WEST LONG BRANCH - It was a stuff by 6-10 Monmouth University senior
Corey Hallett of a high arching pass from
rookie Jhamar Youngblood that drew the loudest roar from the crowd
Thursday night.
But it's been the grueling hours in the otherwise silent and empty
facility in the
mornings and late afternoons
working with assistant coach Mark Caloznetti that perhaps helped pay off for
Hallett Thursday.
Efficient and effective, Monmouth rolled up a 20-point lead late in the
second half and coasted home, 69-58, for its third win in a row in a Northeast Conference
game before 1,635 fans.
""I'm used to it (the tough practice') by now, it's my fourth year,'' said Hallett of tracking
down balls, shooting, and running (after misses), in the drills.
Thursday Hallett contributed all seven of his points in the second half
to tie his season high set three games ago when
Monmouth (6-8, 1-1) pulled away from the Seahawks (4-9, 1-1).
""It's good,'' said Hallett of the extra work. ""He (Calzonetti) says, "You've gotta make shots under pressure.'
""The game is easier than that, so when the game comes it just flows. That's
the practices) are harder than anything I'll ever do in a game.''
""We've been getting (practice shots) up whether it's in the morning, at
night, or after practice,'' said Hallett. "'Yesterday (Wednesday) I decided
to go after practice instead of before. It's nothing new, it's just being in the gym, keep working.""
''""Corey is a big factor for us,'' said Monmouth coach Dave Calloway. ""He
hasn't been shooting the ball particular well in the games but he's making
them in practice.
""We tell him to keep shooting and he's going to make them. He hit a
couple tonight. He was a little bit more active, his rebounding was a little
bit better.''
"We didn't play well,''said Mike Deane, Wagner coach. "'When we did play
well we didn't finish the shots. And when we missed shots we didn't get back
and check well.''
Monmouth was in front 36-33 with 15:12 remaining in the game
when senior Marques Alston (10 points, seven
rebounds) hit a layup on a nifty feed from Dejan Delic (15 points, four
assists).
The basket by the former Neptune High School star, who registered his
fifth double figure game in a
row, triggered a 19-4 run by Monmouth that put the game away. The lead crested at 65-45 on a layup by Alston with 2:20 remaining.
"They (Wagner) were on 35 (points) for a while and we went on a little run,'' said
Calloway.
""We came out in (the second half), didn't let them get any shots in the
post, and the lead went up,'' said Alston.
After shooting 41 percent in the first half (11-for-27) which ended with
Monmouth ahead, 32-25, Wagner cooled to 30 percent (9-for-30) in the second,
but made just six field goals until the final 2:06.
Monmouth shot 62 percent (13-for-21 in the second half.
""Coach said in practice (Wednesday) no team has ever gone 0-2 (to begin
NEC play) and won the league,''
said Hallett. ""So we knew tonight was the most important game of the year.
"'We've got to come back ready to work tomorrow (Friday) and then Saturday
(vs. Mount St. Mary's) will be the most important game of the year.
""That's how we're going to take it from here on out.''
Sophomore Whitney Coleman led Monmouth with 15 points while
Youngblood, with a crisp all around game, dished of a career high seven
assists while scoring nine points, grabbing four rebounds, and making three
steals.
John Bunch added nine points and blocked four shots.
Justin Drummond, a 6-6 sophomore had 14 points to lead Wagner.
Said Calloway, ""It was a good win, our first league
win, and we
look to get
better from here.''
NOTES.. Wagner 6-6 junior James Ulrich scored his team's first 10 points and
one point the remainder of the night....Monmouth has held its last three
opponents under 60 points.

I am editing this to cut out the last comment about Rickie Crews, which, however, has been mentioned by just about everyone.
However, until I check it's accuracy, and talk to Dave Friday I am not going to run it, simply so it is not possibly taken out of context.

Hey Tony,
Great game tonight. The guys were GREAT!!!!!! Go MU!!!!!!!!
Tony, with the "W" I guess it's gonna be quiet for quite some time. We are gonna have to create a conspiracy or something or your stats are gonna go doooooown. NO more 7 million hits... I know you here the crickets.
Tony,
I have seen the last three home games, and not to do the broken record thing, but that team right now is on fire. The first half seemed slow, but they can turn it on. And yes, i do hope this "blog" is quiet for a while, and all the couch coaches, trying to act like they know Calloway and staff, or the athletes, will close there mouths for a week, and stop acting like they have the "inside scoop", and try to put down these coaches or 19 year old kids. It's a team, no team is perfect, kids will be kids, leave them alone. From when i was young i learned if you dont have something good to say, be quiet. Chances are the haters on this blog could't make a Division 3 level ping pong team.

Well...we don't want a "quiet" blog, perish the thought.
