questions for coach? Predict the games!

Am going over to the MU football practice Wednesday. Any time you have any questions you'd like me to ask coach Callahan just let me know. Also..predictions on the upcoming week's games are invited here. Of course, this looks like a no-brainer but you never know. St. Peter's (0-2) has yet to score a touchdown this season.

I also plan to watch the MU men's hoops team shoot around in the gym. Not all the players may be there but am curious to see the younger players and especially Rickie Crews, the leaper from South Jersey I have heard so much about.

Thursday's story is about MU's football depth in many areas on the field. It's one thing to have bodies but it's another to have quality depth and I think MU has that.

Someone in our office was asking me when QB Brett Burke (Wall) is going to play. He'll get his shot next year. If Hawks gain control early vs. St. Pete's he'll see action this week as he did for a few moments last week and in some other games last season.

Also coming Thursday is the first of our weekly wraps of how local players are doing at other college football programs DI, II, and III. If you have anyone in mind who you may wondering about or would like to see him in print please advise.

The obvious question: it looks like Knowshon Moreno is going to red-shirt at Georgia.

I believe they don't have to make a determination until after a player's regular senior year (for a player who has played three years but been in the program four).

I talked with wide out Mike McClelland after MU's final game last year and asking him about his plans (he had played three years but was in the program for four) and he told me he planned on coming back for his fifth year.

You may see more and more fifth-year seniors at MU as the depth is such that few freshmen play their first years..but want to play for four.

Of course, for those not on scholarship, finances must be addressed.

Dave Sinisi, for instance, a frosh who did not play last year, will have four years of playing eligibility if he wants it. He is listed as a Red-shirt now.

I will also check this out with coach Callahan.

Tony,

Am I right in assuming MU has a total of 4 hoops scholarships to give this year (I know they gave one out last week to the kid from SI, leaving them 3)?
I count Bunch, Hallett, Alston, & Delic as graduating.

Monmouth is favored by 32 points in one site! But the game's got to be played on the field, so focus Hawks!!

By the way, will Moreno have to switch to DB to get on the field at Georgia next year? That seems to be the consensus goign around other blogs.

I have e-mailed NJ college/hs football guru for the Press Chris Melvin about Moreno..will wait for his response.

Now..as far as the MU LBs...all three started last year and are back this year...Nunziato could have a RS year next year if he wants it as he did not play as a freshman.

If you're talking about next year..the MU depth chart for the MSU game had freshman Joe Cella, Tyler Burnett (soph, RS freshman) and frosh Jeff Brady listed as back up LBs along with sophomore (RS freshman) Matt Sterner.
It's safe to say MU will have considerable youth and inexperience next season (17 seniors start this season) ..which at least on paper makes this the year for MU to win the NEC and play in the Gridiron Classic.

Most of this year's scholarship players will see their first extensive action next season.

Just got this prompt reply from Chris Melvin:

"Knowshon is a definite at RB .... he has done great down there ...they are just loaded with quality upperclassmen who can get the job done. Shon is a RB and K/P returner ... but should get the redshirt year!"

The above from Chris Melvin of ELITERECRUITS.com who often lends his expertise to the Press...

How is Brian Callahan coming along? I know he was approached by some I-A football teams and am very interested to see what he can bring to the Hawks in coming years. Thanks for the blog!

The last phrase, "they are just loaded with quality upperclassmen who can get the job done" is precisely why the word at other blogs is Moreno needs to move to DB to get on the field next year. These "upperclassmen" are three juniors, NO SENIORS. Do you think they're graduating next year?

First of all..thank you all for your interest in the blog..

As for Moreno ..I can only pass on to you what Chris Melvin tells me......I will mention your statements to him..

Brian Callahan..in my opinion..is doing well and remains highly thought of..in practice he runs with the second and third teams last time I checked, and will again today...he certainly seems to have a lot of ability..catches the ball well.

MU has so many seniors and upperclassmen at WR it may be tough for him to see the field this year...Depends if he can show enough to move ahead of some of the others...He may be better served red-shirting if he's not going to be a significant contributor this season.

As for who got scholarships I don't know if anyone (maybe Callahan?) received a complete full shot of athletic department money..Callahan may have also gotten some money for baseball..

Coach is on record as saying MU gave out "less than 10" and declined to be more specific so even if I knew for sure I could not mention them publicly ..These scholarships, by the way, can be chopped up every which way into partials.

This is speculation on my part..but based on the first wave of players Monmouth signed, how they were regarded statewide, as well as their high school credentials, I would guess the following are among those who received some scholarship money...

Brian Callahan, Bobby Giles (RB), the three Jackson kids - Joe Cella, Joe Arneth ,Bobby Cole, Ryan Skorupka (RB), Shawn Wright (OL), Jeff Brady (LB), Nick Romeo (WR), maybe Nick Bibbo (OL), maybe Derek Rosinski (OL). That's 11 right there...so there were probably more. Andrew Mandeville came so late, probably not ..

...Again this is all speculation on my part based on when these players were recruited and their high school performances. Of those mentioned, Wright seems to be the only one who has seen some decent time so far. Cella played a little at Fordham on special teams.

I think you'll see most of these kids playing by next year.

How did the MU team look during shootaround? I hear this kid Crews is the real deal, a 6'7 athletic 4 who has been pegged as the "next blake hamilton". I know he had a breakout senior year, and was thought of as possibly a real steal for MU as an early signee. What is your take on him and the other NJ recruit Jhamar Youngblood? Also, how do you see MU doing this year without Tyler and Chris anchoring the backcourt?
