Fantastic finishes

By the way..I have added my comment to the "How to get MU to the next level" blog..

Now, to this topic. The women's game Monday night brought back for me some MU (men) thrilling and agonizing finishes, especially in recent years. What ones did you actually attend (good and or bad, or maybe were listening to ) and did you leave early (or shut the radio off) thinking the game was won or lost?

Was anyone at the women's game Monday?

Again...I have never seen an ending like the one Monday night, women, men, high school, you name it.

While it doesn't compare in terms of the magnitude of the win like Marist & Rider in 96 and last year, the one I remember the most is the buzzer-beater put back by Blackwell out at Pepperdine. Between that and Calloway's record 9 threes against future NBA star Doug Christie (he was popping them like gum drops), it was one of those games that helped set the foundation for what the current program is today.

1. Kenny's Layup At FDU.
2. Marques' Layup to beat CCSU at home in NEC 1st round.
3. Mike Shipman's Miracle at Monmouth halfcourt shot to beat St Francis PA.
4. Marques' jumper to beat St Peter's at home.

This came in via e-mail....

Good Morning Tony,

First off I'm really enjoying the blog. I'm a '97 Grad living in the Philly area and the blog has been a great way for me to keep up with Daily Monmouth sports. Lord knows there is not a lot to cheer for down in Philly these days.

Also I'm the Old Sports Director at WMCX and have been witness to some unbelieveable finishes. In no particular order here are a couple of games that were near and dear to my heart:

1. '97 Semifinal at FDU. Down by 20 early in the 2nd half. Monmouth rallies. Quincy Lee nearly wins the game in regulation with an 80 foot heeve that hits the back iron. Game ends up going to Double OT. FDU looked to ice the game at the foul line but I believe it was Rashaan Turner who missed 2 from the line. Corey Albano gets fouled on the rebound...sinks 2 foul shots...we win...only to lose a heartbreaker at LIU in the Final.

2. '96 Semifinal at Marist. Down by five under a minute left. John Giraldo hits a 3 from about 40 feet to give us life. After we foul Marist hits 1 of 2 from the line...Monmouth finds Mustafa Barksdale in the corner...launches a 3...good...and a foul. What once was a rocking gym was stunned. Which leads us to...

3. '96 Final vs Rider...Was Quincy Lee fouled. I say yes. We go on to face Marquette.

4. '00 Final vs SFNY (may have to check if I got the year right on that one) Game was played in Trenton. Just another "ho hum" 20 point comeback in the second half. Sends Calloway to his first NCAA tourney as Head Coach.

Just a couple of my nominations. Thanks Tony and keep up the good work.

Hey Tony

Its Tim Walker former manager of the hawks from 96-99. Just to correct Bill Webb and if memory severs me correct it was Slider that missed the foul shot. I did forget about the 80ft heave by Lee. Any way. The first has to be the Marist Game. Down 5 50 seconds to go. Second would be the rider game and third to be the FDU game. THere was something in the air when we were there for the 10th anniversary last year. Shipmans half court shot. That was great. Thanks for the blog Tony and look forward to more.

Hi Tim! Good to hear from MU alums.

It seems MU has been winning most of the barn burners over recent years...

As I recall in those 96-97 NEC games MU trailed at half in every game...Wagner, Marist, Rider (96), and then in 97..Pa., FDU, and LIU before losing the LIU game..

Yes, how ironic last year.. with Mustapha in the house, Shipman wins it on a miracle shot...

Well, the only great game I was at that had a fantastic finish was the Kenny drive in the 2006 NEC Championship game. I watched the 2001 NEC champ game on TV (MU rallies from 20 pts. down against SFNY). I listened to the Shipman halfcourt shot on the radio. Watched the Alston drive against CCSU in the 2005 NEC tourney. The worst one I listened too was the Princeton 90 ft miracle at the buzzer. Funny story is I had forgotten MU was playing that night. I turned on the game as the Princeton player let the shot go. I was stunned when I heard it was a 90 ft shot (I know it made ESPN that night).

The Princeton game..the crowd gasped when it went in. Kevin Owens had this glazed look in his eyes (sort of his normal look actually - just kidding Kevin!) The MU team walked very slowly to the door to go downstairs to the locker room with an air of "did that really happen?"

Right until the end last year in the NEC final...I didn't think MU would win. Then Kenny begins his drive and out of the corner of my eye I see ""There's no one between him and the basket!"

I wonder what Tom Green was thinking.

Actually in the last few years FDU has cornered the market on bizarre losses in the NECs. Remeber a few years back (2004) Justin Chiera of CCSU hit the game-tying 3 at the buzzer in the NEC semis and CCSU beat FDU in overtime. Then MU easily beat CCSU in the final as CCSU left the back door open all night. I have often thought that had FDU won over CCSU they had a good shot at beating MU in the final even though it was at Boylan where MU went 13-0 that year.

MU got a break there and made the most of it.
