Shore team falls in Carpenter Cup, 1-0
The pitching was there but the hitting wasn't Monday for the Jersey Shore team in the 2006 Carpenter Cup Tournament.
The Shore team bowed to defending champion Philadelphia Catholic 1-0 at the University of Pennsylvania.
The difference Monday proved to be a fifth inning RBI single by Jonathan Szeliga of Cardinal O'Hara High School.
Anthony Ranaudo of St. Rose walked two to lead off the inning and was replaced by Bobby Bobby Wyrwa of Monmouth Regional who got two outs before yielding Szeglia's hit.
On the play centerfielder Damian Csakai of Freehold Township threw a runner out at the plate to end the inning.
Fve Jersey Shore pitchers Brett Brach (Freehold Township), Ranaudo, Wyrwa, Jordan Warncke (CBA) and Todd Roth (Lacey) held Philadelphia Catholic to four hits.
But the Shore team had only five hits, singles by Dom Hayes (Colts Neck), Ryan Cuneo (Freehold), Evan Bigler (TR South), Jay Cramer (Jackson), and Mike LaCava (TR North).
The game marked the fourth 1-0 contest in Cup history dating back to the early 1980's. The Shore team was a 1-0 victor over Chester County, Pa. in 2005.
Sluggers Keith Weinkofsky ( Ocean) and Tom Heuer (Point Boro) who had prior obligations on this date were not on the team. Could either one have made a difference? Between them they hit 21 home runs (Weinkofsky 11).
