Who do MU fans love to dislike (hate is a little strong) the most?

I can't take credit for this one...but it was sent in via the blog and really is an excellent early week topic...sooooo...here it is...(it was also posted on the advisory topic where was sent but comment on it here.)..

Tony I've got a really interesting idea for a post thread....

How about a post on which NEC team MU fans think is the biggest rivalry, or the team they hate/dislike/love to beat the most? I think this is a great idea, and I will start it up.

For me #1 is...

CCSU- Nothing gets me more excited than watching Howie Dickenman going nuts on the sidelines. He had to be elated to finally beat MU this year after such a long spell. MU has had CCSU's number for a while til this past game. Plus, they always have a great crowd, and many of their fans are simply nuts. DId you see the wackos going by the bench taunting Chris Kenny after the game? Unreal. I hate CCSU passionately.

2. Robert Morris...Schmidt just completely urks me. He whines like a baby for every call and his players overtly hate MU. Sveral players such as Derek Coleman have made sly remarks in Pittsburgh papers about MU. And, their own assistant coach is about the most annoying coach you'll see in Division 1. I was hoping to see MU and RMU get at it a little last night, but cooler heads prevailed. Well for most anyways Chapelle. I bet you enjoyed your trip back to Moon Township, all 8 hours with that L!

3. FDU...enough said. Tom GReen and the Green Machine boo! Good thing Crosariol had the vertical leap of a 250 pound fourth grader on Chris Kenny's game clinching layup last year.

4. Wagner...Ever since Jermaine Hall, oh I disliked him.

What do you think?

Without a doubt, Wagner and CCSU are the two teams I can't stand. FDU is a close third.

Well Tony as a new comer, I cant' say much about Loves or Hates. However, I can attest to the fact that RMU has rubbed me the wrong way. I witnessed the taunting and the dirty play on saturday. It was rididuclous. I can't say for sure which player it was but, one guy just continued to look over at MU's bench calling the guy a bunch of "Sissy's" during the free-throws at the last few minutes of the game. I would have hated to witness the taunting if they were winning.
Who I do hate truly is the NEC REF's. They must all have a personal beef with MU. The calls this season at HOME and AWAY
SUCK". BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Who the heck did Calloway piss off last season?

2 LIU for what they did in the NEC 97-99 not above the ball.

3. FDU just cause of the rivalary I have the utmost respect for coach Green.

Those are my top 3.

The team I hate the most and I am actually an alum of the school....FDU! There are two games that come to mind that when I think of their fans thinking the game was over and MU pulled out the win. Tony you may have to clarify the year but it was I believe a double overtime in the late 90's up at FDU that we pulled out in the end and of course the most recent game last year. Their fans were dancing around thinking the game was over and taunting the MU fans. There is begin a rabid fan and then there is this fine line that you cross and become obnoxious.
How about another thread about what everyone thinks about Monmouth fans. We seem to have the weirdest fans at times. It seems as though many people don't know when to cheer, when to get loud or just show some emotion for the team. The cheerleaders try to get the crowd to respond to the "M" "U" chant and no one gets it. The even hold up the cardboard signs to help out and our fans still don't get it. It's almost like people are embarrassed to stand up and cheer. Am I wrong here??

For me it's FDU -- simply because my hate for them predates MU's NEC days and it's had a longer time to fester.

I go back to the days before MU was Div I (FDU was), when we would go up to FDU and play them in some in some old school gym (prior to Rothman center), where maybe they'd get 100 or so fans, plus what they could fit up on a stage behind one of the baskets!
Anyway, we all hated Tom Green and his sly attitude back then, and it's just got worse since.

The top team for me without a doubt has to be FDU. After spending much of my life around MU basketball, Tom Green and the Knights have always been there. Even when Rider was around, Fairleigh was still the preferred rival due to the history.

RMU - I would consider that more of a rivalry of respect. With the exception of the 89-90 year when the Colonials prevented Coach Dave and the Chief Al B. to reach the promised land using an ineligible player (which resulted in the post-season sanction the following year), I don't believe anything was ever said or done to produce any true bad blood. The two just provided fun games through the years (71-70 comeback in the Boiler Room in 87-88?).

