"Jet" propelled
Some more comments from MU freshman guard Jhamar "The Jet"" Youngblood who will start at the point Friday night vs. Lehigh with the academic ineligibity of sophomore pg Mike Shipman. These comments did not make it into the Press due to (of course) lack of space..
Jhamar on the importance of the game: "This game is real important. The few last practices have been like great, intense practices on defense and offense. Both sides have been looking better than they were.
""We're looking at this as a game to get us rolling, get us on a streak.''
Jhamar on playing in losing games, more than he did total probably during his varsity career at high school power St. Pat's of Elzabeth: "Nobody likes losing.
""But with the guys we had (in high school) we had lots of talent. We dominated.
""Now it's a different situation, you've got to work harder, you've got to think the game more.
""At St. Pat's we just dominated with talent. We had guys who could jump higher and run faster (than opponents). Now it's a different situation. I've got to be like a leader more for these guys and think the game more than ever.''
My thoughts: Jhamar is the most talented guard in the MU program right now, probably one of the most all around talented guards in the NEC as a freshman. He has genuine point guard instincts. He'll be more of a scoring point guard than Shipman or Tyler Azzarelli.
Having said that it's a tough situation he's bring thrown into and he's bound to make some mistakes during the course of the season but MU will live with that.
Overall, MU will need Marques Alston to begin to "step up" and be more of a post factor than he has, and Bunch to begin to approach the form of last year.
With Shipman out Alex Nunner becomes the No. 3 guard.
The turnover situation is going to critical for the balance of the season. The MU guards, Whitney Coleman and Youngbood, have to be good at taking care of the ball.
I think it would behoove MU, as I've been saying all year, to slow the pace down and run the offense through Bunch and or Marques, and then go from there.
Lehigh is a nice club but, again like LIU and Hartford, a team MU should beat especially at home if it is going to emerge as at least an upper echelon NEC team. So far MU hasn't shown that will be the case.

Dont want to get MU fans overly excited, but LMU's two best players, Brandon Worthy and Matthew Knight will not play in the LMU-MU game on NEw YEars Eve Day....Tonight, we need a big W, then an LMU upset, and roll into two NEC home games, and the attitude and perceptions around here will be changing...
What do you think Tony, can we run off four straight and get back on track if we play well the next few home games and get some momentum?
The injuries are detailed on the LMU web site - http://lmulions.cstv.com/.
However, I hear some of their their reserves are as good if not not better than MU starters...we'll see.
MU is 1-7 vs. the West Coast Conference including the 83-70 loss at LMU to open the 2004-2005 season.
Tomorrow I will run an LMU report including details of tonights game with Akron and will post all the info.
I was answering this and the Net cut out..so..back to square one...
If MU is an upper echelon team in the NEC than it really has to win this game and go from there.
Lehigh is a decent enough club and waffled MU last year but, though it played UND close and led a suspect RU team late this uear, is 3-9 vs. D1s with wins over NEC teams Sac Heart and over Central Conn.
As I see it MU is 3-3 vs.""NEC level" or "next level or so up " opponents - beat Ark State, SPC, and Rider, lost to Penn, LIU (not acceptable at home in my opinion), and Hartford.
MU per college rpi is 224, Lehigh is 270, LMU is 85.
So tonight, I think, will be a very good indicator of where MU is and is going...
To the The Number One Boylan !!@#
I don't know if I can use that on here..I will check with my boss..so I am publishing your comment minus the !@#@e!...here is your comment:
Tony, cmon...The reserves for LMU are not better than the MU starters...Who told you that? I guess we will have to see how tonight's game goes, and go from there, but with Worhty and Knight out, MU HAS A CHANCE to upset LMU, coming cross country playing two games in three days at the Boylan @#@! home court...LETS GO MONMOUTH!
As for the LMU reserves.. heard it from a VERY GOOD source..I didn't say all...I said some...
This one kid for instance
6-5 RS senior Adoyah Miller scored 43 points in two games last week to earn the West Coast Conference Player of the Week on Dec. 26.
The transfer from Miami Dade College and Boston College -
played 10 games and scored just 53 points in his first two injury plagued seasons. However, he has caught fire of late, earning his first two 20-point games of his career last week.
In a win over Boise State in double overtime and a heartbreaking buzzer beater defeat to Long Beach State, Miller averaged 21.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists with two blocks and two steals. In the win over Boise State, he hit 6-of-9 three-pointers to score 23 points, and added six rebounds and eight assists in that win.
Against Long Beach State he went for 20 points, hitting 3-for-7 from long range, adding another six boards. Miller has gone for double digits in nine of the Lions last 10 games, averaging 12.6 points per contest in that span....
sooo..I guess he's pretty darn good.!!..wouldn't you say?
Going into this final week of non-conference play ..NEC remains last in the country according to collegerpi.com at No. 32...Patriot League is No. 15.
Get ready for a MU run.Starting with a 66-60 win tonight,then 13-5 in the NEC.Go Hawks.....
To the Number one Boylan - you know what.
Nope, sorry, we can't use that on the blog, in the Press, etc.
While I admit it is colorful if not creative, you'll have to think of something else for blog or Press publication.
