Rutgers’ Frazier Enjoying Hot Start With Team USA Baseball

PISCATAWAY, NJ (June 26, 2006) – Rutgers University rising junior shortstop Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) has enjoyed a hot start during the USA Baseball National Team Trials.

The Scarlet Knight All-BIG-EAST performer hit a bases-clearing triple in the first inning against the Pittsfield Dukes of the New England Collegiate Baseball League to give Team USA a 3-0 lead in its first game against outside competition on Sunday, in Pittsfield, MA. Team USA took a 6-0 lead into the top of the fourth before the contest was halted due to rain. Frazier played left field and batted seventh in the contest for Team USA. The teams played through a consistent rain before being called off. Because it did not go a minimum of five innings, it is not listed as an official game.

Team USA starting pitcher David Price of Vanderbilt University no-hit the Dukes for three innings and struck out four with two walks.

Earlier on Sunday, Team USA played its first Red-Blue intrasquad game of the Trials. Frazier and University of Tennessee’s Julio Borbon led all hitters with three hits for the Blue Team, who lost 4-3 to the Red Team in the game. Frazier played both shortstop and third base and batted fifth in the Blue Team’s lineup in the contest.

Frazier is one of 36 standout collegiate players from around the nation to accept an invitation to play in USA Baseball’s National Team Trials. The Trials run through July 1 with exhibition games against teams from the New England Collegiate League. The USA Baseball National Team will select from the pool of 36 players, where the official 22-man roster will be unveiled July 2.

Team USA continues its Trials schedule on Tuesday in Keene, NH, with another Red-Blue game at 1:00 p.m., followed by a contest against the Keene Swampbats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League at 7:00 p.m.
