Mike Shipman needs to "slow down" and play offense the way the MU point guard needs to play. He is rushing things and it is costing the Hawks because he is turning the ball over. I saw this type of erratic play from him last year, however it wasn't a major factor because he was more of a speed-spark off of the bench. Jhamar Youngblood also has been turnover prone along with Whitney Coleman. We need to find someone who can run the offense without turning the ball over. Maybe that Tibbs kid can, maybe Bazaz. Hopefully someone.

Having not seen a game in person yet it's tough to judge, but the turnovers numbers certainly speak for themselves.

Last year Shipman had 61 Assists and 48 turnovers, Coleman was 70 and 74. Azzarelli was the glue, 83 assists, 43 turnovers.

I think it's a little early to give up on Shipman, he has been a PG all his life. Youngblood is a rookie and was not recruited as a PG though he has PG instincts.

Tibbs and Bazaz are walk ons and they're not going to see much time unless the situation is truly out of hand.

Let's see how Shipman does vs. teams more at MU's level, which may not include Texas CC.

In all four games..MU has been in the games late, for whatever that's worth.

After Monday night..we can all get a look in person Saturday when St. Peter's (2-1) visits Boylan Gym. SPC plays FDU Tuesday and S Hall the follwoing week so there will be comparisons to make.

No question that right now the back court is struggling in the ball-handling dept.

Although I don't think Dave will throw a freshman walk on into the fire, I think Tibbs can actually do a more than decent job handeling the offense. I went to the blue/white scrimmage and was quite surprised at how well he was doing point guard wise. I would throw him in maybe for 2 or 3 minutes to send the rest of the team a message. Oh yea i second local product Bazaz getting huge minutes the next game.

FDU over S Hall Saturday. Any thoughts from anyone? I have to say I was shocked!

Wasn't at the game but from pass experience I know that the PG gets credited with the turnover even if its not totally his fault. The rest of the team has to be ready to actually catch the pass and be at the spot they are suppose to be in. I'm still a big Ship fan. The kid can play flat out always has and always will.

the person who just suggested tibbs and bazaz should never ever ever watch or comment on basketball ever again if they were serious...thank you

TJ Tibbs is a walk-on and for good reason...end of discussion...

Four games in and people are already whining. If I recall correctly MU was at the same point last year with Azzarelli(who was then out with injury) & we still went to the NCAA. Let the team get a chance to jell before you start asking for a new back court. Ship & Whit can handle it.

Yes, I think that was overloading the panic button somewhat.

I doubt if they win Monday night....But I said prior to the season I believed they would win 4-6 non-conference games - and I'm sticking to it!!

I project they beat St. Peter's, Hartford, and Lehigh at home...that's at least four right there (with Ark State)... they may steal one or two more..not impossible...

I think less than four non-conference wins would be disappointing, not just to fans, but to Calloway and the staff..

Tony, youre my man and all, but I have a few issues with you...ok, why are u writing off the hawks for tomorrow night's game? I know Texas AM CC has good talent, but MU just played Clemson and Houston down to the wire, two very good teams....Number two, Rider is pathetic...the hawks will beat them...then you are correct, hartford, st. peters, and lehigh are wins...The other three will be tough, but Seton Hall and Penn are both winnable, as is a tough Loyola Marymount team ,who has to fly out cross country...all the whiners, go watch the NFL and complain, bc the hawks will be money at NEC conference and tourney time....

From the MU point of view I don't like this matchup...this from the Tex CC web site

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi center Chris Daniels (a seven-footer) was named the Southland Conference Preseason Player of the Year according the Sporting News College Basketball Preview.

Daniels, a senior from San Antonio, returns for his third season and is the team’s leading scorer and rebounder from last year’s team that went 20-8. The 7-0 center was named to the All-Southland Conference Preseason second-team list and was the only Islander to receive preseason honors.

A year ago, Daniels averaged 15 points and pulled down 7.3 rebounds a game and led the team with 42 blocked shots.

This team is supposed to be very athletic and will probably press.
Daniels prob negates MU advantage it might have with Bunch. One of their coaches told a recruiting guy I know a few weeks ago that they would beat MU by 25 points..

MU has to sloooowwwww it down against teams like this and it goes without saying hold its turnovers to a heck of a lot lower than 27.

Hey, maybe MU has a shot. I just don't see it as a win.

Rider schedule

Regular Season
Date Opp. Result Record
Nov 14 @NJ Tech Lost 52-63 0-1
Nov 18 @Boston U. Won 66-60 1-1
Nov 21 @Delaware
Nov 25 Northeastern
Nov 27 Drexel
Nov 30 Monmouth

Yes, this should be a winnable game for MU, but I would hardly call Rider "pathetic."" I don't think NJIT is all that bad and BU is usually pretty good.

