Count down to Colgate kick off

The remainder of the week: Plan to go over to MU football practice Wednesday and also check out the men's hoopsters again. Thursday I am at a high school football game. Then Friday it's off to beautiful upstate NY. Any early thoughts on Saturday's outcome? I will publish my prediction (pant! pant!) Friday. Colgate has a young line but its RB is on the Walter Payton watch list.

Have family obligations - wish I could go! My prediction is a close game - I wish MU would win but I have a feeling Colgate has seen the upsets happening from NEC/PFL teams and will bring their game. 31 - 28 Colgate.

MU/CCSU will be game of the year in the NEC.

Tony, using your best guess - who will be the QB of the future at Monmouth? Any QB's on the scholarship radar for Monmouth?

Former Wall QB Brett Burke is No. 2 as we speak and probably goes into next year as No. 1 He's been groomed for this and it's really his job to lose at this stage. I think he'll be at least OK. Will have been in the system going on four years in 2007. In practice throws an accurate ball. Haven't really been able to judge arm strength.

The battle, I think, will be for No. 2..between soph Kyle Brandon and freshman Ryan Folsom. Andrew Mandeville may wedge his way into the mix. Spring ball may tell a lot here. Have no read yet on what high school quarterbacks they may be going after, if any.

Interesting item in the Wilmington Del. paper that Albany gave out eight rides this year divided among 22 players. Callahan is quoted as saying MU offered "less than 10 (scholarships).'' I think MU probably was somewhere along those lines though I'm not sure that many (22) were involved at MU. Again.. this is all semi educated guess work on my part.

Do you have an idea of how many from this year's new group of schooly's are actually getting playing time or contributing to the newfound NEC improvement over OOC opponents?

I would think the one real impact schooly this year is CCSU's Justice Hairston, a senior transfer from Rutgers. Most of the other NEC winning teams seem to be senior led, like Monmouth, and wouldn't involve any of these new scholarships.

I tend to agree. As we get into the NEC portion of the season we'll learn who if any freshmen are seriously contributing this season. MU freshmen that have played in 2006 far as I can tell, Mandeville, Cella, Skorpuka, and Wright. But next year may be a different story among many NEC teams as these frosh are a year older and begin to make impacts and maybe spots open up for some incoming frosh in 2007.

I actually think that while the majority of these new schooly's will go to incoming freshman, look for the NEC to selectively use some of these to attract D-1A upper classmen not happy with playing time elsewhere. Strategically that could pay dividends down the road. Hairston is a great example of that.

You are correct. I have to figure MU will be involved in a player or players of this caliber somewhere down the road.
