Comment on Penn game here

Whether you go, listen, or just want to talk about it, this would be the place. I was unable to attend myself, but I will be doing a Press story for Wednesday and talking to Dave after the game.

WMCX radio is an absolute disgrace..its something else every game...the announcers are awful...we need much better, this is not fair to loyal MU fans

I agree, Im aure the kids are nice guys, but honestly focus on the play-by-play. It's not fun hearing what happened by the crowds reaction then being told 10 seconds later than you should. These kids get off on more tangents than the I-man (Imus). Cmon, fellas let us here whats going on, and yes can WMCX stop having technical issues every game.

HalfTime-
Penn 43 (yes 43)
MU 35

I guess maybe I shouldnt be so upset with the margin just eight points, but from the sound of it, Penn is scoring on every single posession, no seriosuly everrry posession. What's the deal. Penn is also getting every loose ball and rebound, get tough. Corey seems like a nice kids, but honestly get tough and grab some rebounds and how about scoring every once in a while. FRUSTRATION!

Play-by-play is passable more or less.
Hey, it's college radio.

But at halftime I'd like to hear the stats and an interview. Where's Thomas Dick when you need him?
I have suggested to them that, at least for home games, they get in touch with Blake Hamilton who is around, and have him in for halftime or even on during games.
As long as the MU administration can live with MCX as their "voice" of the school's "flag ship sport" (as I quote Marilyn McNeil here), this is what they're going to get.
Again, I have no problem with college radio. But that's what this is, college radio.
Every now and then you get an Eddie O, but not often enough.

Yes...43 points allowed won't get it done for MU.

They definitely miss Bunch. There's no size or scoring off the bench.

They (announcers) never game halftime stats...not acceptable even for college students.

Okay I have given him the benefit of the doubt for far too long...Corey Hallet cant play..He doesnt do anyyyything...He doesnt score he doesnt rebound he doesnt knock anyoen around...A desperate man says desperate things, but Id rather see Shawn Barlow out there. He would at least grab a rebound or two and probably make a shot on accident.

Turnovers, always at the worst times (there are never good times) .
Good job here by the radio guys, talking about the turnover problems.
Interesting that Delic was taken out and Corey left in ..

Delic back in now..Hallett out.

One reason for turnovers though is virtually ..no post game.

Rider's 6-10 Jason Thompson going to be unstoppable Thursday night unless Bunch returns, or a few MU players grow real quick.

Radio guys..too many wise cracks in my opinion, your team is down 15!

Radio guys are doing a good job with time and score, but still too many wise cracks..yikes..another one!.

I'm glad they're in a good mood. Are MU fans laughing?

Holy cow! I was thinking the same thign about Hallet. How many chances does a kid get? Id rather lose with a smaller team with heart out there. It's amazing, he just doesnt bring anything to the table. He needs to be benched by the coaching staff.

Good point by announcers here on Bunch. Nice job.

8:25 PM, November 28, 2006

Also they make a decent point on Barlow...but Dave wasn't going to put him in when the game was still, maybe, possibly, within reach.

Maybe he gets in near the end.

Tony, honestly what can be done about Hallet? He kills the team when he is on the floor. Can they go without him?

8:42 PM, November 28, 2006
Blogger Tony Graham said...

No..he's a 6-10 fifth year senior. They have to hope he comes around. He has shown flashes in the past. and without Bunch he's gotta be out there.

I think this is going to be a long long year. Maybe not a 10-22 type year, but more like a 15-15 year that makes us all moan and groan. This is not going to be a typical MU championship or right in the hunt kind of year. Well not if this kind of play is any indication. I mean 80 points on Monmouth is like a team scoring 105 against an up-tempo man-to-man team. Coach Krayl has to be beside himself.

If WMCX is a "disgrace" then someone should talk to the president, as I understand it, it is him who wants to keep the learning experience of WMCX as the ONLY provider of Monmouth basketball. Also that would require many of those loyal MU fans should give to the Blue/White so that MU can afford to pay a local station to put the games on.

can we get a box score on the game? i was out xmas shopping and missed the call on the x.

