Wednesday MU men's hoops practice, some boiling thoughts about Boylan Gym

Here I sit in an emtpty Boylan Gym at 445pm Wednesday having just completed, and sent to the Press, my NEC outlook on MU men for Thursday paper which I will attempt to run on the blog later. I say attempt because I have been having some internet problems here. If I can't send it from here I will blog it from home later this evening after the women's game

Got here at the end of men's practice..all players were present and acccounted for..no injuries either. Wow. No wonder posts have been down. Everyone is in shock with all this non bad news.

Yesterday we talked about extra practice. Today Deki stayed after again raining threes and Corey stayed after as well working extensively with coach Calzonetti on all aspects of his game. Jump shots, free thow shooting, drives to the hoop and dunks, and did a ton of running when he missed a required amount of made shots. I was exhausted just watching him. It was good to see him working extra. If he hits a few more shots Thursday night vs. Wagner maybe it will have paid off.

Afterwards Deki and Corey engaged in a half-court shooting contest. The loser had to buy the other dinner. Corey is buying.

I had a very nice chat today with Rickie Crews. He was very friendly and honest. It wasn't a formal interview but I was impressed with his sincerity and hopefullness to become a viable part of the team.

Let there be light? Yes, word from Boylan events chief Rich Carragaher is there will be improved lighting at Boylan Gym beginning with new and brighter lights being installed for the next Monmouth home stand which begins Jan. 25 with a men's game vs. SFPA.

There was some informal, very informal suggestions tossed around today by myself and a few others who have no clout whatesoever in these matters about making improvments to Boylan Gym since the Hawks seem destined to be here for a while longer.

What about: 1)Taking the basketball championship banners which are buried in the north corner behind the stands - the women's NCAA banner is virtually out the door (someone please point this out to Marilyn) - and placing them and Ron Kornegay's retired number 22 in the rafters opposite the NEC banners above the home side Press table. This way, fans will actually see them (a novel thought).

2): Move the student section to the center of the stands behind the opposite side Press table (I will wear earmuffs, but no problem). Anyway, there haven't been enough students here yet this year to make it necessary. I would say keep the pep band in the corner, though, so it doesn't drown out the radio.

3): A NEW, MODERN SCORE BOARD where the flag and NEC emblem is currently situated above the entrance to the weightroom. Still keep the old one (which you can barely read from the opposite side), but the scoreboard would have animations - for instance the flag would be animated for the National Anthem prior to the games. When Jhamar "The Jet" flies coast to coast it could have a jet whizzing by. Hey, It may be a bit corny but why not?
It would have instant replay, etc., etc. As each MU starter is introduced an action highlight of the player would be run on the scoreboard. How about instant replays during the games?

Would this cost money? Sure. But I think MU has to do a little something to
rev up Boylan Gym since, as I said, the Hawks it appears are going to be here for longer than they may have anticpated.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Well..someone' s gotta bring these suggestions before Jeff, Marilyn, or Gaffney to make it happen.

I just want to add about Corey's workout Wednesday..especially since he's been taking some heat this year. He was really busting his gut in this workout. It was very strenous and extensive. I don't know what it will translate into but at least he was out there working extra, still trying to get better.

Tony, I agree that the gym needs better lighting. They will probably just replace the existing old fading bulbs with new ones which will help alot. However, if they were to move the banners to the rafters as you suggested they would block the light from giving an even lighting effect just as the now present NEC team banners do. Go across the court at tonight's game and take a look at the Mt. St. Mary's banner and notice how it is lit so bright. That's because it's blocking the light from going to the side. The fixtures would need to be lowered to evenly light the floor if you were going to put more stuff in the way up there. The existing banners should be moved out of the way and put on the walls in my opinion. The batting cage netting also cuts down on the lighting in the seating area which then doesn't reflect light towards the court. All the bulbs, including the ones over the seats, need replacing to give the gym an even lighting condition.
