This week

Writing for Monday on how MU hopes to avoid more penalties like those which cost it those long plays Saturday, for Thursday on Adam San Miguel and his fearless approach to punt returns, and, of course..for Saturday, a Colgate preview.

I hope to make the trip to Colgate...the Press should let me know by Monday at some point.

Here is the AP story on Colgate's win Saturday:'
HAMILTON, N.Y. (AP) -Jordan Scott ran for three touchdowns and 169 yards to lead Colgate to a 28-7 win over Dartmouth on Saturday.

The sophomore tailback, who also caught two passes for 28 yards, ran 65 yards on the first play from scrimmage for the Raiders (1-1). He scored on runs of two yards in the third quarter and seven yards late in the fourth quarter.

Colgate quarterback Mike Saraceno completed 14 of 16 passes for 175 yards. He threw one interception and a 15-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter to Brent Dillingham and ran for 38 yards on eight carries.

Dartmouth (0-1) took the lead 7-6 in the second quarter after a field goal was blocked by Ian Wilson. The Big Green then scored on a 56-yard drive capped by Milan Williams' one-yard run and Andrew Kempler's extra point.

Ton Bennewitz was 14-for-22 throwing for 102 yards for Dartmouth.

By the way... UMass (2-1) which beat Colgate 28-7..beat Villanova (0-3) Saturday, 31-21. UMass 'loss was to Navy 21-20. CCSU won at Colgate last year, 24-22.

Also..any thoughts on my men's hoop non-conference predictions. Reasonable? Right on? Way off? Etc.

Speaking of the MU b-ball schedule, any news on an exhibition game? I've heard possibly CW Post or Stockton College, are either the choice and if so, when? Thanks.

I believe it will be CW Post but I will check. Stockton (and Gerry Matthews) would have been a better story....

A quick update..just spoke with Dave Calloway..MU men's hoops will be playing an exhibtion game on Dec. 17 but not vs. C.W. Post. It might be Stockton or, if not the Ospreys, someone else ..but it will be playing sometime on the afternoon (Sunday) of Dec. 17.

MU has its Xmas break from Dec. 12-29 so it's a means of staying sharp. Also.. because of the early start of the season (Nov. 1O) it would have been difficult to squeeze a preseason game in
before that.

An exhibition game 12/17 against a div. II school after the season has started?
Kind of unusual, isn't it?

Yes it is..but it is not unprecedented. Back in Wayne Szoke's first year in '87-88 MU played an in-season exhibition game vs. Athletes in Action. It lost when, I believe it was Chuck McKay, missed a last second jumper. Calloway was on that team as a freshman.

Anyway..this year is unusual in that MU starts so early (Nov. 10) and Calloway didn't want to play a preseason game just a few days before the opener. And breaking up the long Xmas holiday with a game makes sense, too.

I believe MU will have a scrimmage against a D I team in late Oct. or early Nov that is closed to the public .

By the way. Stockton is Div III. Gerry Matthews, a former very successful Long Branch (anyone remember Alex Bradley and Joel Dobrin?) and Rumson HS coach, has coached there forever. Gerry had hoped to get involved in the MU job when it opened twice, when Ron Kornegay resigned in '86-87 and when Szoke stepped down in 97-98 but it never happened.

Correct. Now it's just a matter of the time. Interestingly that's the date of the Eagles-Giants rematch. Calloway (and myself for that matter) are big Eagle fans. Yes, last Sunday really hurt. But anyway, football game is scheduled for 1 pm and if that holds true, or gets moved to night, look for MU to tip off at 4 on that day. If game is moved to 4, I'll bet hoops goes at 1!! Just a guess on my part.
