Re: The MAC. Sunday Letter to the Editor/MU giving too much ground

Time for action on plan for gym

As a Monmouth University student, I am frustrated by the situation surrounding our proposed multi-activity center. Rather than trying to make friends with West Long Branch, the university needs to take the initiative to turn its battle out of the town hall and into the courts.

Now, Monmouth University uses Boylan Gymnasium for indoor athletic events. Facilities at other colleges in the Division I Northeast Conference put Boylan Gym to shame. The new facility not only will provide a state-of-the-art place to boost men's and women's basketball fan bases, but it also will provide Monmouth with needed office space, a new bookstore and more classrooms.

However, rather than confronting the Zoning Board and neighbors to get this resolved, Monmouth University is avoiding the inevitable court battle and makes concession after concession. It has decreased the number of seats and limited the capacity of events, in vain, because the Borough Council has voted it down each time.

The biggest concession the university has made, however, is allowing a few disgruntled neighbors to push it around and thus depriving the university of much needed facilities.

Sean,

Nice job. In my opinion in taking the "high road" MU has done everything but roll over and play dead.

But....coming to agreement with WLB is still the fastest route to starting construction.

However..if WLB votes against MU again at Thursday's meeting on the MAC then, I am certain, MU will go to court. And most everyone with some knowledge of the issue says MU will win, no question.