Rider has two very good players..in Mouton, a guard who lit it up in the JSBL, and Thompson, a sky-walking forward. This is a game, though, MU can win.

BUT usually it just doesn't play well at Rider, or Rider shoots the light out vs. MU at home.

MU hasn't won there since 1996 (playing there mostly every other year since the late 90's).

I guess you could say MU is due to win in the "Broncs Zoo."

Is anyone else a little upset with the fact that MU cant seem to quite get over that hump to become a solid mid-major team? I mean we all know MU has been dominant in the NEC, and had good wins and won a lot of non-conference games they should have won over the past few years, but I still feel a bit disappointed...I mean as a hopeful and passionate MU fan, I envision this program eventually becoming like a george mason type or a penn, or typical princeton...Right now, the hawks are not there...we simply can not continue to have 4-8 non conference records...this has to be taken up to at least 6-6, and at this point that is attainable this year, but will be tough...Maybe I am rambling and not making complete sense, but as a die hard MU fan, I am almost sad right now..To get national recognition, we cant keep almost winning, or playing teams like clemson and odu, and houston tough, we have to win one or take it right down to the end, and we have to stop losing to teams we should beat, as rider or st peters or freakin lehigh last year...again, I just want the best for this program, i really do...feel free to rip me for my comments...

I guess if I was a coach on a team (A&M CC) that got all JUCO rejects who clealry have talent to play at a higher level, but a coach who could care less about character, I would say that my team was going to beat Monmouth by 25!

And tony, Mouton is a very nice player, but the JSBL is no indication of one's talent level and can not be compared to NCAA Division 1 hoops, cmon....

I, for one, am certainly not going to rip you. To quote or paraphrase Calloway from the Press story the other day, "We have to start winning more of these games (non-conference) than we lose.''

That's one of the reasons MU doesn't schedule many (any?) cup cakes for itself.

I think when Monmouth finally (ever?) builds the MAAC it will further help recruiting.

To me..this year (maybe my standards aren't as high as yours) 4-8 would be acceptable..the bare acceptable, but acceptable.

Ideally they at last go 5-7 or 6-6.

True, about the JSBL. It's a different game compared to organized college ball, but it gives you an idea about a player's natural ability. This kid can play. I'm not saying he's Deon Hames but he can play

All due respect fellas, but this is too the "Youngblood" hater. The young man is a freshman "1". And if anything he should be making more turnovers than "Ship" and "Whit" combined "2". Yet he is short of both of them on TO's, running neck and neck with them in mins, and not to far from them in points. So for him, he is doing pretty well and it does not say much for them.

I really didn't spot your "Youngblood hater.""

Barring turnover calamaties, I can't see Dave putting him in over Whitney or Shipman, at least for the forseeable future.

By the way, from what I can tell, he's a great kid, very coachable, and a hard worker.

For the Youngblood lover...your post doesnt make any sense at all..no one is bashing Jhamar here...he's a good player with very good upside, and like the rest of the guards, he has to take care of the ball, as that is a theme in the first four games...Mike and Whitney both proved themsleves through a 30 some odd game season last year, so I think they should have the benefit of the doubt, but thats not to say that he wont go past one or both of them at some point in the next year or so..Let's remember that they are all teammates, and we are fans...Also, the coaches seem to know what theyre doing, as evident by the 6 straight winning seasons....Tony I think we need some kind of new Hawks polls or question, maybe a past Q to get the negativity away from now and celebrate some of the past hawk happiness...Amen?

Well...what happens is..when a team is losing..and right now MU is losing....fans tend to be a tad negative..

Imagine if we had a blog at this time last year!

Ever listen to the FAN after a Mets loss.?..or WIP after a Phillies loss.?..or better yet..tomorrow after today's Eagles ultra debacle? That should be be fun.

Okay...here's a question I think will spark some debate:

Who was the MVP on last year's men's NEC championship team? You may only pick one player....

Heck..I'm having trouble answering this one..

Tyler?
Chris?
Marques?
Bunch?
Deki?

Bazaz?

Tony, how do we get this program to that next level? How does MU start winning 5-6 non conference games or more every year? Do you think they schedule too tough? I mean they always play 2-3 very tough teams, then 2-3 in that solid solid mid major level, then maybe 2-3 that could go either way, and then 1-2 that they should win. I dont know the answer, but I wish I did.