I don't know if that's true (about the president) but I will ask him about generally their thoughts on trying to find some regular local radio in the future.

Both MU and Penn web sites have game stories up. Nice job there by "CT."

Penn also has a box score on its site and MU may have one as well by now.

And you didn't go? That may have violated your contract!

Corey Hallett:
I for one am a fan and a supporter of Corey Hallett. Anyone who has ever watched a Monmouth game can appreciate the fact that this kid works hard and brings energy and leadership to the floor every game for the Hawks. That being said, Corey does have some flaws in his game. 1. He is limited in the post, because of a lack of footwork and upper body strength.
2. Corey does not block enough shots for a man as athletic and tall as himself.
3. Corey really does not hit his perimiter jumper enough, especially since it looks very good in warmups and at times during games.
Corey just like any center that Monmouth is going to recruit is a flawed player. But, Corey has been a winner during his tenure at Monmouth. The kid works hard and expects focus from his teammates (I have seen him call out players on the bench for not focusing and he is hard on himself especially when he does not execute). Corey loves the game, works hard even playing in the JSBL over the summer rather than going home to Canada; and has the right attitude most of the time when it comes to a team concept. One of the major problems are his statistics do not show his effectiveness. Corey does a nice job stepping out and challenging shooters in the matchup zone and fights for loose balls, etc. But Corey does not ever get a long stretch on the court or many minutes in a game. I have not seen today's box score, but usually he gets 18-21 min's a game with Bunch or a small lineup receiving more minutes over his time here at MU. I for one would be happy to have a hard-working, energetic 6'10 Center who is a winner on the MU roster for the next few decades.
"He's not a pro, and Monmouth isn't Duke".

Insightful comments (as usual) by MU mystery coach.

There were times last year Corey played well. They need him.

Of course, they need Bunch too. Be interesting to see if Rickie Crews is making the trip to Rider.

Eventually he could give MU another option up front if things work out for him.

But remember..he's also a freshman.

Calloway said he might have played at Penn with Bunch being out.

Cmon we all know he's a hard worker, but to play you have to produce....3 points and 5 rebounds, along with 0 blocks, 0 assists and 3 turnovers (and this was a better stat line than his last game)...Thats unacceptable..He has to do something out there mix it up a little bit...Penn had one guy on the court 6'8'' The rest of the team were scrappers.

Okay lets take a vote....Who here thinks WMCX does a good job broadcasting mens hoops games? I for one can never figure out whats happening, who's on the court, and what sport is actually being played. What I do learn are obscure tangents that I do not want to know.

Re: WMCX. Remember again, these are college kids. They are not really supposed to sound like WFAN

Also...it's not THAT easy for MU to go out and snare a commercial station, though a strong effort needs to be made, if it hasn't been already.
Remember.. commercial radio wants to make money. That's what it's all about.

Also..I know from talking to WOBM (1160AM) about they're doing MU athletics they, and anyone, would be concerned about WMCX. Why? Because MCX is on the internet and OBM's over the air signal is insignificant by comparison.

Soooo..they and anyone else would need to broadcast the games on the net to give a potential vast audience a choice.

I don't have all (any) particulars on what that woul entail but I have to believe it could be worked out.

Heck, the Chevy Giant Football show on OBM and WADB (1310) is on the net.

WMCX is the biggest disgrace on the radio I have ever herd. President and the AD should listen to the game and then take action. They want to build a $35,000,000 MAC and they cant put out a play by play that we the fans can listen to and be proud. Tony let the power to be now how much WMCX is killing any fan support we might have this year.

11:04 PM, November 28, 2006

I think you just did.

BUT, for now, I'm not putting on any more WMCX rips on here. I think the message has been sent.

Also..WMCX is not killing fan support....please let's not over react.

MU hoops has more concerns now than their radio station.

