Letters to the editor re: the MAAC

Our news desk tells me.....

The Press will be running some letters to the editor - beginning Thursday - from folks critical to my published stance which was critical of the WLB Zoning Board rejection of the MAAC. There may be also one or two letters who agree with me.

When they run, I will publish all of them on the blog in the event you wish to comment.

Great News,The more we can keep this story going the better MU will look.WLB will show their true spite for all young people going to MU.

Maybe NEWS 12 will run a story and then ABC will pick it up next.

The more the words gets out, the more everyone will agree how "OUT OF TOUCH" WLB has been for years.

Great work Tony don't let up the truth will bring them down,it always does in the long run. The Mayor can only hide so long behind her board members.

Tony, I think there is a BIG story here,if three students run for office next fall that would be head lines State wide.I will be more then happy to help, lets start a movement to do it.I am sure that the big money boosters would bank roll the students so money is not the issue. How do we start ...

Well..let me scan my pay stub...uh, no, I may not be able to fund your campaign.

Seriously though...I think it WOULD be a BIG story if students somehow ran for office in WLB. Exactly how you do go about doing that, and requirements such as age and residence, etc....I have no idea.

But..I imagine if you called the WLB clerk's office and asked for the procedure they would probably tell you.

Another problem is..how many MU students would be official residents of WLB and could vote for the student's platform? But just the publicity might be worth it.

As has been stated..MU needs to get the OUTLOOK and WMCX all over this issue and go from there.

The letter which ran today - Thursday - is the one from Mr. F isher which was already carried on the blog via his e-mail and which many have commented on.

So I am not going to republish it again (unless you request it, it is still avalable on the blog anyway)..but feel free to comment on it here if you haven't (or have) already. Please remember..rules of respect apply.

I believe there will be another letter or two in the Press on the MAAC in the coming days and, if so, I will republish it (them) as separates for anyone wishing to offer an opinion.

Tony,

I just commented to you the other day about Mr. Fisher's letter on another blog, but I feel it's repudiates him so well I'm going to repeat some of it here again - especially since he's now getting his chance (via the Press) to gain some traction to his side of the story.

The gist of his complaint is that his street is congested because of MU students who block deliveries, leaf collections, or repairmen. I pointed out to you that his argument against the MAAC is a case of apples & oranges.

WHETHER THE MAAC IS BUILT OR NOT BUILT, MR. FISHER WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE THE PROBLEMS HE ALREADY DOES!
Let me repeat that -- killing the MAAC does NOT fix MR. Fisher's problem.

He lives next to a thriving university (where many of the residents moved to long after the university was in it's growth stages). His problem (and I sympathize with him on it) should addressed. Perhaps MU could step in and stop students from parking there. If not, it must be dealt with via the police department, who should enforce some sort of restricted parking in the area for its residents (if, indeed the situation is as Mr. Fisher makes it out to be). That seems pretty simple to me.

The people who would attend MAAC events, on the other hand, are simply a question of traffic flow. This is an issue which has been addressed over and over again, and found to be a non-problem by experts from BOTH sides. These people would not congest Mr. Fisher's street or any other local street. They would be parking in MU's lot! Most of these people would probably not even drive past Mr. Fisher's house to get to the MAAC! Bottom line, they would not add one iota to his problem of deliveries, leaf collections, or repairmen.

Tony, I hope you have this (or some similar reply) printed in the Press along wth Mr. Fisher's. We have to split fact from fiction on this matter, as well as those with aggendas from those seeking solutions.

I just spoke with our "letters to the editor" dept. and there will be at least one letter supporting my comments and one or two others siding with Mr. Fisher that the Press will also run over the next few days.

All of these "new" letters I will run on the blog as I have mentioned.

As for your particular comment ..if you would (or anyone) like to have your thoughts published in the Press as a "letter to the editor" (on any topic) ..then please see Page A10 of today's Press which describes how to do same.

In a nutshell : you may e-mail your letter to: yourviews@app.com. They must include your name, address, and daytime tel. number for verification, as the Press will call you.

Again...all the nuances are on Page A10 in today's Press.

I especially liked your "fact from fiction" comment.

Tony,

Took your advice and Emailed my comments (I'm the one with the 'fact from fiction' comment) to your editorial folks.

They just called to acknowledge receiving it. Hope they print it. Mr. Fisher and his 'concerns' have to be balanced and picked apart.

Tony, if the residents of WLB allowed mu to build more dorms, then there would be less parking problems and traffic concerns. The university could restrict car use for underclassman(or some other way), and their lots would be of greater use. They own the property to do it. Most Universities dont allow freshman to have cars, I believe mu does. If the school is worried about enrollment, well, they should take a little more pride in their education than worrying about who wants to drive home each weekend.

MU needs to get away from being a suitcase school. This doesnt mean it will bring in more students like the WLB residents believe, this just allows mu to house more students on campus. Perhaps residents dont see it that way, but I sure do. The more students on campus, the less students in their neighborhoods

Tony, How about Mr. Fisher lives at least 3/4 mile from the MAAC site.
