum drops??!!#@!. You should have been a sports writer. May I steal that from you at some point this season?

I'm just not worried about LIU. No size. MU will be more prepared for their threes than they were the first meeting last year.

My opinion..Karl Anderson should have come to MU which wanted him. He'd be all-league. Apparently didn' t want to follow in his brother's footsteps. He's a very good player, fine touch around the hoop. . Would have fit in with the MU offense like a glove. Bad choice by him in my opinion. At Q-Pack he's a fish out of water. Do they ever run anything for him? Do they ever play defense? That said, they could be troublesome. They will score points.

But yes..worry about Robert Morris. Athletes, more size than last year, a young seven-footer in the middle, 3-point shooters and tough, quick rebounders. MU was fortunate not to be in their and Mount's bracket in the NECs last season.

MU had the perfect draw in the first two rounds. LIU at home, CCSU which couldn't match up with them..and then had to play FDU at FDU. Now I thought that was a certain defeat. When it was 23-11 FDU, I was writing the obit.

We all know what happened.