Wow I started this comment about WMCX not with that strong of sentiments, but hey I know the kids are college kids and learning, but if they could just stick to the play-by-play and try to keep us informed with what is going on that would be fine, but usually I am left guessing about what is happening.

2.WMCX broadcaters' shortcomings

Just returned from Penn ,we are in big trouble this year,no leadership by anyone. The coaches just YELL and YELL and no one knows what to do on the court right now.T/O 18+ no rebounding -10 or 12, 80 pts no D at all and what is an assit, ask the Penn coach! Rider will blow MU out by 20+ points,we have no heart at all,not one player played to win. What happened to over number one team ,my new pick is 7th at best in the NEC and one more win in non con play.Good night i wish this was a bad dream.

OK...last comment is valid..but that's it for WMCX for a while.

Those of you who are MU students..why not ask to speak with the AD, the president, etc. if you feel this strongly.

Is there a professor who heads up the whole broadcast dept? Speak with him.

And why not meet with the MCX announcers? They are your fellow students you know.

To all WMCX listeners and Tony Graham bloggers:

After reading your comments and critisicm of tonight's broadcast I would like to point out the following...

1. As the lead play-by-play announcer for basketball, I am a HUGE believer in the entertainment value to a game. As a listener, I get board very easily listening to just the X's and O's of a game. Therefore, If I have to leave out a player substitution or stats to give a wise crack/joke/observation as a broadcaster, I won't hesitate to do it. I'm not an X's and O's person, I apoligize for that, but that's not my style, and after spending years developing that style on high school tv/radio and previous years on wmcx, I'm not going to change it now. Joe Buck has a love it or hate it style similar to mine on FOX (a lot of people hate him for it), but your stuck with him for MLB and NFL, and at least as far as this year at WMCX with men's basketball, you're pretty much stuck with us.

2. For tonight's broadcast in particular the quality suffered because of a) technical difficulties, b) we didn't get updated stats (we can only report what we have) c) we had a bad broadcast postiton from high above the arena.

3. In the future, should anyone have any questions or comments regarding my staff's sports broadcasts, please contact me directly instead of raiding Tony's blog where me and my staff can't get a chance to exlain/defend ourselves. We are trying our best for you the listener to make this a very entertaining college basketball season. We thank you for listening, and look forward to a great season.

Craig...am glad you took the opportunity here to speak your mind.

It wasn't fair that you had no forum to defend yourselves and you have every right to do just that...which you just did.

I am sure no one was aware of some of the problems you faced tonight.

In the end, it's your (Monmouth's) radio station.

How you represent your school is up to you.

Was not at the game but I take acception to the the comment that the team plays with no heart. Everyone who steps out on that floor plays to win. Unfortunately you can't win them all. MU will be ok and when they return to the NCAA I will pull up these posts so that all you doomsayers can be recognized for the basketball guru's you are. GO MU!!!!

Craig, I was one who was on a tirade last night and I apologize. I just like to know what is happening and its not a personal atatck on you. I think the technical issues are the most frustrating as a listener and I know thats beynd your control. We appreciate you guys and what you do, and it was also alot of frustartion with how the games have been going. Sorry for the rash comments, keep up the hard work and thanks.

As a former WMCX sports director (1995-95), current adjunct faculty member & sports radio voice for WOBM/WADB & bloomberg radio i can appreciate Craig's posting .. i can also appreciate the listeners frustration with techinal issues but one must keep in mind that when the team travels to an away gym we are at the mercy of the away team and their media people for things like stats, a good broadcast location or even a workable phone line .. we have always taken great pride in the line of sportscasters here at WMCX and will continue to try and get better each game .. Thank you for your comments, and as someone a little upset with the technical issues the other night I apologize for my rash comments and understand the difficulty, and Im thankful I can hear games I otherwise would be unable to hear/see. On the style I understand Craig, thank you for clarifying and please dont take it personal, I think you offer some great insight and sound like you enjoy what you do. Thank you WMCX, we all get selfish sometimes.

A loyal Hawk fan
