This week's coverage

On Wednesday I will be heading over tor MU fball practice to write a story for Thursday and also to get info for Saturday's advance on the Morgan State game. Saturday is the game, with the follow up story then to run Monday.

That's generally how the coverage schedule will be for the season.....at least that's the plan for now (always subject to change). Also..Saturday we may have a columnist at the game to provide double coverage of the home opener...

Anyone have any thoughts on who or what issues they would like to see a feature story about concerning MU football??

Tony,

How about a story on the o-line. Even though their names aren't in the stats, they're the guys up front that make it all happen on offense.

Thanks

Not a bad idea. We'll see how it goes. They did give up three sacks Saturday. If the team has a very good year coverage usally branches out into many areas....

Well...we should know more about MU's ability this weekend on a dry (we hope) field against a team that gives scholarships and is said to be athletic even though they lost last week to Towson, 30-2. Towson, by the way..was picked last in the Southern Div of the Atl-10..so that doesn't exactly make Morgan State Ohio State....but...who knows what to make of it all?

Remember, MU's "scholarship" athletes are freshmen none of whom made an impact in Game One far as I could tell. They may not provide much of a clout this fall with MU starting eight seniors on each side of the ball.

I want to see someone besides San Miguel become a factor among the wideouts. Fordham defensive backs were juniors and sophomores and were fooled badly on MU play fakes. On the first TD pass San Miguel was so wide open it looked like he could have gulped down a fast hot dog with mustard before making the catch.

And, yes, the MU RBs are still a question though Sinisi looked like a tough runner with some acceleration (especially on the screen pass) which he displayed in preseason. I still feel, at least right now, MU has to get a significant contribution also from Lutz and or Brice.

MU did go conservative in the second half, no question, as Callahan explained they did not want to throw the ball around in that monsoon. They ran several times when they probably would have thrown under better conditions.

I thought Mandeville did a nice job punting in the awful weather ...as a freshman you worry about mistakes but he did well ...

All this being said MU looked good and with potential .....And poor Fordham has Albany this week....

Overall...NEC went 5-3 in non-conference games on opening week but those wins against MAAC schools, other than any game vs. Duquesne, are usually like playing JV teams.

MU was supposed to be playing LaSalle of the MAAC this week but LaSalle backed out on the contract as I understand it. MU has outscored LaSalle like Five Billion-6 (well, maybe not that bad, but you get the idea) ) in their series.

Here's this week's Sports Network 1-AA mid-major poll from the NEC web site:

Somerset, NJ -- Following a successful opening weekend of play, the release of the first Sports Network Mid-Major Top-10 football poll of the 2006 season finds six Northeast Conference teams ranked.

Albany earned four first-place votes and moved up two spots from its preseason ranking to No. 2 after winning at Lehigh, 17-16. The Great Danes earned 183 total points. Central Connecticut State is up two pegs to No. 4 after a 34-6 triumph over Marist, while Monmouth vaulted one place to No. 6 with a 23-9 victory at Fordham.

Saint Francis (PA) entered the poll at No. 8 after dismantling St. Peter's by a 38-3 count. Wagner debuted at No. 9 in the rankings following a lopsided 38-15 win at La Salle. Stony Brook remained flat at No. 10, maintaining its ranking after a competitive 17-8 setback at Hofstra last Thursday.

With a 27-0 shutout of Azuza Pacific, San Diego (Pioneer League) solidified its hold on the No. 1 ranking, earning 17 out of a possible 22 first-place votes and 211 in total to claim the top spot. The Toreros won the 2005 Sports Network Cup.

Dayton (PL) fell one position to No. 3 in the poll - one point behind Albany - after a 21-14 win over Robet Morris. Duquesne (MAAC) dropped two slots to No. 5 after suffering a 31-28 overtime loss at Bucknell (Patriot League) while Drake (Pioneer) tumbled from No. 5 to No. 7 as a result of a 48-7 defeat at the hands of Northern Iowa.

.

The entire top 10 is in action this week, and five of the top-10 teams take on scholarship-level opposition. No. 2 Albany hosts Fordham and No. 4 Central Connecticut State is at Georgia Southern, while No. 1 San Diego plays host to Dixie State.

MU fans note: the NEC champion hosts the Pioneer champion in the first Gridiron Classic Nov 18

Was over at MU practice today. According to Kevin Callahan and Greg Visconi, the new MU SID for football, the only freshman that played Saturday besides punter Andrew Mandeville was Joe Cella (Jackson HS) on kick offs)...am doing a story for Thursday on the MU freshmen trying to break into the action.....talked with Cella and Brian Callahan, the wide out from Don Bosco..I remember the play but don't recall hearing number 60 called which is the frosh lineman..I thought it might have been 66 (Skellenger) but am not sure who it was ...they didn't list the guilty party on the play-by-play sheet either..

I totally agree with muhawk fan. I also don't care who it was on and it's not a big deal. Was trying to find out for the monmuthblueand white since he had asked. Time to move off this topic.

To finish the topic off, penalty was on #67, Derek Rosinski, a freshman, and was part of a double holding call on Dunn as well, which was refused.

Hope that answers the question for monmouthblueandwhite.
