MU women's hoops/for tomorrow's Press

WEST LONG BRANCH - By slowing down, Marisa Jimenez' game is starting to
accelerate.
""Now I'm just thinking more, being a little smarter, taking my time,''
said the sophomore guard for the Monmouth University women's basketball team.
""I'm starting to make better decisions,''said Jimenez.""In practice
coach (Michele Baxter) has been yelling at me, "Make the easy pass.'
""And now the girls are expecting the pass instead of me throwing it when
they're not expecting it.''
The 5-8 Jimenez, who graduated Carteret High School as the school's all-time
leading scorer in girl's basketball, enjoyed her latest solid, all-around
effort Sunday when Monmouth (7-4) leveled Lafayette, 79-62, at Boylan Gym.
Jimenez scored 11 points, dished out five assists, and was one of three
Monmouth players to set a career high in steals as she made five in the win
over the Leopards (2-11).
Last season Jimenez averaged just 3.4 ppg., and had 32 assists and 57
turnovers but over the last four games is scoring at a 10 ppg. clip with 17
assists and 12 turnovers.
""I had to go from in high school when I had to do whatever I had to do,
to now in college I grew up, have more patience, I see everything a little
better
when I have my head up and I'm slowing down,'' she said. ""That's as opposed to going full speed and then I'm like, "Oh man, I can't
always see everything.''
On Sunday Jimenez took a pass after an offensive rebound and immediately
whipped the ball under the basket for a Vernoica Randolph layup for
two of
Randolph's career high 26 points.
""Marisa has been working hard, doing a lot of extra shooting, doing a lot of
things on her own to try and improve her game,'' said Randolph. ""It's really
showing.""
Despite Lafayette entering Sunday's game on a nine game skid Monmouth took no chances. It burst to a 32-18 lead with Randolph scoring 16
of the Hawks' points.
""We came in, knew what we had to do, we got things done, and came out with the
"W," '' said Jimenez.
Monmouth resumes Northeast Conference play Wednesday night at home vs.
Long Island U. (7-5, 1-1), the team that bounced the Hawks from the 2006 NEC
Tournament in a first round game at Boylan Gym.
""Can't wait, can't wait,''said Jimenez of returning to NEC play.
. ""We're definitely excited for
that,'' she said.
