My thoughts on MU men's hoops vs. Wagner
Negatives? Uh....lemme think. They took a hasty 3 or two? -( bad Deki!) but not many. And were outrebounded off the offensive glass, 13-6. Somebody mentioned to me Wagner's splurge and a few MU turnovers in the last two minutes, but the game was over. Didn't concern me.
This also marked the third game in a row MU played a team minus a key player. Just had to mention that didn't I? But, again MU did capatilize, nothing wrong with that.... and Wagner did beat RMU and almost upset Indiana State.
Positives..overall, too many to list. But I again liked MU's tempo (broken record here), that's how they're gonna win (more broken record), and they looked to get the ball into Bunch (more, more broken record).
I especially want to mention Coleman and "Jet." Whitney had a quiet but deadly game..15 points, 5-6 shooting, four rebounds, a block, played good D I thought.
Jhamar.. seven assists..four turnovers..I'll take that ratio most any night..plus his points (9), rebounds (5), steals (3). He only took six shots...I got the feeling if the game been more competitive later in the second half he would have turned more aggressive.
But I think JY is getting a great deal of pleasure out of being a "quarterback" to compliment his and the team's offense.
With Mount St. Mary's at MU Saturday..here is the story off the Mount
web site on its four OT win at LIU Thursday..
Mount St. Mary's outlasted Long Island, 78-76, in four overtimes in the longest game in school history on Thursday night at the Wellness Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Freshman Kelly Beidler ( from me - a 6-5, 205 pounder) scored nine of his 15 points in the overtime periods as the Mount snapped a four-game losing streak. The Mount is now 3-10 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast Conference.
Freshman Will Holland opened the fourth overtime with a three-point basket, his only basket of the game, to stake the Mount to a 75-72 lead. Beidler and Jeremy Goode (fro me - six assists, eight Tos) each added a free throw to give the Mount a 77-72 edge with 3:12 left in the fourth overtime. Long Island (5-8, 1-1 NEC) responded with four straight points to cut the Mount lead to 77-76. On the next possession, Goode again hit 1-of-2 free throws with 22.3 seconds left for a 78-76 lead.
Long Island's Eugene Kotorobai then missed a three-point attempt from the corner and the Mount's Guyvans Richard was fouled with 3.8 seconds on the clock. Richard missed both free throws and the Blackbirds corralled the rebound and got the ball to Jaytornah Wisseh, who got off a a three-point attempt that rattled out, giving the Mount the victory.
The Mount held a 53-44 lead with 11:03 left in the second half before a 15-2 run by the Blackbirds gave Long Island a 59-55 advantage. Beidler scored on a baseline dunk off a feed from Goode with 1:03 left. After an LIU miss, senior Mychal Kearse's driving lay-up with 34.8 seconds left to force overtime.
Kearse hit two free throws with 59 seconds left in the first overtime to force a second extra session. Beidler's lay-up on a lob pass from Goode with 36 seconds left in the third overtime forced the fourth OT.
"It was a really gutsy win for us," said Mount St. Mary's head coach Milan Brown. I thought a lot of guys stepped up, especially with the foul trouble we were in. We got big efforts from everyone and it was a great team win."
Junior Chris Vann scored 21 of his team-high 23 points in the first half to pace the Mount offense. Beidler added 15 pionts and seven rebounds while Kearse chipped in 14 points and six boards. Goode added 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
James Williams paced Long Island with 24 points while Aubin Scott chipped in 14. Kotorobai added nine points and a game-high 16 rebounds for the Blackbirds.
The Mount completes its six-game road trip at Monmouth with a 7:00 pm game on Saturday night.
Games Notes: The win was the Mount's first road win of the season after opening the year with eight straight losses on the road...The last Mount game to go triple overtime was a 90-82 loss to Central Connecticut State on Feb. 2, 2004.

Re: Playing last 3 teams missing a key player, that doesnt concern me and this is not meant to be a shot at you, Tony. They played against who was on the court, and won each game handily. Last night Wagner might have been worse with Vinson in the lineup, being that he's been out all year, that could have disrupted chemistry issues. While I dont think Wagner is a great team, Deane does get them to play very hard every year, and this team looks to have a good measure of chemistry. With Lehigh, Mgberoff would not have been a 32 point difference, but I think it would have maybe been 12-20 points. With LMU, yes those two kids out severly weakened them, but we will take all three wins and keep improving. Very happy with the progress indeed.
Overall I think it was a pretty good game. Defense was awesome and the intensity of the team seemed very high. I hope we can keep this up throughout the season. Toward the end of the game did you notice Dave walk down the bench and talk to Crews? I'd like to know what that was all about, did Crews say he didn't want to go in with 40 seconds left in the game? I'm assuming you saw the same thing I did and don't want to comment until you have some facts?
As a fan for over 25 years, ranging back to Dave's playign days, I would have to say that Ron Krayl deserves a great deal of compliment for his role in helping guide this team. He has been a mainstay from the good days to the bad days and now back to the good and everywhere in between. The defense has been excellent over the years, and he has to be recognized for his role in helping stabilize this program. Coach Krayl is a low-key guy, but I think far too few people are aware of how important he has been to this team. The defense is seemingly back on their way to leading the NEC in points allowed once again. Also bravo to the kids for their tremendous effort last night, and over the past three outings. They are playing very hard and it is starting to show. Also, it is nice to see "Coach" Chris Kenny, a local product out there coaching his ex-teammates, he will do very well for himself. Go Hawks. And Tony, thank youy for this great blog page.
Right on about coach Krayl. As you may know, in his 30th season, he is the second longest running assistant coach in the nation to Bernie Fine from Syracuse.
But if you have a chance to attend a practice, or ask of people who are present, you will learn this statement " Coach Krayl is a low-key guy" is usually 360 degrees from his practice demeanor.
And I have to say this: fans complain sometimes about coaches hollering at players during games, etc - but any yelling - and this certainly applies to practice - is almost always constructive. And - while pointing out errors - is aimed at making the player better.
As one coach said _ I think it was krayl in practice the other day - and I have found this to be true - "if we're not yelling at you, you should be worried."
I state the following because it is a fact - Sean Barlow does not hear much yelling directed his way in practice (a little, sometimes).