CCSU - Central is where Rider used to be in the NEC--the team who came in and right away started dominating. This is a rivalry of being at the right place at the right time. Howie and the Devils came in just as Calloway was about to take over, but MU was able to move up the ranks to the elite section of the conference to consistently provide adequate, if not superior, competition for Howie. So his tantrums on the sidelines is "Comedy Hour, Part 2" to sequel the original "Comedy Hour" Kevin Bannon.

Everyone else is in or out as a secondary rival dependent upon the level of play they are at as compared to the Hawks.

Bob...thugs?

A little strong there in my opinion. They play very hard and play good defense. You don't have to like Howie..not many MU fans do.

I know him somewhat personally and he's really a good guy. Tough coach though.

On the guy about the refs..I let that post run, but it was stretching the limit a bit.

This will not be a rag the refs site..yes.. you certainly may point out what you consider bad calls..but please stay under control.

I must have missed all that taunting and stuff everyone is talking about at the RMU game..I gotta ask Dave and the players.

I guess we're talking current NEC teams..but overall, Rider would rate right up there - maybe on top of the dislike (hate) scale - with MU rooters for sure.

Maybe Monmouth fans can't spell? Kidding, Kidding!!.. Spell check has saved my job.

MU fans, historcially, have been more adult than students, thus are more bland. That's always been a rap on MU fans, yet Boylan Gym appears to have a reputation around the NEC as one of the toughest road venues.

I thought it was loud and very enthusiastic Saturday night.

I believe you refer to the game at FDU in the '97 NEC semifinals
.

MU came from like 20 down with five minutes left in regulation...

Tony, you are correct. If you were to look at the mean age of our fans, I would say its close to 25-30 yrs old. It still gets very frustrating when there are times in the game when you need the crowd to get up and make noise and people just sit there. The 97' game is correct as well. I completely forgot about the Rider years, that was some rivalry. But we sure showed them in 1996 when "Q" hit those free throws with one eye open!

No question - FDU. Been up there many times and find their fans pretty obnoxious (and Tom Green too).

You have to give Tom Green credit though because he recruits athletic kids and consistently wins. Even in a bad season they are no pushovers.

Tony,
The reason Boylan has a rep around the NEC as a tough place to play is probably because we actually have fannies in the seats -- most NEC teams don't get more than a couple hundred/game.

There is no love lost between MU and CCSU. I think its a rivalry based upon the sucess of each team - the Hawks or the Blue Devils have represented the NEC in 5 of the last 7 NCAA tourneys.

MU is arguably the top NEC team in the last 4 years, and historically one of the all-time stongest programs. There has been some incidents like Alston's last second lay-up, Kenny's 3-pt shot, and the fact the Hawks eliminated CCSU from the NEC tourney 3 years straight. Yes, the Blue Devils despise Monmouth.

That being said, at CCSU we "hate" Quinnipiac more than any team and we are 15-2 vs. them since they joined the NEC. They suck and we own them, but those are the rich kids who look down at CCSU 'cus we're not UConn. So I can see how your biggest rival would be FDU based on a longer history and in-state rivalry.

CCSU and SFPA also usually draw well...not much to do out there in Loretto, Pa., except climb snow drifts. But some of the venues are absurd..

Though they have only had five home games apparently Sacred Heart fans haven't figured out yet they might win the NEC..

Hope you can read this (below) ..if not, it's on the NEC web site...Quinnipiac crowds will go up for the remainder of the year with the advent of their new arena (as MU fans sigh)

To the Blue Devil fan...How much does CCSU hate Chris Kenny, honestly?

4:17 PM, January 29, 2007
Blogger Tony Graham said...

This from the usually mild-mannered Bob Curran..I had to edit it just a tad....(when he sees RMU uniforms his blood apparently starts to boil over!)....

