""Jet/Whitney to play in JSBL/ MU athletics/local colleges, etc.

Lets's launch a fresh thread here for comments..on anything MU (or local colleges). Hoops, baseball , football, any subject.

Whitney Coleman and Jhamar Youngblood are listed on the Sterns JSBL roster in the league that will begin play next week. A full JSBL sked and rosters I believe are scheduled to run in Sunday's Press.

Hey Tony,

I'm not from down the way but I am a fan of the Hawk's now that Youngblood is there. Sorry that I don't have more time invested but, when does the JSBL start? Where are they played? You know all the major stuff...... Can you help me out, I would like to check it out. Thanks.

JSBL usually starts around mid June (so it won't be long now). We don't have a date just yet. As soon as rosters, etc. are available we will run them on the blog.

Hey Tony maybe with the way baseball preformed all season and especially in the NCAA you or the APP might start covering them more consistant basis. They proved to be on of the best teams monmouth had put on the Blue and White this year!

Re MU baseball. Yes, it had a teriffic season.

But, as you may have noted via this blog, it drew only a smattering of interest and comments though it certainly seemed to warrent more.

Hoops and football are followed closely by the Press because of its comparatively large following.

I wish, personally, we would cover local colleges as a true beat in the spring but, alas, we lack the manpower for same.

I mean, when you devote beat writers to cover high school golf and high school volleyball, well, the Press higher ups obviously feel those sports have more of a following than local college spring sports.

Please feel free to take any issues you have in this regard well over my head.

In all fairness, we did cover MU baseball in the NCAAS via a sister paper in Arizona and they did an adequate job I felt.

You did cover them through another paper. What about all year when they were breaking school records for wins? Brad Brach being one of the best pitchers in college baseball, not just the northeast conference? Andy Meyers leading the league in just about every offensive category? The press had no problem bashing the Hawks for their "collapse" last year. I just wish they would put the same energy into praising their accomplishments.

Re last year - I don't know they they were "bashed." Did they rate a headline for a rather spectacular collapse? Yes..they did.

Did they get headlines this year for winning the NEC?..Yes..,for going to the NCAAs..? Yes...

Was there a full feature on the Brach brothers to begin the season??? Yes. I did it.

When Brach threw his no-hitter was there a banner headline in the Press....streamed across the sports cover the next day? Yes.

Sooo..they did get their share of ink.

However...on a daily basis..most college results wind up in the sports shorts section due to the Press' vast spring commitment to high schools and no true college writer in the spring though myself and a few others try to keep involved as best we can.

That is due to: a lack of space and a small staff..which the sports dept. - by itself - has no control over...

MU baseball and spring college coverage is not going to get the coverage of hoops and football..not that I, personally, wouldn't like to see it because I would.

But...does it really warrent it interest wise?

Do 2000-3000 fans attend every MU baseball home game? Uh...no.

Don't get me wrong here. I, personally would love to see more coverage as I stated.

But there are reasons as stated above the Press feels it is not warrented.

The Press would have to hire another full or almost full- part time person in the spring to provide the coverage you desire and make additional space for it so as not take away away from (gasp!) high school volleyball, etc...and the Press is not going to do that (take away).

Overall..your issues would need to be addressed with upper management..and that's waaaayyy over my head...

Obviously all of these people who post on here about coverage issues have no idea how a paper works. Tony is told what he can write about and how much space he is going to get. He isnt the editor, he doesnt dictate what gets in and what doesnt at the end of the day. If you all really care about coverage for MU baseball, call the editor and complain. Also, make sure you are a subscriber first.

To last poster: I'd say you're rather on target here.

By the way..the sports editor is very college minded. There are staffing, space, and even amount and cost of paper used issues , etc. that all go into these decisions.
