MAAC comments

Comments of outrage, anger, frustration, and bewilderment over the WLB Zoning Board action vs. the MAAC and critics of the WLB mayor and government continue to appear on various blog topics, so I have created this file to centralize additional MAAC remarks.

Again, feel free to e-mail our news dept. - metro editor John Schoonejongen (jschoone@app.com), Investigations Editor Paul D'Ambrosio (pmd@app.com), and Managing Editor Gary Schoening (garys@app.com) with any concerns, issues, knowledge, information, or background for the Press to review or pursue re: the government of WLB, and specifcially the MAAC issue.

Tony,

Great work in keeping up the pressure on this.

I agree the protesting should start within the MU community, with WMCX & the students. How about those fraternities that show up at home games getting something organized as a frat project?

I'm an alumus, and am willing to donate my time to help out (phone calls, fliers, etc.) as soon as something gets off the ground on this. I think there will be others too once it starts up.

Tony,

How about getting members of the club that meets before home games (forget the name) to get something organized to protest?

Can you run that by them?

I believe that would be the Varsity Club. One of the people you would want to get a hold of is Don Burnaford - muhawks@comcast.net. A lot of what you seek probably has to be initiated by them and or the college itself. Probably nothing will happen until after the holidays.

Tony,

Great posting about the WLB residents and the MAC in the comments section under the Stockon article of your blog.

I agree, the coalition is breaking up and quickly.

How about at the last zoning board meeting during public comment, the Vice President of the coalition's wife spoke about and supported the MAC. This is a woman who lives across from the proposed tennis courts and detention basin and has been a resident of WLB forever.

Now you tell me, are the residents and the once members of the coalition starting to realize the selfish agenda of the Hughes'?

Ok this MAAC crap is making me sick...how about some hoops talk...Tony can you post a poll/question or something on MU basketball, maybe even historical MU hoops not this year?

For that last person (I assume a student) to call the topic of the MAAC 'crap' shows that getting help from their ranks may take some doing.

To minimize the significance of putting all our energy behind this project is to just leave MU hoops mired in exactly what everyone on this blog has been complaining about for weeks now -- small successes, but no major breakthroughs!
Hey, maybe that's all that guy cares about! I'm sure I've been around here much longer than him, and I want much more -- that's why this 'crap' topic will be a constant on the blog.

First of all...today I received an e-mail from a WLB resident who took issue with my "Out of Touch" column which ran Saturday in the Press and is also posted on this blog (just in case you happened to miss it!).

Let's see...today is Tuesday sooo it took almost three days for ONE person to fire off a rebuttal.

I have no problem with his e-mailing me and asked him if I could run it on the blog. He has not responded to that request as of yet.

Anyone who wishes to object to the MAAC or my stance on it may certainly comment here as well as those who have been blasting the WLB government.

As long as comments are not personal, or outrageous rumors or speculation, I will run most comments on any local collegiate subject.

For those who do not wish to talk MAAC, I will come up with another topic very shortly. I do hope to contact Dave later Wednesday after the team has returned to practice.

Also.. the MU women (5-4) host American U. (4-7) 7 p.m. Friday

I ike to first state that any MU students who read this blog should definately take the words written here as a launching pad for your anger and outrage that a town that you spend millions of dollars in each year feels the need to treat YOU they way that they have with this vote. I say YOU because you are what this university is all about. Without students there is no university and the MACC is for student use.
Many of you may look at it as "well i wont be around to enjoy it so what the hell do I care." Please do not take that stance, for once stand up for something that is right and use your power as a MU student for something that will benefit students in the future. MU is your home and it is a place that you will look back to 20 years from now and remember the fond memories you had. Use this opportunity to band together and fight this. You will be suprised how many people will be there in your corner swinging with you. You have to make sure you do it in a way that is organized. We will support you!

Wow..you got me fired up!

You're right of course..a lot of this is up to the students who MUST conduct themselves in an organized and above board fashion.

Thanks Tony, I'm fired up as well. Our students sometimes feel that they since they won't benefit from something then its not important. I just want them to see this as bigger than just today or tommorw. They can truely make a difference.

We may be dreaming to think the student body is going to be up in arms about this. I think the student support at the men's basketball games is pretty poor. Many mid season conference games there appear to be about 20 students up in the bleachers. For a championship game everybody comes out and goes crazy. Check out the crowd on a cold Tuesday in January.

The student body support at MU for mens hoops is TERRRIBLE! How many football players go to the games? I have persnally seen many of the bball players men and women at the football games. How many students average a game about 100? Rider, a team MU has a better recent success rate than gets probably 500-800 students a game. Enough said. A student body divided will never get anywhere.

Maybe Calloway needs to reach out to the student body somehow. Have midnight madness have a pep rally, do anything. He has done nothing fun for the students nor acknowledged them and their support in any way! Maybe he is at fault?

It has been my experience that, though many years of covering MU men's hoops there is often more community support for men's basketball than student support.

While some of this has to do with a few home games being played during Xmas break, that is really a sidelight.

Student support rises and falls with the success of the team. It has been better at times in recent years, and fervent for some key games, but at other times students have been MIA.

In all fairness on the current matter students are currently on Xmas break.

But, if students can't gather themselves to make themselves heard on this issue, as I have stated before, maybe they don't deserve a MAAC.

Dave is to blame? I'm all for Midnight Madness, but let's not get carried away.

To "Google this"....what were you implying there? Open to too much speculation ..and what would that really have to do with the MAAC anyway?

To Google this (again)....

OK..if you have something specific to say just e-mail me at tonygsports@aol.com..

I get the feeling your take is - the men's hoops team team does not deserve a MAAC for any number of reasons. Correct me if I'm wrong.

And what about the women's team? and the other athletes and the non student athletes and the community that would benefit from the MAAC?

To Google (who ever you are),

I don't know what it is that you posted, however just from Tony's remarks and my imagination i am concluding that you quite possibly made reference to the Men's team not deserving a new/better arena. If that be so I hope that you are not that shallow to have come to this conclusion because of their record, ability, or style of play. If so, you are in fact the one that is "Out of touch" and "shameful". Are you related to the Hughes' or the Fisher's or anyone on the zoning commitee? Hmmmm? I wouldn't care if they lost every game this or any other season for that matter. The students and the school deserve an upgrade if but for no other reason than - it's a school and it's time to make improvements for the current students and future prospects. TSK,TSK,TSK Now, "Let that be the reason".

In all fairness to Google he was not referring to the team's record...I think he has other issues with the team but he has not been specific. IN a non-related issue please see latest blog topic on "Sweet 16"
