yea but that's nothing like when you used to broadcast the games on WJLK out of Asbury Park.
The best team ever was Tony Graham and Mike Donofrio.
I believe the Monmouth ratings used to go through the roof for those games.
Yes, I believe those ratings even blew away Monmouth Night football!
Seriously Donofrio was probably the best play-by-play guy MU had until EO came along in recent years.
They were both excellent.
In my opinion - and I am not lobbying for the job - MU needs to sound more professional on its radio station than it does most years.
Obviously there have been no hoops broadcasts yet for 2006-2007 and hopefully the new crew will do well. Except for one half a game (Robert Morris) I have not heard any of the football broadcasts as I have attended all the other games.
I understand it is a student station - still it is the ONLY local play-by contact MU has with its fans and - in my opinion - can make the school sound like a legit D1 program or not depending on their broadcasts.
I know for a fact WOBM expressed interest some years back in play-by play MU hoops but MU may have dropped the ball..this is before Gaffney took over and WOBM hasn't made a serious effort since though I have urged them to do so.
With all the local players on the football team, and men's hoops an annual NEC contender and NCAA hopeful, one would hope WOBM or some other local station would attempt to get involved and carry both fooball and basketball.
Make that Monday night football!! well..you get the idea...
And don't forget Ray Lena when he used to broadcast the games on TV-34.
No one quite said "Rocco Santoguida" quite like Ray.
You should be back on the radio Tony Graham.
Are you close to retirement age yet?
Not sure what you mean by "MU needs to sound more professional on its radio station than it does most years." It sounds like a complete insult to the students that are working hard to broadcasting the games. They are working, not getting paid mind you, for the experience and love of the game. They serve their purpose and to openly root for another station to come and broadcast games away from is downright an insult to what they do.
Several of the new things they have done this year (three man booth for football, pre game show in the parking lot, broadcasting soccer games, Saturday Night basketball broadcasts, etc.) have been great.
The main two broadcasters they have now, Rob and Craig do a great job together as a team, and I'm for one looking forward to hearing them work together this year for the men's hoops broadcasts. They should do just fine.
Re: Ray Lena. Where is he now? I did see him a few years back. Ahhh..TV 34. Those were the days.
Am not THAT close to retirement though a few people here probably wish I was!
First of all..no insult was intended or made. I was on a student radio station myself..many moons ago. I know how hard you (students) work and the dedication and passion put into it.
As I could not attend every MU hoops game - for various reasons - as their beat writer for the last 20 years I often listened to and depended on their play-by-play for "real time " information.
As I stated..there were years when the play-by-play,etc. was excellent..sounded professional or close enough to it. There were other years...well..let's say it was a little shaky.
I am not suggesting MU find a "professional" station to broadcast the games with the purpose of diminishing or demeaning the effort of the current WMCX sports staff. But as you are no doubt aware..many, many colleges have their games broadcast "professionally" while also maintaining their student broadcasts (Seton Hall is an excellent example).
.
All that you mention "Several of the new things they have done this year (three man booth for football, pre game show in the parking lot, broadcasting soccer games, Saturday Night basketball broadcasts, etc.)" is good stuff, especially the soccer is a major breakthrough - they certainly deserve it - and hopefully baseball/maybe softball in the spring if a new (first!) pressbox or boxes are constructed.
Seems to me the parking lot broadcasts and Saturday night hoops has been done for some time but that's neither here nor there.
.
I don't know if you do this already on MCX but I would suggest:
Weekly shows with coaches and athletes (not just football and hoops) - as well as .calls ins if possible..and TALK-PHONE in shows maybe 30-60 minutes prior and post every hoops game (and football beginning next year) where fans could CALL in, discuss the games, the teams, etc., win tickets to games, etc. might be popular, especially if you could carry them on the Net ,your (MCX) audience would be world wide.
As MU continues to rise in D1 stature..this is my opinion - the athletics message being sent over the airways via WMCX and or other outlets needs to sound as "professional" as it can.
If you're WMCX you don't want to sound like a student station. You want to sound as professional (that word again), prepared, and as accurate as possible (and please don't blame the refs when calls go against MU!).
But the University should also be looking for a "professional" radio home (one that also is available on the internet). The more voices out there carrying its athletics the better it is for Monmouth University overall.
Finally..best of luck to the MCX hoops broadcasters this season.
A lot of people (at times myself included) will be hanging on your words!