Tony,
Just ask Chris Kenny and Tyler if they're "thugs".It's mainly Derek Coleman.....biggest (oops- you can't say that on here!) in the league.

As far as the guy complaining about the refs...It all evened out with some make up calls.

The one ref.who hates MU is that little black haired guy Jackie. Forgot his last name and thank God he hasn't done many if any games.

To Bob and all... really.. honestly I doubt if any refs "hate" MU or any other team.

From what I hear Calloway is one of the most respected coaches by the refs in the NEC because they know when he complains he usually has a valid reason.

Tony,
Overall, I think LIU, CCSU, & FDU are on the top as the teams I don't like very much.
1. LIU going back to days of Charles Jones. When they came to Boylan, thier fans were awful!!!
2. I played against Howie back in '69 & '70. He was a 'hot head' back then on the court. No surprise he's the way he is now as a coach. I must say that when I went down after our 1st game with them in '97 (we won), and said 'hi' to him, he remembered me!!! Since then, he just 'ok' when I see him.
3. Tom Green..nothing else to say; his actions speak enough!!!

Yes, CCSU fans can't stand Kenny. His antics in that game were childish and inappropriate. The "gun-slinger" was acting like a punk and the 3-pointer was all about him - and not the team. What does that tell ya?

Personally I respect your coach - he's built a great program, but you gotta pull the reins in on crap like that. Was Kenny good - yeah. But you won't see anything like that from a Central player - EVER!

Had to edit this a tad I felt...I'm not very much into allowing calling players (MU or opposing) names on this blog..

Person first had a few unkind words for RMU's Derek Coleman. Then blogger also said, "" and Tony Lee is no angel either believe me. Rarely, rarely, do you see MU players taunt the other team, I dont mean celebrate, because they do like anyone else, but rarely do any MU players "show up" the other team.

I spoke with someone today who should definitely know....they bascially confirmed that they feel feel some RMU players.. are well... let's say...not all that high class with their demeanor and or comments.

I let the last Blue Devil comment run because:

1. Kenny is now a coach and he can take it.

2. And he later admitted he was out of line.

3. Also, he was really just having some fun and was not intent on embrassing CCSU (I certainly can see how CCSU fans would take it that way, though).
I'm sure MU fans would have been outraged if, say Chiera or someone (just to throw out a name)..was in a similar mode at Boylan Gym.

But Chris has apologized.. in the Press and on the blog.....OK?

Chris was the rare exception of where you mgiht see an MU player get a bit out of hand.

To Blue Devil fan: Javier Mojica ran by the MU bench after this year's CCSU win and shouted in the direction of the coaching staff; I spoke to someone on the bench who confirmed that. Sorry to disappoint you. Mojica is going to choke in the playoffs like the CCSU Blue Devils b/c Kenny is still sheriff in town.

I'm not trying to say its all about Kenny, this is just a tough fought rivalry - just like in football. Trust me CCSU is more concered about their next game right now than worring about MU. But this is the kinda stuff that builds rivalries - precieved disrespect on both sides. I think the CCSU/MU rivalry is one of the best in the league!

I like CCSU's chances this year, despite their lack of size and a deep bench. I think RMU and SHU may have better talent, but the "better" team doesn't always win.

FDU didn't have the heart last year and we all saw that. CCSU was 1 dumb loss (at SFPA) from winning the #1 seed. And you guys dumped them in the finals. I don't see RMU taking this thing right now.

Blogger Tony Graham said...

This might be Howie's best coaching job..ever, at least to this point anyway.

Those CCSU teams that won championships, had considerably more talent and size.

That said..midway NEC Coach of the Year - in my opinion - would have to be..Dave Bike at SHU.

Any thoughts here from anyone on this?

MU fans,

I have no idea if we recruited Youngblood. I'm sure we did becasue he is a very good player. Many NEC teams usually target the same player, just as Rutgers and Seton Hall go after the same player too. Trust me that's not a big deal - no hard feelings there.

And I'm certain you guys wished you had a few of our prized Jersey products like Chiera (Colonia) or Nwadike (Jersey City).
