Monmouth upsets North Carolina in men's soccer, 1-0. Honest!
Senior forward Damon Wilson scored on a 12-yard strike in the 55th minute Friday night leading the Monmouth University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over No. 16 North Carolina in the Carolina Nike Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Monmouth senior goalie Daniel Schenkel made seven saves for the Hawks (1-0) who registered a win over the highest ranked program the school has ever defeated.
North Carolina (0-1) outshot Monmouth 16-4, including 9-0 in the first half when Schenkel made four saves.
Wilson, who scored the goal that defeated St. Francis, Pa. 1-0 in the 2006 Northeast Conference Tournament final, converted a pass from from freshman Ryan Kinne, a high school All America from Naugatuck, Conn., the 2006 Connecticut State Player of the Year.
Senior Tom Gray delivered the other three shots in the game for the Hawks. Deric Tyler made one save in the game for UNC.
Monmouth faces No. 3 Wake Forest in its second and final game of the event 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Demon Deacons defeated No. 20 Old Dominion 2-1 Friday at the Nike Carolina Classic.

i wish more people had respect for MU soccer...they are legit...hopefully this will prove something!
What's that phrase? Defense wins championships?
If they can make a game of it vs. Wake Forest maybe they get that national ranking I thought might come their way in preseason.....

This is such an amazing win for MU soccer! These guys are the real deal and as you said, if they can hold their own against Wake Forest we should get a national ranking. Rob has made these kids feel that they belong on the national scene and they are really starting to believe it as they proved it last night. If any of you bloggers have never had the opportunity to watch them play I urge you to come to campus one day and check them out. YOu will not be disapointed.
