Recruiting review

I have been meaning to research this for some time now.

There was some earlier discussion as to how MU wound up with no contributing juniors to this year's team....so I finally was able to dig some media guides out of the rubble that passes for my desk at work..and..in looking at the 2003-2004 media guide..kids that could be seniors or red-shirt juniors now we find as newcomers:

Brian Boxler, Marques Alston, Dejan Delic, Corey Hallett, Brett Fragel, and Brent Stephens...the latter two left on their own but Fragel not until a year later. Boxler was a one-year player but worth it. I think the other three speak for themselves. Those who, theoretically, could still be here. Fragel, a very, very raw 6-10 kid, and Stephens.

Newcomers for 2004-2005 then were: Fragel (a recruited walk on), John Ager, John Bunch (who had to sit out that year); Brent Wilson, and that was it. Ager failed out. Fragel left that year without playing. Wilson was a reserve for two years. That leaves Ager (MU doesn't need another guard) and Fragel who wasn't as good as Dobriansky or Gaitley are now.

I forget what year Drexel transfer Jamil Moore came and went. And there was that other big kid, 6-8 transfer from Drexel (I forget his name), who was dismissed from MU before he ever played. Don't beleive he or Moore would still be here now anyway.

Bottom line...some very good players and or contributors were recruited. Some others didn't pan out. That's college basketball.

Tony,

All very interesting names from tha past. And good points as to where we might have been had some of these guys panned out -- but most didn't. That must be improved on to move forward. I'm sure this goes on at other schools too, but I'm only concerned about MU.

Bottom line -- we've got to find a way to start winning non-conference games to the point where significant wins only occur once every 3 years or so. We've got to reach the point where you're not having to write stories in the Press taking us back to the big Pepperdine win, or the big So. Illinois win -- they've got to be more frequent!

PS -- saw your note about MU holding autism awareness day Saturday. Great idea! Maybe those jerks protesting the new field house should take notice of the good things done here!

Jamil Moore entered MU in the Fall 2002 (left Drexel program after third game in 2001-2002 season as a Sophomore). He sat out 2002-2003 and was dismissed during the summer 2003.

Pat Deveney, the other Drexel transfer, left Drexel after Fall 2001 (as a Sophomore but never played in the season), and entered MU for the Spring 2002. He was sitting out the rest of the 2001-2002 season when he was dismissed before the end of that season.

Both players would have been done after the 2004-2005 year. So neither would have had a direct impact this year. It would be intersting to determine who ultimately ended up with their scholarships, as those players would not be with us if these players were not dismissed for their respective reasons.

Would have been interesting who would have received the scholarships they scoffed up.

What made it all so fruitless was that they remained at Monmouth their sit out years, and then were dismissed before the years in which they would have played..

I think Deveney, a physical presence with skill, would have made a significant difference that year that Wagner won the NEC. Deveney would have been MU's Sean Munson and Munson pushed Wagner over the top.

But the kid messed it up for MU, and mainly himself.

Why not redshirt Ricky ???? let him work on his grades and learn the MU system,in the long run it the right thing for him and the porgram,a few dunks and rebounds here and there are not woth it,think of the kid , let him sit and get ready for next year.

Re: Rickie. Not a bad idea. If they just had one more experienced forward coming off the bench it would be even more practical. Maybe Barlow (minus the experience) can become that player? Just tossing that out there.

I beleive Dave was pondering that (redshirting Rickie) at one point this summer or fall, then figured Rickie could make an impact this season. If it becomes obvious that will not be the case that may be the way to go.

On the other hand..I know Rickie loves basketball and if he doesn't play this year, maybe he struggles even more so in the classroom. Sort of a Catch-22.

Eventually the player - any player - has to buckle down and put in the effort.

I have to check on the redshirt rule in hoops. I know in football if you play one second of one year it counts against you (barring injury).

It's definitely not too late for Rickie to help them on the floor this year..not yet.

Tony Please tell Dave to Redshirt Rickey,he wont help the team this year at all, reduce the stress and have him work on his school work, life is a long road, this is an easy one,for him and the coaches do the right thing.

You're giving me a little tooooo much credit here. Though I am free with suggestions Dave does not exactly hang on my every word.

He is going to do whatever he's going to do which has seemed to work out.

I beleive, at the moment, the plans are to still try and get Rickie into action this season.

I will check with Dave on this again Monday. I also don't don't know if Rickie would want to red shirt or how much this would benefit him.
